Happy Thursday to me!!!! I love that Simon is getting into True Crime and Mystery. He should just narrare everything, including news and my daily life
Yesssss
Sorry man but the first 3 channels were warrented. Now it's just recycling other people content. This gets a hard pass from me. It's very obvious he's in it for the money.
For me it's equal parts joy and exasperation. I so happy I've found another Simon channel... but I'm also slightly exasperated that I have yet another channel to follow.
Because Simon thought:
"What am I missing in my life....
Occasional sunlight? No,
Spending some time with his kids? No,
Spending quality time with the wife? No,
Letting Danny out the basement? No! Of course not!
Oh I know, another youtube channel!!!!!"
And it's an absolute win for us! It always makes my day when I see a new Fact Boy channel! I don't believe in Gods, but if RUclips had one it would be Simon.
Because the Gentleman's got his priorities straight and thank you for that..👍😂
I'm wondering how many channels Simon is away from total control of RUclips ... and then renaming it BeardTube....
May danny forever remain in simons basement
Maybe he does 👀 and he films a months worth of content in a single day
Katy is a very good writer and gives off some of the similar vibes of added humor that Callum and Danny provide. Definitely gonna love this channel as much as B.B And the casual criminalist!

Yes I'm definitely enjoying her writing style. Does remind me a bit of Danny and Callum somehow having a lovechild who also writes for Simon, though her own personality definitely shines through enough that it's totally original

As a Bermudian I'd love to hear Simon do something on the triangle, just out of curiosity of what tangents he'd head off on. For clarification, little actually happened near Bermuda, we were just more interesting than Florida when someone got around to giving the area it's name, and there is nothing paranormal involved.
I feel .like disasters in the Florida Triangle would have more lawn furniture, missing fingers, and meth.
I am sure that Florida Man must be involved in there somewheres.

Actually Simon, for people who do come down with methanol poisoning, they can treat them by giving them ethanol intravenously because that keeps the liver busy and allows the methanol to be passed out as the non toxic methanol instead of the body dealing with the highly toxic breakdown products. So yer, if you get a dose of methanol as a heavy drinker and keep drinking, just saying, it might not poison you, compared to a more moderate drinker, who's fully functional liver is going to turn that methanol into some serious deadly stuff.
Happy to hear a story about The Mary Celeste! She was known as The Amazon only an hour away from my home here in Nova Scotia! AKA 'Bum Fack No Where!!' back in her day !! Thank You Simon for the laughs and Katy for the history!

I am from Nova Scotia. I was told this story at a daycare when I was four or five. It was a day where it was pouring rain, and we would go to the shed and be told ghost stories with rain bouncing off of the roof. I still remember the details clearly. It. Was. Horrifying. Lol
I misheard Simon saying that "There are legal pirates" "They're called Financiers". Still accurate.
I learnt about the the "Marie Celeste" in the 1970's at school. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a novelist which means he takes the idea of real boat, the Mary Celeste, and weaves in and embellisheshes the real facts, making them into a novella or short story. The type of thing for which he is famous, as Simon said, look no further than Sherlock Holmes.
Simon- "In case you didn't know, I have many other channels"
That one guy who has never been on RUclips-
"Oh, I'll have to go see what those are"

My old boss was huge on the rotating gravitational flux lines surrounding the earth. He had all these books showing points like coral castle and the pyramids. It said that pieces of ships lost in the Bermuda triangle were found floating up in space. The theory was that certain spots on the planet where the flux lines came together would cancel out gravity and objects would be weightless and start lifting up into the sky. I never thought about it again until watching this episode. Maybe my old boss finally finished the gravity mirror that he was trying to figure out after all these years. His plan was to tip it a bit and make a propeller that would spin for free. Also, I haven't heard anything about his floating couch for sale yet. Ha. Thanks for the great vids.
I mean a floating couch is significantly less valuable as a market than owning a spot where you can launch into orbit for zero fuel.
Is there an equivalent of London's super basement in Czechia? It must be getting crowded in Simon's basement with Danny, Sam, Callum, Jenn, and now Katy in there 😆
Nah, it's a prince of Persia type of basement 😉 plenty of room for more

Apparently, the cargo contained a sizeable amount of extremely flammable liquid. Someone saw blue fumes through a hatchway and the people abandoned ship before the expected explosion's. The boat sailed away unmanned and the people died. Makes sense to me.
Yeah sure or a hundred other things. We'll never know. Mary Celeste is a myth in that regard. No one will ever know. The evidence for the alcohol explosion is the lack of evidence... so same as god.
Oh HELL yeah another upload!

