My continuing look at the Bond film franchise. Now we're up to Roger Moore taking on the role of 007.
Continued in Part 3.5. This one started to snowball away from me and I ended up really pontificating and getting more detailed in this installment. It was meant to be shorter, but what the heck.
Hey, everyone has their own personal taste when it comes to Bond films. Fans have their own favorites, their own preferences and their own ideas of what a Bond film should be. Which ones succeeded and which ones failed. While one fan might rank one as their favorite, another fan could rank it as the worst. So feel free to chime in with your thoughts, but please try to keep it above a third grade level and be respectful of other Bond Fans opinions.

Honestly, Roger Moore is actually a great actor. The problem, however, is the time in which the films were made. Somehow, and I know this because my parents grew up in this era, the 70s and 80s were just an odd time with things rapidly changing so much and people trying to push the boundaries so much that they just ended up looking kinda silly. Anyway, I don't think Moore is the one at fault for him looking silly at times.... Plus he's probably the nicest guy who ever played Bond.
Roger Moore represents an older, not so serious Bond who for the most part doesn't take his job as seriously as he did years prior. Why? The death of his wife. In short, he hides his pain by having a sense of humor.
In this version, he's also accepted the fact that there is no happy ending for him. He will be a double O until the day he dies, so he tries to have as much fun as he can.
+Jacob Sailer That's a great summary. Some Bond fans criticize Roger Moore these days after seeing actors like Timothy Dalton and Daniel Craig play a colder character but Moore was great in his own way.
+Jacob Sailer Humor is a defense mechanism that I use on a regular basis, so I can identify with that.
***** Actually, I personally believe he retires in Octopussy (to me that was the end of his story, in my head the one with Max Zorin comes before this one), having finally found a good women who can keep up with him without getting killed.
So a new 007 is recruited. Starts out cold, but once again mellows into a more jokey self in Pierce Brosnan.
***** Not Moore, but like him.
"She also did enjoy a good squeeze."
***** "Shocking."
R.I.P. Sir Roger. You were my first Bond. 1973. Goodbye, Mr Bond.
Everytime I see Sheriff Pepper I do think of Gleason's Buford T. Justice. You might be right and he might have had some kind of inspiration for the character.
Hahahah I disagree with you take that American who should not like James Bond because they are british lol only joking but LIVE AND LET DIE is considered by many fans as a classic
Definitely enjoy Live and Let Die a lot more than you did, but this is great review series nevertheless. Nice work!
TMWTGG and LALD are all about the fun. Too much serious critique on what could be said to be tongue-in-cheek films is kind of ridiculous. I love these films because they are hard working efforts and so much fun. Roger is cool.
2:20 if you count Connery's voice over work in the From Russia With Love video game, he beats Moore's record for playing the character the most times.
5:43 "so speak or forever hold your PIECE" :D totally didnt get that until now! hilarious! :D
That opening sequence between 0:18 and 1:17 , just reminded me again of how cool Roger Moores Bond was!! Makes me want to watch all his movies over again now! Great job!
And Pepper was liked by audiences a lot, and Cubby Broccoli liked his character and Clifton James a lot and asked him to come back again.
Live and let die is great. So is the spy who loved me. If you want to play the bonds ranking game you can't see them for what they are.
I pretty much agree with your insights, though you seemed to like Live and Let Die more than I did. I found Jane Seymour the only redeeming thing about that movie.
I've been watching your HaphazardStuff for over 11 years. Keep 'em rolling. Saw "Thunderball" in '65 when my parents took me along, 5 yrs old. Hooked ever since. So you just KNOW how grateful I was to see your compilations. Good job, my man. Thank You.
Thank you so much my friend! I'm not sure if I'm more appreciate that you've been continuing to watch my projects for that long or amazed that it's been that long I've been making them. Geez! Back then I thought I would make a few videos for acouple months and that would be it. It's great to hear there's been some folks who've stuck it out with me that long! Major thanks! It sounds like you're a major Bond fan too, seeing Thunderball in theaters - perhaps you should be doing some of your own 007 projects!
J.W. Pepper. One of the best supporting Bond characters ever. He is in the car with Bond during one of the greatest stunts of all time, and a non-CGI stunt at that. Britt Ekland in a bikini is never a bad idea. Live and Let Die and Man With the Golden Gun are not on the level of Spy Who Loved Me, but I enjoyed both films. Obviously Moore is my favorite Bond, the man took lemons and made lemonade. But I honestly have to put Goldfinger as the best of the franchise .
Clint Eastwood turned down the James Bond role as he felt that it should be played by a British actor. He was right, and maximum respect to Blondie for making that sensible point!
'You have a nasty habit of surviving' great way that he delivered that line
Part 4 is coming up soon. No idea how many Parts total this will go on for.
I'm just making it up as I go.
"The man with the golden gun" wast the first bond film i saw. great vid.
I got that one from this CD simply titled 'James Bond - The Themes From All 15 Bond Films' released in 1988. There isn't any artist info, just the 15 tracks. I've used several of the tracks during many of these videos.
my youth- Moore rules- yup best times baby
Wonderful commentary on the franchise. Concise and entertaining.
