This movie was great on so many levels. Not to mention its horror themes were based on urban social issues affecting the black community. Im going to watch it again now. Thanks.
The line made by the teacher: “Boy must’ve had weak bones” always tickled my mother so much 😂 With that being said, as a kid, when I saw this, I thought Walter was being touched in a way that a child shouldn’t be touched. As an adult I look at and feel it was definitely Walter being sexually abused because of two things: 1) Walter said the monster told him no one would believe him. That’s typical of abusers to tell the children that they won’t be believed by anyone else 2) when we hear the cries of “No”, “Stop”, and when he said “Mommy” quietly were signs that it wasn’t just whoopings. I could be stretching it but just felt it was more than just beatings
the cries walter let out while being abused always haunted me since childhood. even as a small child, i knew it didnt sound like him getting beat and it was something really hurting him in a different way (and it was just so frightening to me), but never thought about it further than that. i kinda just left my thinking at the age i was at when i first watched this film. but as soon as i saw the title of this video, i felt i knew what happened to walter. 1. this monster comes to his room while the boy is in bed at night. 2. this is a regular nightly visit. not an "oooh. you're gonna get it." it's a routine. this, in itself, indicates sexual abuse. 3. he just waits under the covers. not in the closet, not under the bed, not in the corner. but in the covers where he knows he would most likely be told to go position himself as he had many nights before. 4. that cry. even if you didnt hear the whips and hits, his cry doesnt come in spurts like being hit. it is a continual "i am in pain" cry. i dont know how else to explain it.
When Tyrone is being carted off and the man says "Boy must've had weak bones" always took me out. Not WHAT he says, but HOW he said it. I remember seeing it at the movie theater and the whole audience was rollin'! I alway got so mad at the teacher for getting knocked so easily by the stepdad! He gave no competition to him when he came back in to help. And sitting on the stairs was my thing as a kid when I wanted to be nosey! The way the house was set up, no one could see me sitting there unless they were on the stairs or walking by them going from the living room to the dining room. So I could hear everything, but no one knew I was there. I learned a lot by just being quiet and sitting on the stairs for a while. Your observation about that's spot on.
Tennille Bowens....We Have To Look At The Stepfather As Being Crazy And He's Also Evil A Deadly Combination So He Is Going To Have A Enormous Amount Of Strength The Teacher Just Didn't Have Hands He'd Fight If He Has Too But Like Me He Has No Hands But like Me He Will Stand Up For Himself If He Has To.
This is more tragic if you think of Walter as someone with powers who isn’t aware of them. There’s a small chance that he killed his own father accidentally. He might have also accidentally manifested the “monster” or made an already abusive individual worse. If a strange man started seeing your widowed mother, you might see him as a threat. And, if you’re Walter, reality might start changing to make it a reality. The trick with the paper was him learning how to focus his ability,
When Walter folded twisted the paper and Carl twisted around that was the funniest part of the movie because I knew it was fake as hell. David Allen Grier sells the pain so well 41:03 and his expressions are hilarious . 41:47. It was masterfully done and still cracks me up
I could be wrong but the shadow of Walter's step-dad on the wall resembled the devil form the funeral director takes at the end. Makes me wonder if it was him or something along those lines
I believe the reason the teacher made Walter burn the paper was to give him a sense of victory over his biggest fear... For him to see the end of the monster that caused his trauma.
I believe the funeral home director, he had no reason to lie to the young men who were already dead and didn’t know it. He was giving them teachable moments before he burned them in Hell. Great video.
@@AxiomAmnesia Yes that is true, but why lie when we SAW what happened in each story, and the consequences of the miscreants involved? The young thugs didn't believe him anyway, and they still were judged and incinerated in the end. LOL
@@leerhode1021 If you study NDE, many people have reported false light, or visions from relatives before being taken to hell. @@mightywisdom88 I do hear what you are saying, but what was the payoff for the demon? This part in the movie completely disturbed my soul as a child and it still does as an adult. Hearing him plead for the monster to stop. It was just a really f***d up scene period. I hate it .