If you decide to do another Blaze Boy Plays, "The Return of the Obra Dinn" is an excellent mystery game involving a ghost ship. It's a 10-15 hour experience, I'd recommend not looking at stream comments because of the potential for spoilers.
Simon "even pirates cant drink poison"
Me: unless you're the Dread Pirate Roberts!
Who else LOVES Simons tangents?!?? I'm hearing about the Spanish setting a bull on someone in the midst of the Mary Celeste tale! Lol. Brilliant!
A good few cargos were / are well known being explosive if they give off fumes. Hell, even flour dust can cause catastrophic explosions.
It's not entirely unknown for an entire ship's compliment to get out fast and sit in the life boat for a bit while waiting for said fumes to dissipate.
If some moron let go of the rope as the crew in the lifeboat put distance between themselves and their potentially explosive ship...
...the crew gets to see their ship sail away, followed some horrible time later by their collective death from dehydration / exposure. Nasty, not weird.
Oceans are really big, empty ships can float about for years. But a lifeboat full of bodies is going to founder while becoming a smorgasbord for any hungry passer by.
Um, watching an episode might be considered stupid, but I'm interested to see if our conclusions agree / disagree.
Wouldn't they have tied the two ships together in that case? Not just hang on to the rope and don't let go.
I know this thread is aged but thought you might like to know tha Americans commonly use Propoan-2-ol ( iso- propyl alcohol) in the way we poms and Aussies use " metho" ( methylated spirit= ethanol+ methel Ethel Ketone) .so I guess that is what they meant by " american" denatured alcohol.
Would a fire with this alcohol not burn clear and at low temperature as well, which would have confused the crew maybe?
You can see this with the old F1/Indy/NAS pit stop fires

Simon, you should absolutely do an episode on the Bermuda Triangle, on at least one of your channels, I will absolutely watch that
Definition of a Brigantine (pronounced 'Brig-an-teen) with explanations of the terminology is as follows: two-masted vessel (self explanatory), the mainmast (tallest mast) is aft of (behind) the mizzenmast (smaller mast) and carries at least two sails - This mast arrangement (mainmast abaft the mizzenmast) is the same as a Schooner but a Schooner is generally not square rigged whereas a Brigantine is (there is an exception, this is clarified below). The term 'square rigged' means that there are rectangular sails hung from horizontal yard arms from the mast and these are normally oriented at 90 degrees (square or thereabouts) to the keel. These are the sails that everyone imagines when they think of a traditional 'pirate ship' or a Viking long ship. Square sails are purely for sailing downwind, unlike sails mounted fore-aft as on a modern sailing yacht, they cannot be used to beat to windward (sail upwind) as fore-aft sails can. Square rigged trading ships tended to follow the seasonal trade winds so most of their sailing was downwind, making square rigs a sensible choice. What makes a Brigantine a Brigantine is that the mainmast (aft mast) carries at least one square rigged topsail and a gaff sail mainsail. The term 'gaff sail' means that instead of a triangular sail with a point at the head and a boom hinged from the mast at the foot (bottom edge), the sail has a shorter boom at the top as well as the longer bottom boom. This is an archaic but attractive sail arrangement and isn't generally seen on modern sailing vessels. Brigantines also carried fore-aft sails between the mainmast (rear) and mizzenmast (front) and between the mizzenmast and the bowsprit (a spar jutting forward of the fore-peak of the hull). Now, just to confuse the issue, you can also get 'Square Topsail Schooners' - These have square rigged sails but only on their mizzenmast (forward) and not on their mainmast (aft) as a Brigantine does. Hopefully this has cleared things up a bit - Or maybe not - I tried!
I thoroughly enjoyed this comment, bless you for sharing. The more you know!
@@RealElongatedMuskrat, thank you, you’re very welcome!
I’ve seen this case covered a thousand times, and people almost always focus on the life boat tether theory, but this is the first time I’ve heard about the alcohol explosion theory. Well done!!👍🏾
That's because it's so easily debunked by the fact that there wasn't any sign of an explosion. The best theory that fits all the known facts is that the blinkered chronometer put the ship off-course, both bilge pumps where clogged/broken due to the refit the ship had just had, there was more water in the hold than a captain likes to see, and there was a storm coming or there. He saw one of the Azores and decided to abandon ship until after the storm had passed in order to protect his family. Unfortunately, they were on the wrong side of that island for a safe landing + the storm = everyone died.
More than likely, those barrels were empty long before they got to that side of Atlantic. And it's not like these holds are air/water tight by modern standards, either.
@@Uldihaa People have done tests showing that alcohol fumes can cause a sort of flash fire that burns very briefly and leaves little to no trace afterward so it's possible that something like this occurred and the crew took to the lifeboat in fear that a larger explosion would follow. Another theory is that there was no explosion but leaking barrels filled the hold with fumes which caused the crew to take to the lifeboat in case it ignited.
@@temerityxd8602 But that wouldn't explain the disassembled bilge pump.
And such conditions require an enclosed space with limited airflow, not something you'd find on ships of that era.
Simon: ... modern ships are quite hard to sink.

