    I gotta say Orano is a really great one shot character. Despite having about two and a half minutes of screen time, he had a memorable personality, an important role in the plot and comes across as a very effective and disciplined agent.

    Londo verbally blames Mordin for playing him like a puppet. But he is most angry and unforgiving of HIMSELF. He finally realizes at this moment that Adira's death was due to his own choices. He feels as if he put the poison in her drink himself, because of his association with Morden and the Shadows. That's what I got from this scene. Outstanding work by Peter Jurasik. Also notice the change in camera work starting at about 2 minutes 45 seconds in. It changes from a standard camera lock down with pan and slow zoom to handheld steadycam, following Londo around the room as he destroys it in tighter and tighter spirals, mirroring Londo's own thoughts as they circle and accuse himself. Finally coming to rest on Londo looking into the eyes of a small picture of the one person he holds most responsible for all of this - Londo Mollari.

"President Clarke (who was Vice President at the time) left Earth Force One claiming to have the flu. 24 hours later, Earth Force One blows up. Pretty convenient flu don't you think?" Later on in the series, Sheridan is asked to help the doctor who looked after Vice President Clarke at the time and had evidence that the VP Clarke had faked the flu. • @Diego-zz1df
      @Diego-zz1df 3 года назад +1

      Yes, but they structured most episodes in a way that still left you with a 40-minutes story with a beginning, middle and end. None of this perpetual "to be continued" serialized bullshit where characters are forced to be stupid or have a mental breakdown at inexplicable times or just act completely out of character because the season's plot requires them to.
      I think B5 & DS9 were both great at this in their own unique ways: From the beginning they started to build a greater story, one seemingly stand-alone episode at a time, and then later in the series each episode adds to it, but without removing that compartmentalized storytelling that allows you to create amazing character interactions and character development.
      This scene started with an early episode about Londo rescuing a slave he fell in love with.

      Not to knock JMS, who did a fine job with B5, In a Different World with my Smartphone is doing the same thing. On the surface, it's a pretty standard isekai harem anime, but it actually has a much deeper story being set up than you'd think from watching S1.
      Without giving any spoilers, I can tell you that as of S1, the main plot hasn't even really got going (there is a tiny glimpse, but unless you've read ahead in the LN, you almost certainly won't spot it as such), and the MC hasn't even met his main waifu yet. There are a lot of things that happen early on that will influence the story later. I hope it gets enough seasons to actually tell the story, because it is also an isekai harem anime, it's actually quite a decent bit of storytelling

    I was never really a great fan of the Londo character until this episode. He is in many way a classic tragic Shakespearean character, and in this case he reminded me of Othello.

    • @OreadNYC
      @OreadNYC 7 лет назад +14

      Either that or Greek tragedy. One defining characteristic of the Greek tragic hero is that he bears the lion's share of the responsibility for his own suffering because of overconfidence in his own power (such as Agamemnon) or else because he quite simply doesn't know when to leave well enough alone (such as Oedipus). I would say that this is true of Londo as well. Londo has enemies, yes...but they don't do him nearly as much damage as he does to himself. I think Londo realizes to some extent that he's trapped by the decisions he's made in the name of ambition...but I don't think he realizes until much later just how much his own choices have cost him. He who would dance must pay the piper and all that..

      @Josh M The turning point for G'Kar was when Kosh "spoke" to him telepathically, after he assaulted Londo using that drug to induce telepathy. Unfortunately I don't remember when the turning point occurred for Londo; as it was subtle, spanning over many episodes.

    This is such a powerful scene as the relationship between Londo and Adira was a rare thing in a society dominated by arranged marriages and marriages of convenience. They genuinely loved one another and Morden took it all away. Makes you realise just how evil Morden was as to him everyone was a pawn to be used by him and his 'associates' i.e the Shadows.

    Babylon 5 really was more (and still very much is ), realistic than Star Trek.
    The most worrying thing is, that Babylon 5 might only hint at what is now happening right now in the real world.

    • @NoJusticeNoPeace
      @NoJusticeNoPeace 4 года назад

      No, it's not more realistic. It just serves a different function. Star Trek was always intended by Roddenberry to be an optimistic vision of a future where people are _better._ Not perfect. Not Utopian. Humans were still fallible in Star Trek, but Roddenberry wanted to show people a culture where people looked for a brighter and more hopeful future instead of dwelling on the greed and jealousy and ignorance and hate of which humans are capable.
      B5 is about showing people as they are now. A brutally honest examination of what is good and what is bad in us, and how the balance tips easily between the two, even in each individual.
      The remake of Battlestar Galactica, on the other hand, is the true anti-Star Trek. It goes completely in the other direction, grinding people's noses in everything which is dark, evil, repugnant, selfish, and hateful in humanity.

      I never really considered either Londo or G'Kar "villains" at any point throughout the series. Antagonistic towards one another and each others' races, yes, but not really villains. Each was motivated by different things - Londo by his desire for power, and G'Kar by his people. By the time this scene happened, I had considered Londo and G'Kar to be in the same boat because of everything that had happened with Cartagia. What I disagree with is people who say Londo was totally redeemed by the series' end. He is a tragic figure, without a doubt, and he did his best to make amends, but he also continued to make poor choices and bad decisions. In the end, he was almost redeemed - and one feels sorry for him because he almost made it. I'm sorry that was so long-winded.

    • @edthejester
      @edthejester Год назад +1

      Oh I agree with you both; ultimately the word "villain" has no meaning in that sense. After all we are all the product of our experiences and circumstances, no matter if you are a fictional character or the leader of a country that recently invaded it's neighbour.
      On second thought, no. He WAS a villain. It's just that we saw why he made the choices that he did, and we saw him change and redeem himself. Just like can happen in.real life, he changed. But just ask G'Kar if he was a villain during the Narn occupation.