Being a kid in the 90s when this came out, I can attest to the vacancy of the teacher. From my experience growing up, a lot of teachers back then seemed oblivious as hell and they missed a lot, especially in the private school setting (at least a good deal of mine did). So, Walter's teacher not catching any kind of hint was apt to me as a kid as it is now.
For the story with Walter...I always wonder why his momma ain't try to hide the bruises before he went to school. Maybe she wanted someone to contact the authorities...maybe that's the only way to protect him
I think the teacher gave the paper to Walter to burn as a way of empowerment. The boy was not able to stand up to the monster before but now he could finally feel like he defeated the monster with his own hands after so much abuse.
Walter said he wanted to burn the monster to the teacher in the classroom during recess. He had to take responsibility of his recovery from the trauma he endured.
Also how at the very few times when Walter wasn’t showing up at school with any new bruises or anything or “provoking” him, but this man was going in his room every night. The signs were very obvious.
David Alan Grier is one of my favorite comedians, but seeing him in this role was a stark mood whiplash. This and his role in Queen Sugar as an abusive ex-husband who preys on defenseless women just made me go "Wow."
I think the teacher let Walter burn the paper because the little boy deserved to get his lick back as well. I don't think the teacher was trying to get out of the crime. At the end of the day he did turn on the stove so that Walter can burn the paper, so his hands were still in it. I also don't think it's the teacher in my opinion
Just FYI in case case you didn't know, David Alan Grier is an established practitioner of martial arts from early in his life in addition to his entertainment career. So his movements and strikes are a direct result of his prior training. You can even see this briefly displayed in a few scenes from his character role alongside Damon Wayans within the movie Blankman.
The scene where Walter balls up the picture of his bully is absolutely terrifying. Especially since we don't see his injuries. The bully's screams are bloodcurdling and the sound of the paper being balled up almost parallels the bully's bones breaking.
I think the reason the teacher let Walter burn the picture instead of doing it himself is because that wasn't the teachers trauma to triumph over. Walter and his mother were the victims, therefore that was their power to take back
There's a theory that Walter's classmate might have practice Voodoo. She must have taught Walter voodoo by drawing the picture of the person and destroy it.
Walter was being raped and beaten. If you look at the drawing the monster is naked and only has shoes on. In one of the scenes the monster is breathing heavily while walter is crying and they show you the picture of the naked monster as the camera moving towards walter room window
I don't think that's what's being portrayed by that scene. I think that's just how he drew the monster because he's never seen him without shoes on. And if you have on shoes, chances are you have on clothes. I have never seen anyone who's naked, but puts their shoes back on. Especially when they are about to do something sexual, abuse or not.
the door symbolized his innocence being taking and safespace being evaded thats why they showed kids toys and play items as symbolising that walter wanted to be a regular kid but he was living in a nightmare trapped and unprotected since his dad was deaceased leaving him powerless and a victim
He WAS an actual Monster. He wore the skin to blend in and people don't see him as he truly is. Always know that your "shadow/ false face will always reveal who you truly are. Ask me how I know...my father was a Monster.
I agree with you when spoke about how children perceive you during these acts. And it very possibly that when children coming out the womb they recollect so much from different realms, their veil is very thin so they see what some adults don’t
If I saw this I’m calling the police. I would feel obligated to do something. Truth be told I’m less worried about the police killing the abusive stepfather, than I am the stepfather killing the kid and his mother. Let’s not act like abusers don’t kill their whole families. I can’t have that on my conscience.
Did you see that recent story where the 11-year old boy was shot after calling the police because his mama's baby daddy was getting outta hand? Luckily the boy survived a shot to the chest, but this JUST happened.
I never realized the possibly of walter being SA, i knew he was abused but never looked at this like he was being SA. I do think the mother knew but didnt want to do anything because she was possibly scared of the step father. Also now knowing this makes the story very very very dark.
I'm starting to think this Tale was really about the teacher who wanted revenge on his Stepdad and childhood bully, so he reverts back in his mind to his childhood where he sees his younger self, and gives him powers on how to handle his bullies. That's why each time when the school bully gets hurt or when his Stepdad was being burned, the teacher was always there giving Walter more instruction on how to handle his bullies.