Until recently ships leaving port stayed on the time zone of their port of origin. Since global positioning wasn't very exact back in the day "Sea time" was something of a guess as to how far you've traveled, and "Land time" was set by the ship's chronograph at departure so it could be ahead or behind depending on what direction you were traveling.
I quite often worked 23 hour days in order to loose time before arrival into port

Simon and ghosts... This sounds like self inflicted pain for Simon.
In Arthur Machen's "The Terror" he describes one aspect of the Terror was a fully stocked ship being found sailing along on the Thames with no living humans aboard, only piles of skeletons of what used to be the crew. He does provide the explanation at the end of the story, but in the middle of the story while the terror is still unfolding and no explanation is yet known, it is a worthy addition to the plot!

oh yes, please do make a video on the Bermuda triangle. I'm sure there are lots of anecdotes about it worth telling
I think the Simon's Writers Association main game is to see who can drive Simon most up the wall
I want to add two things to this.
Firstly, I used to work at a sandblasting/aluminum anodizing plant and we used every chemical under the sun. Methyl ethyl ketone, (something)triethelene, and others I can't even remember the names of. But in the case of industrial cleaners such as that they tend to evaporate VERY fast. The guy I was working with at the time dropped a gallon jug of MEK on the ground which broke and completely evaporated in a spam of 5 minutes. If for some reason 7 BARRELS of a similar liquid leaked rapidly (could be a storm jostled weaker made barrels) the smell would be overwhelming and everyone would probably end up being as high as a kite very rapidly. So any effort to get to a lifeboat may be greatly hindered, also I can't imagine how bad breathing in large volumes of that stuff would be. So now you have 10, probably delirious, potentially dying individuals, trying to man a lifeboat in the storm (or immediate aftermath of a storm) that caused the barrels to leak.
I would saying dying is probably a bit extreme, but I ended up using the MEK for about 15 minutes to degrease some panels (covering the bottle of it with a rag, wetting the rag and closing the bottle.. the same one my friend broke) and I definitely had a "sniff the sharpie" high. Whether it was those fumes replacing the oxygen or what I was definitely not right. This was very minor exposure to a little bit of the stuff. Not 7 BARRELS.
I will give the fallacies to my theory however-
I don't know the distinct properties of this alcohol, and I assumed it would evaporate rapidly due to other industrial cleaners (paint thinner, brake cleaner, MEK, etc) we also don't know the rate as to how fast it leaked out. If it had just seeped out slowly it wouldnt necessarily present a dire emergency.
Last thing, kudos to whoever made it this far.
I would give a LITTLE more credit to the pirate theory. Many pirates tried to get ships to surrender simply by fear. Had a pirate boarding been imminent they could have attempted to flee, giving the pirates the loot on the ship and assumed the pirates wouldn't try to chase because, well, they'd be preoccupied looting. Then from here the pirates could have gotten on board and decided industrial cleaner wasn't necessarily something they wanted to sell. (Doesn't account for lack of other valuables taken) or the pirates themselves saw ANOTHER ship (potentially warship) and decided themselves to flee. Rather than even attempt to board the Mary.
Second is more of a plausible story, first I'm agreeing but adding detail, lmk what you think if you end up reading these.
New watcher? Simon, I've been around for every episode since Business Blaze Ep.1 Keep doing what you do!
Love your new channel. So much Simon content, think i must quit my daytime job.... Wel back to The Casual Criminalist now.