Roger Moore is the Bond that is taken for granted! I need say no more.
The infamous Roger Moore Bond movies! The Man With the Golden Gun, A View to a Kill, Moonraker... OMG! O_O
Excellent editing on the opener of this chapter.
Mr Bigs death exit in Live & Let Die was the silliest of them all...
''roger moore'' and ''piece brosney'' best james bonds ever
I'm an American who is a huge Bond fan and I highly agree.
Born in the mid 60's, I came to watch Bond in the Roger Moore years and I love him and "Live and Let die" is my favorite of his era. But I must say that the current Craig Daniels era is the best action.
Whatt! the boat chase in live and let die is AWESOME if they remade that scene it would probably be the best action film of the year
Really enjoying these Bond vids. You have done a great job.
When I was kid one of my favorites TV series was the "Saint" with Roger Moore as Simon Templar and, due that, I never could see him as James Bond.
What is the name of the theme that plays in the beginning of this video. I know it's the "Bond theme" but what's the title exactly. I've heard it play in a lot of trailers the last couple Bond movies.
ok it was fun... like most of Bond's nemesis, goldfinger being squeezed through that planes porthole :) My fav could be From Russia with Love or Goldfinger but i do like them all actually... apart from Die Another Day which thankfully i missed at the time and looking back on it... i was lucky to :)
Hi, can you tell me which mic you use to do voiceover? Thanks.
Very enjoyable and interesting series on Bond, wish they were longer! Good videos!
A lot of people dump on MWTGG but I thought it was a lot of fun. I agree though that story would have been better if they threw away the solar energy plot and just focused on the duel between Bond and Scaramanga.
I'm an American and I'm glad too.
I agree about that. I feel that Moore and Lee make TMWTGG the movie excellent.
I meant that underwater snake kind of thing scene...before 0:38...a couple of milis
I am an American and I am glad that James Bond is always kept a British actor.
Not always. George Lazenby is Australian and Pierce Brosnan is Irish.
In my opinion, "Live and Let Die" is one of the best Bond movies. The villain is mean, the henchman is intimidating, The villain's plan is realistic, Jane Seymour is very good, the boat chase is nice. Even JW Pepper is OK in this movie. There was also the bus scene, and the extermination of the villain is very unusual (before Roy Scheider in Jaws). OK, the alligator scene is silly, and the movie is very politically incorrect, but it is a good Bond movie, despite what's said in this review.
Thanks man. And there's nothing wrong with disagreements.
Roger Bond is best Bond! :P
Roger Moore had a bit of a slow start but he did develop into a solid Bond. Moore was never my favourite but I've grown to appreciate his style much more. LALD isn't very good but I think TMWTGG takes an unfair beating, I think it's a pretty fun movie.
The era of comedy/parody begins with ''Diamonds are Forever'' and finishes with ''Octopussy''. Roger Moore, especially from ''The Spy Who Loved Me'', was the right man at the right time (except ''A View to a Kill''). I can imagine Connery in ''Live and Let Die'' (producers wanted him), if they made the film in 1972 to celebrate ten years Bond films.
Roger Moore best bond forever!!!
Moores bond movies apart from a few were always fun
live and let die is brilliant!!!
I know it was used in the Casino trailer. They might have used segments of it for QoS too.
With Moore I could imagine that he was the same James Bond from the earlier movies. When he visits his wife's grave in "For Your Eyes Only" they didn't have to hide her date of death. They just admitted, "Yeah, Bond is getting old. So what? He's still awesome." Whereas when they referenced her again in "Licence to Kill," it was a little bit off-putting for me because Timothy Dalton (who I love, so don't get me wrong) was obviously not the same James Bond from "On Her Majesty's Secret Service." It's as if that Bond left with Moore.
I'm up to Moonraker in Moore's stuff, I have to say that my favorite film of his so far is The Man With The Golden Gun. Christopher Lee and him had great chemistry.
@ianne9 i agree with you on that
Bond isn't my absolute favourite movie series, but like most people I'm a fan. I've rewatched the series on DVD and I have to agree with HaphazardStuff. Both of Moore's first films are dull and Moore wasn't allowed to play the part his way until SWLM. Can't fault any of the criticisms in the video review and it appeared that the producers weren't entirely confident about the series at this stage. It's a real shame that Guy Hamilton was responsible for both, Goldfinger being a series high.
thanks...although i have seen moonraker...dont remem...i shall check it out
Brother, you rock!!! I love your documentaries, I can tell you are a real Bond fan like me!!!
John Barry score for The man with the golden gun? One reason why god gave us ears.
