This is so helpful to see that you redid a painting, and actually changed it quite a bit. And that you struggle with muddying too :) so often we , students, think that all the other artists are getting everything right immediately the first time. And that can be discouraging.

I agree. It's a very important part of any creative process to try a lot of different things, some of which will fail and some that will turn out amazing!

Excellent video, Rachel. I love the philosophy of using only 3 primary colors....it gives your work such harmony. This little dog came out wonderful....one of your best

Excellent video, i believe this is the best way to achieve a great painting, doing it two or three times. Like musicians do, they don't play a song once and jump to another, they practice the same song over and over in order to know it better and get more comfortably progressively. Last version of the dog is a 10 for me, second a 7 and the first one is too heavy in comparison i wont rate it but it sure served its purpose. Thanks and keep going! 👍

Yes, I certainly feel like the more I do a painting, the better it gets each time!

What a beautiful pup portrait! I have learned much, as always. I would like to paint a Newfie that I know, a big black furry dog. I would like to do it transparently, as possible, in watercolor. Any thoughts?

I think to paint black transparently, you have to mix it from staining colors like phthalo blue. I am not a fan of staining colors, so I usually don't paint my black animals truly transparent.

Hello! Awesome video! My question is did you wet the paper prior to starting the painting?