I think the mother was flirting to try and get him to lighten up and hopefully leave the subject alone (he wouldn’t want to suspect them as much if he liked her) because Walter stated that they’ve moved a lot already due to his “stories”; presumably because teachers kept noticing something was wrong. I believe she was doing it out of necessity not because she wanted to be disloyal. Particularly when she saw the look the teacher gave her when she dropped the paper at the door. She probably thought charming him would be an effective way to get out of suspicion (especially before her husband got home because his behavior would be even more suspicious due to his callous and controlling demeanor) and the eventual move away if they began to catch on.
This is my favorite tale in the movie because its more different from the others tales! The other stories deals with racism in other forms while this story deals with child abuse!
20:53-21:12 Most parents, abusive or not, stress to their children that what happens at home stays at home. But, when you're in an abusive relationship, and your child is being beaten to the point of serious harm/or possibly death, that makes you just as responsible as your mate who is doing the abusing.
Oh u gon draw a picture of somebody & make them look like a Monstaa! I was watching this video for the second time & almost thought y'all didn't mention the tattoo, but Heit spoke on it. Even tho David Alan Grier played a messed up role in this movie, I still laughed at certain points when his voice changed. And the teacher regretted stepping in immediately! Ain't no at least i tried if it wasn't for Walter & that drawing.
The teacher gave Walter the 'honors' because he needed the closure the most. The mother didn't seek help; Walter did. The teacher didn't ultimately find the Monster's weak spot; Walter did. Not only did Walter as the most innocent and vulnerable person need it; he earned it. I also think Walter left the picture in the class on purpose. He believed it could work, but because he has a good heart, he didn't want to use it. That's how the teacher ended up with it. Weak bones
This is an amazing breakdown! Tales from the Hood was an amazing experience for me as an actor. Something I look back on as an older man with a different perspective and even greater appreciation. I never thought about whether or not Walter was possibly being SA by his mom’s boyfriend. It is something I’d like to ask Rusty. Love the channel. 👍🏾

34:46 the police NEVER get anywhere in a hurry. Especially to a black household. The state of North Carolina just approved not having a permit for a firearm. I will just have to keep one on me.
I believe that the teacher gave Walter the paper to burn because it was him and his mother who was tormented by the monster. Not the teacher. Walter has to destroy the monster to end the cycle of abuse and it could also help the mother and son move on without an actual mental break.
did u notice that the shadow of the monster is similar to that of Sim's devil form. I noticed that in subsequent viewings after the first time seeing this. always thought that was a case of forshadowing
Unfortunately, Walter was definitely being sexually assaulted in that movie. In the scene where the camera was outside of the window you can hear the “monster” growling while Walter is saying “ow, stop, ow ow stop” 😢 if you’ve been through such traumatic experiences as a child, rather it’s real life or portrayed on tv, you just know
Weak bones. It's crazy because I didn't think of the SA that Walter could be going through. But it made sense that if the monster felt untouchable, it would do whatever it wanted.

All this could have been avoided if Walter would have just crumbled the picture of Carl once he saw . Didn't he see what he did to Tyrone? I'm sure that news went all over the school. I would have crumbled that picture with the quickness. Saved everyone an ass whooping.
I would never let that happen I I would tell him you want to fight then you fight a real man don't you be hitting on no kid and don't hit on a woman because if you're going to do that you're just proving you are a coward
Also, there's a song by Tony, Toni, Tone called Little Walter, and it talks about Little Walter, being abused. I think this story might have been based off that song too.
Y’all gotta remember that Sims funeral home is a front. Hell I think the gangbangers had a false memory implanted in them so they wouldn’t be questioning why they’re antes to go there in the first place. Sims and everything around them dudes, is nothing but literal Hell disguised to mimic their normal environment and desires to get them where he wanted them. Carl’s body was there as another evil soul or remnant of a story involving evil to show them what awaited them. His actual body probably was never recovered, it was just showing what his body would look like in hell.
