Saab 96 1.5L V4 Exhaust Comparison - Original & Straight Pipe & Ferguson Muffler

- While doing custom exhaust work, I decided to take video clips with different exhaust combinations. This way I may be able to compare results a bit easier. Sound quality doesn´t make justice to the real life sound experience.
I think that straight pipe or basic flow trough muffler would be too noisy for street driving. I found that Massey Ferguson 135 muffler has the right pipe size and shape to fit quite easily under this Saab. The muffler was also quite cheap for a chambered design muffler.

The V4 almost sounds like a muscle car in my mind.
That is because it fires like a v8 does. Just with half the cylinders

Sweet sound all around with all three exhausts.
It's not running right. One cylinder is misfiring at idle and low rpm. It sounds fine when the throttle is opened a bit. I owned two of these. Gorgeous car.
Thanks for the comment! Yes, the carburetor was not working right at low engine speeds at the time I filmed this video. It had some vacuum circuit problems and also the car had been sitting for a long time. I will restoring and repairing this car, once I have the time for it...

I used an IH muffler on a 4cyl ranger I had it sounded really good like this

I'm thinking in buying one 96 3 cylinder 2 stroke. I live in Brazil and this car is in Uruguay, because of the difficult of searching parts what you suggest me for look in this car for not buy a bad car and see if is all running ok? I love SAAB since I was little!

I personally don 't have experience with the two stroke engine models. Two stroke model is older and engine parts could be harder to find, if needed. But the two stroke engine is basically simpler, so if it's not seized (engine rotates freely), it shouldn't take too much work to fire up or be repaired.
If the engine runs and the car drives, you could check that the freewheel clutch works. Most of the two stroke models (at least the later ones) should have gearbox with freewheel clutch. This means that if you are driving steady speed and you let off the gas pedal, car should roll freely without speed slowing down too fast. So engine RPMs will drop, but it doesn't have the "engine braking" function. In my 4-stroke model it also has the same gearbox with freewheel, but the clutch can be locked via cable, which is placed in front passenger foot area inside cabin. Two stroke model might also have this cable to lock the freewheel, but maybe its best to leave untouched for now, if it works :D
Biggest problem with these Saabs are usually with rust :) I am not sure, how harsh the climate is there in Uruguay...but I would guess that near ocean it is as problematic as here in northern "arctic" countries.
When inspecting the body from outer side, you should check the "rocker panels" especially where jackstand places are. Jackstand places have thicker metal structure welded to the rocker panel. Usually the rocker panel around the jacking place rusts away.
When inspecting body from the inside, you should check rear shock absorber upper mounting points. These can only be seen by opening the trunk lid and looking inside the trunk. Metal in these shock mounting points has many weird shapes and it is quite nasty job to fix rust in here.
Otherwise I would say that these Saabs are quite reliable and simple. Only the rear drum brakes have their specialties. My Saabs other rear brake is leaking inside the drum assembly, but I haven't opened or inspected the thing yet. I have repair book for these Saabs and if I remember correctly, rear brakes needed some extra fiddling to get the brake drums out (don't remember if loosening procedure was weirder or if it may need pulling tools or something).