Even though I really love Roger Moore as James Bond I’d have to agree on live and let die, the first half is entertaining and fun to watch but as it gets to the second half it gets boring after a while, I agree it was kinda funny seeing Bond walking in a 70’s Harlem bar and not to mention wearing a black trench coat over his suit, with bond wearing that it really didn’t make him look like a spy in fact it kinda made him look more like Sherlock Holmes rather than Bond, and because of the acting, story line and the clothing it did kinda feel like a Scooby doo adventure but also kinda like Adam West batman adventure, Roger Moore made some good and bad films
I love LALD and what strikes me is if you watch Diamonds are Forever immediately followed by LALD Diamonds seems a much older film and watching them now its as if the Connery films are just old films whereas LALD is a typical 'modern' film with well made action and chases. I find Moore's Bond a much easier character to watch than Connery's. Connery just seems to have an air of arrogance about him whereas Moore seems much friendlier and likable and thus more watchable.
I'm quite fond of 'The Man With The Golden Gun', it's FUN, sometimes that's enough.
during filming, moore injured his leg from a boat crash, developed kidney stones, and got a bad flue. I've read the 007 diaries
how do you get that special music???
sheriff pepper was an excellent fun character in the Live and Let die, he had some great lines that crack me up even today. His dialogue in the next movie however was less well written and less funny.
best Bond Man with a Golden Gun.
Pepper is the best about Live and Let Die :D
Have to disagree with you on 'Golden Gun.' Loved that movie. Maybe because I saw it when I was a boy. I still have a crush on Goodnight. :)
My top 5 bond themes off the top of my head
1. OHMSS
2. You Know my Name
3. Goldfinger
4. View to a Kill
5. A tie:,Living Daylights & From Russia with Love theme.
@Lollertron Exactly.
Whats the bond theme interpretation from mate? who is playing it?
"Live and Let Die" is my favourite Bond movie.
@Wadsy591 Oh yeah thats right, that was a pretty good fight. The man
with the golden gun!I did'nt think it was great, but it also to me was'nt
horrible. The reason why that is is because usly if there is a film you
like about it and something you dont like about it.Then that means its
in between.but it was a little slow though, that was the problem. But
FYEO will always be my favorite moore bond film.I do agree with you
that it is great.
Well, I disagree. The man with the Golden Gun is my favorite Bond Movie and Live and Let Die is right up there. Those two films were much better then any of Connery's movies. I do not mind a little bit of humor in my movies and I think that Sheriff Pepper was the precurser to Gleason's role in Smokey and the Bandit.
The Man with the Golden Gun i agree is pretty ridiculous but i think its alotta fun. Its more suited for Roger Moore which is why i find it better than Live and Let Die. Other than that I agree with most of what u say
FYI, Herve Villachaise is pronounce Air-vay Vee-a-shez.
Honestly live and let die is not too good, but I really like the man with the golden gun
by the way this is an excellent report and essay on the series
Roger Moore was the only James Bond to properly brace his pistol.
Your descriptions of the films are very well thought out, though I do disagree with some of them. Nonetheless, top marks....
Mr. Big looked confident in taking on James Bond in their fight, but it was disappointing. Roger Moore just seemed to own his ass, if you watch the fight scene. The Man With the Golden Gun was one of, if not, the slowest moving James Bond film ever... ...And, in my opinion, yes, they were right in having J.W. Peppar a second time. He was hilarious and was one of my favorite Bond characters!
007 - For Your Eyes Only
Yeah, I agree he was the BOMB
I don't know why TMWTGG gets so much flak. I think it's a great film. The darker tone from Moore in this film was great and he does it well. LALD is also a great one.
This was Bond at his best!
Lol, I'm an American and I agree with you 100%
you have interesting opinions, I agree with almost everything
what did roger moore wear in the movie octopussy. when he arrived on a crocodile submarine. when he meet octopussy what color dress shirt, vest and pants he wore in the movie octopussy.
I watched The Man w/ the Golden Gun today and i have to disagree....it was EPIC!
Man With the Golden Gun is the best Bond movie for kids.
Great and interesting recaps/reviews, although I would liked that the Sean Connery movie-reviews were as in-depth as the Roger Moore reviews.. I don't agree with all of your opinions, but major Bond-fans like you and me never do (on every level), right?
@Wadsy591 You know now that you said that I remember you.Hey wuz
up!I cant remember what we were debating about but,its cool.Well all of
us seem to have are own opinion's but if you dont like the man with the
golden gun! What do you think about Scaramanga???
great roger!!!
@Wadsy591 You mean to tell me That Live and let die was one
of his Least???Are you kidding me????That's what proved that
he was great for bond in the first place.
The man with the golden gun could have been a success if they stuck with the plot that was in the book
whats the name of the soundtrack?
Pierce Brosnan and Sean Connery. Moore is awesome too :)
Likewise
Roger Moore, my mothers favorite bond
Moore is not my favorite Bond but I gotta hand it to him, he kept the Bond franchis going.
which movie is scene 0:38 from ?
I like all James Bonds, none of them failed to me in the slightest.
@58fenix
It was The Living Daylights and Dalton we were on about back in the day :).
Scaramanga was OK as a villain, but the awful script and plot didn't really give any of the actors a chance to shine.. There's not really one thing I enjoyed about Golden Gun, and Roger Moore himself seemed bored with the movie.