I remember watching this movie as a kid. I had to be like 9-10 years old. The puppet scene gave me nightmares until I was a teen. Now as an adult, I understand it and especially what happened to that racist white man. Lmaooo
Good points again. I actually do relate to thie one having the name "Walter." My mom worked two jobs, and never had any men around because she was worried about influence or abuse. Totally opposite of that kids mother. As a father it makes me want to go in on her but at the same time we dont know what kinda damage Walters dad dying did to her and maybe she was just a shell. Also I can relate because when i was about the age of the kid Walter in the movie the song "Little Walter" by Tony Toni Tone came out and people use to sing it to me and it always scared the hell out of me. Finally, the teacher should have suspected the parents right away, but this move was years ago now days teachers are trained better to look for and report abuse.
Yes, I remember that song! Also, we give Walter's dad the benefit of the doubt, but we don't know what kind of man he was before he died either.... IJS

Wait a minute all these years you got me on this one I didn't realize that until now. That's sick happen to know he got he is on the end that monster!!!😢
That would be a shock. But all I get out of it comes from the "You ain't my son!" genre of wicked stepdads.
Yea I came to that realization a few years back .. so tragic
Wait what I thought Walter only got beaten not sexually abused as well
This movie was great on so many levels. Not to mention its horror themes were based on urban social issues affecting the black community. Im going to watch it again now. Thanks.
The line made by the teacher: “Boy must’ve had weak bones” always tickled my mother so much 😂
With that being said, as a kid, when I saw this, I thought Walter was being touched in a way that a child shouldn’t be touched. As an adult I look at and feel it was definitely Walter being sexually abused because of two things:
1) Walter said the monster told him no one would believe him. That’s typical of abusers to tell the children that they won’t be believed by anyone else
2) when we hear the cries of “No”, “Stop”, and when he said “Mommy” quietly were signs that it wasn’t just whoopings.
😢
That part about the weak bones always made be laugh! LOL
@@AxiomAmnesia That Shit Was Funny
Tennille Bowens....We Have To Look At The Stepfather As Being Crazy And He's Also Evil A Deadly Combination So He Is Going To Have A Enormous Amount Of Strength The Teacher Just Didn't Have Hands He'd Fight If He Has Too But Like Me He Has No Hands But like Me He Will Stand Up For Himself If He Has To.
I can relate to sitting on the top of the stairs listening to grown folks business.
@@AxiomAmnesia that “weak bones” legit makes me laugh each and Everytime.
41:47. It was masterfully done and still cracks me up
😂
I'm happy you made this review. I didn't realize the "S. A." abuse until heit mentions the noise made by Walter and there are no blows landing.
I hadn't realized it either until we were re-watching it and Heit made that observation!
I could be wrong but the shadow of Walter's step-dad on the wall resembled the devil form the funeral director takes at the end. Makes me wonder if it was him or something along those lines
I just realized that.
Interesting assumption. Wouldn't be surprised. Old lore stated the devil loved taking the form of a black man.
😆 but he was also the devil, so there's that part. 😂
@@AxiomAmnesia Yes that is true, but why lie when we SAW what happened in each story, and the consequences of the miscreants involved? The young thugs didn't believe him anyway, and they still were judged and incinerated in the end. LOL
@@AxiomAmnesia Now I concede that he lied letting them think they were still alive… 🤔
@@leerhode1021 If you study NDE, many people have reported false light, or visions from relatives before being taken to hell. Not saying take what I say off face value, but it makes sense if you tie in the devil being the father of lies, and how demons are used to manipulate people, as well as spiritual attacks, so it's possible.
@@mightywisdom88 I do hear what you are saying, but what was the payoff for the demon? Was watching the shock on their faces once they realized that they were already dead in their caskets right before going to hell? What was the endgame In this episode? I’m not understanding your point (pardon me).
This part in the movie completely disturbed my soul as a child and it still does as an adult. Hearing him plead for the monster to stop. It was just a really f***d up scene period. I hate it .
Me too
Monster held onto that skillet even after being twisted 😂
Weak bones. @ 35:56 the trade Mark funniest line in the whole movie. " You wanna draw somebody lookin like a MUNNN-STUHH!!!"
😂
Being a kid in the 90s when this came out, I can attest to the vacancy of the teacher. From my experience growing up, a lot of teachers back then seemed oblivious as hell and they missed a lot, especially in the private school setting (at least a good deal of mine did). So, Walter's teacher not catching any kind of hint was apt to me as a kid as it is now.
I don't think teachers were equipped back then to handle that kind of stuff. They really didn't do anything unless they visibly see bruises.
And unfortunately a lot of teachers still don’t pay attention or care about their students wellbeing.
Y'all did it again. I can't wait until you analyze the Krazy K story. Walter knows voodoo.
We already did! Check it out.
That was apart of the original first video they posted. I can’t wait for them to do the doll story.
If you look closely walter has a voodoo stick on the side of his bed it's a skull cane never noticed it til now
I gotta look closely at the pictures and stuff in Walter's room again.
For the story with Walter...I always wonder why his momma ain't try to hide the bruises before he went to school. Maybe she wanted someone to contact the authorities...maybe that's the only way to protect him
Well Walter also says that his mother made a comment about them moving. Maybe that's why they moved too... Because the old school was on to them.
@@AxiomAmnesia I forgot about that part
I think the teacher gave the paper to Walter to burn as a way of empowerment. The boy was not able to stand up to the monster before but now he could finally feel like he defeated the monster with his own hands after so much abuse.
Walter said he wanted to burn the monster to the teacher in the classroom during recess. He had to take responsibility of his recovery from the trauma he endured.
It’s deeper than what was shown. Those cries when Walter was moaning “No”… just think. If you know, you understand.
😢
Holy shit bru
Also how at the very few times when Walter wasn’t showing up at school with any new bruises or anything or “provoking” him, but this man was going in his room every night. The signs were very obvious.
S.A.
Moaning? Crying no
Did anyone else realize that the monster is the devil.. foreshadowing Clarence Williams III at the end of the movie. Great film work👌🏽
David Alan Grier is one of my favorite comedians, but seeing him in this role was a stark mood whiplash. This and his role in Queen Sugar as an abusive ex-husband who preys on defenseless women just made me go "Wow."
Oh yeah, I forgot about him in Queen Sugar. I wanna see more of him like that. He can act in just about any role!
This is the movie that kickstarted my obsession into the paranormal. I was 6 years old. I’m 31 now and still obsessed.
Hmmm... interesting.
@@AxiomAmnesiaafter you guys finish with tales from the hood tmit would be interesting if you two did Candyman 2021
🎯 EXACTLY! This is what I thought watching this movie…. The little breadcrumbs lead you to believe that’s what’s going on, I agree!
@@AxiomAmnesia I Never Looked At Him As Being Sexual Abused Because His Abuser Just Wants To Use Him As A Punching Bag Not Molest Him.
The teacher handed Walter the paper because it's Walters perception and belief that makes the magic work.
the door symbolized his innocence being taking and safespace being evaded thats why they showed kids toys and play items as symbolising that walter wanted to be a regular kid but he was living in a nightmare trapped and unprotected since his dad was deaceased leaving him powerless and a victim
He WAS an actual Monster. He wore the skin to blend in and people don't see him as he truly is. Always know that your "shadow/ false face will always reveal who you truly are. Ask me how I know...my father was a Monster.
Damn 😢 I’m sorry u went thro that
I agree with you when spoke about how children perceive you during these acts.
@@AxiomAmnesia yup like 3 - 4 days ago. Too many times the very ppl that call them for help end up being treated like the perpetrator.

@wildboy NO ABSOLUTELY NOT!
That makes zero sense.
@@PARISGx1exactly 😂😂😂
If you look closely the silhouette of the monster on the door is the same as the devil at the end 🤔
Great point

@@petey_know_pablo Yeah She Was And She Saw Him As A Savior
This is my favorite tale in the movie because its more different from the others tales! The other stories deals with racism in other forms while this story deals with child abuse!
20:53-21:12 Most parents, abusive or not, stress to their children that what happens at home stays at home.
But, when you're in an abusive relationship, and your child is being beaten to the point of serious harm/or possibly death, that makes you just as responsible as your mate who is doing the abusing.
The teacher got no hands so he should've called the cops. Mans came in and got washed lol 😂😂😂
What I really enjoyed is how the director used the Hood in the title to lure movie goers to watch a in lacc of better terms a "preachy" message.
He definitely couldn’t read the room. And then he couldn’t fight
There really is sooo much going on in this tale! Thanks so much for supporting the channel! 😊
The 🐐 Brandon Hammond. You were the black kid I wanted to be growing up . I've seen all your movies but this one ^^^right here you did that brother. I saw Soul Food wit my dad in Baltimore it was sold out 2 seats left me and dad sat on the 2nd row...good movie much love
34:46 the police NEVER get anywhere in a hurry. Especially to a black household. The state of North Carolina just approved not having a permit for a firearm. I will just have to keep one on me.
Y’all had me researching lol. I did learn that this story was based loosely on Rusty’s childhood.
I believe that the teacher gave Walter the paper to burn because it was him and his mother who was tormented by the monster. Not the teacher. Walter has to destroy the monster to end the cycle of abuse and it could also help the mother and son move on without an actual mental break.
I experienced this in real life my Step-dad was that monster I was that boy then. He's R.I.P now! That's why I love Tales in the 'Hood 1!
Forget that That stepdad was a damn abusive demon masquerading as a person who eased they way into walter and his mom life
That tattoo represents how his dad went to prison and got out not the same thats why he said he is dead cause he fills like dad died in prison
The real supernatural thing is that he's got a white shirt on and bloodying up everyone, but not a drop has hit that shirt.
Have yall ever heard the devil rides you when your sleep? That's what was going on with Walter, only in this movie the devil was beating on him
did u notice that the shadow of the monster is similar to that of Sim's devil form. I noticed that in subsequent viewings after the first time seeing this. always thought that was a case of forshadowing
I was just saying that to another commenter!
Unfortunately, Walter was definitely being sexually assaulted in that movie. In the scene where the camera was outside of the window you can hear the “monster” growling while Walter is saying “ow, stop, ow ow stop” 😢 if you’ve been through such traumatic experiences as a child, rather it’s real life or portrayed on tv, you just know
When she stepped on the paper, the blood spatter came from his mouth. Watch the overhead shot when she stepped on it
Weak bones. It's crazy because I didn't think of the SA that Walter could be going through. But it made sense that if the monster felt untouchable, it would do whatever it wanted.
In real life, David Grier is an actual martial artist, that's why he moved so well, lol.
I don’t think the mom didn’t believe him. I think she was just scared because she was abused as well. She knew what it was.
Another thing for him reading the room is her putting on a sweater over her dress when he came home.

Never considered Walter was being molested. But it makes perfect sense. It makes me wonder if Rusty Cundief wrote this story to represent his own childhood trauma... "weak bones"
He beat that teachers ass to horror music 39:15.
All this could have been avoided if Walter would have just crumbled the picture of Carl once he saw .
Didn't he see what he did to Tyrone? I'm sure that news went all over the school.
I would have crumbled that picture with the quickness. Saved everyone an ass whooping.
I think that since the "monster" was the source of the son's fear, he had to be the one to burn the paper in order for ot to work.
RIP Clarence Williams III and he played in "Purple Rain" as Prince's father.

That's the thing. It's not a mortuary. It was hell. Perception and reality.... Remember...!!!
Good breakdown! Did y’all notice that Walter’s teacher (Rusty Cundieff) and his mother (Paula Jai White) were both in “Sprung” together? 😊
FYI...teachers in many states are mandated reporters. If we suspect abuse, we must report it.
Would you have stepped on the paper too?
I can never understand how a parent can ignore children's concerns & when they are afraid.
Weak Bones!!💙💯💙 Another great breakdown!
Can you pleaseee do Sugar Hill👀lol
Thanks so much! Sugar Hill is on the radar!
IJS
It was fun seeing David Alan Grier in this role..he's usually a funny good hearted goofy character..but an abusive asshole it totally worked...great actor.
While he was in a twisted pile he was still holding on to the cast iron skillet. 😂😂😂😂😂
