If you want some help for another reactos run, feel free to drop by in mattermost or our unofficial discord server, we can give you a hand in working around certain quirks. Also, if you look out for another machine, its useful if it has a serial port, so we can do some debugging on what exactly causes the issues, making it easier to fix them.
And you mentioned btrfs, just for correction, it is not a ntfs replacement, it is a different filesystem coming from the linux world and the reasons it was added was because the snapshop feature will make it easier to restore a broken install on hardware in the future and also helps the driver porter analysing issues. reactos has ntfs support, but not for setup and by default only read-only, but experimental write support can be enabled.
Great and Fair video btw :)

Would that be the 'ReactOS Community' server? I joined there, as I'm the lead dev on an old gaming suite that uses DX8 and I am curious to discover if our software runs, and if it can be made to run, now. We tried a while back, with no luck.

If I remember correctly ReactOS worked pretty good on my old Optiplex 755 a few years back. And that system has a Radeon HD 4000 series card I believe (forgot which exact model tho). I don't remember trying any games on the system. But thought I should mention it anyway. I do not remember having any install issues, it just installed and ran as far as I remember. Sorry I could not give any more information. I think I didn't stick with it because it failed to run something, and I can not remember what that was. Sorry.

Thanks for going through this ordeal! For some reason, both the developers and almost everyone making videos on it tests them only in VirtualBox, which gives the false impression that it is somewhat usable, at least for some ten minutes. I have been following the development of ReactOS since around 2003, and I feel that with the popularity of virtualisation, its hardware support has even gotten worse. I think, very little development effort goes into making it work with real hardware, because Virtualbox can always give you the convenient illusion that it is somewhat usable. And yet, whether or not it runs on real hardware is what matters in the end.
If you think about it: Development has started around 1996 (by the name of FreeWin95), so it is 24 years now that they are working on it. Compare its state to what Linux had achieved after 24 years of development to put things into perspective. I think it is a lost cause.

the difference between then and now is the lack of manpower and the incident of the leaked source code which delayed the development. Nowadays, there are actually people working on this. Looking at the change logs, blog posts and contributors, you can see that most of the action just started in 2017.

Btrfs is not ReactOS equivalent to NTFS. Btrfs comes from the Linux realm (although not often used) and is a different file system than the more traditional ones (FAT, NTFS, Ext4, XFS etc.), more suited to servers or other data-critical applications and a sort of more open implementation of ZFS (another file system usually used in BSD, available in Linux, but restricted due to licensing). It seems weird that ReactOS is trying to implement it.
I've heard that ReactOS works with the WINE project (at least on some basic level, using its libraries), so if you feel adventurous you might as well test retro gaming on Linux using WINE on a perhaps newer machine. Just in that case don't forget to run WINE in 32-bit mode using an environment variable (there is a FAQ on winehq.org) for higher success rates (and/or try PlayOnLinux, winetricks, Lutris, CrossOver etc). But I'm sure it isn't better than using dedicated hardware from appropriate era with the OS games were designed to run on.

    • @jochannan7379
      @jochannan7379 4 года назад +4

Most of ReactOS' userland is from WINE. Without WINE they wouldn't have gotten anywhere, I believe. As a rule of thumb, what doesn't run in WINE, doesn't run in ReactOS - which kind of defeats its purpose.
As for BTRFS, yes it is a Linux file system, but thanks to winbtrfs, there is decent support for it in the Windows world, so this may be a good choice, if they just can't figure how to make NTFS work.

Things like the mouse issue as well as the SATA/IDE incompatibilities is something they could easily implement in the install procedure as some sort of help text before installing.

I thought maybe they just call their ntfs btrfs like you said in the video, but it seems to be actual btrfs as we know it from Linux. Now btrfs is pretty buggy itself, at least when it comes to RAID setups, but if you're working with only one drive it's a great fs.

I think this is also a result of wrong choices made. Back when Linus Thorvalds started coding Linux, there were no virtual machines, so from the get go he had to make sure that his kernel worked on real hardware. The result was something absolutely rock-solid.
Back when I first tested reactos 0.1 in 2003, it was a pure command line OS, but it actually ran on my PC. Now, the devs don't even seem to bother anymore about real hardware, because everyone is using VirtualBox anyway. Instead they focus on polishing the UI and adding features in order to have something to present. I have the impression that they go for the low-hanging fruit instead of taking on the more difficult and dauting task of improving basic stability and hardware compatibility.

@@AlejandroRodolfoMendez Sure, that's the theory, but in practice, drivers very often don't install. With my Thinkpad T420, a device you would expect to be relatively well supported because it is fairly old and widespread, I have tried the snappy driver installer which is recommended by the ReactOS wiki reactos.org/wiki/Install_a_driver#3rd-party_Driver_Packs and the success was very mixed. One essential would have been e.g. to get Wifi working. Wasn't possible. I also tried on some other legacy machines, including a Dell Latitude E6420 and a Fujitsu Esprimo desktop, all dated standard hardware. I don't know how much work is involved in making sure that 3rd party drivers can install, but clearly that work hasn't been completed, and there seems to be limited attention to this task.

The signal you're seeing has been through a KVM, and a VGA splitter, then it's sent 10 feet across the room to a VGA to HDMI adapter, and is then fed into an upscaler that converts it to 1080p, and finally it gets sent to my portable capture card where it's recorded. Then in post, I squish the footage back to a 4:3 aspect ratio, and do color correction to compensate for the upscaler, which like to screw with the brightness and color balance.

What is the point of continuing development at this point? This is someone's hobby project that has gone on too long... like that 67 Mustang your uncle keeps on blocks in his garage, swearing he'll get it restored some day. Yes it's cool to look at, and certainly has historical significance. Every now and then he buys a new parts, or cranks up the engine, or changes the fluids, but the whole family knows that it will NEVER be in drive-able shape. @@NazmusLabs ... only if the machine on which you install it had windows 7 or 10 installed in the past.
I am not aware of Microsoft turning their flagship product into a free-for-all. This would have been headline news.
BTW, I recently did install Windows 10 without a license key on a new machine and did complain about being unlicensed.

Johannes Rohr what you are talking about is licensed Win7 & 8 pcs that gets a free upgrade to Win10 & activates. I am NOT talking about that. If you build a new PC that never had any OS before, you can install win10 on it without a product key and use it indefinitely without the OS ever expiring. Yes you will get a watermark on the desktop telling you to activate but that’s it. No annoying popups or time limits.
How about rather than arguing with me, you do your research. Look it up. It takes two minutes.

Theme Lubuntu to Windows 2000. Many retro windows games work great with Lutris + Wine out of the box. Many other games have been ported over on Steam. Pick up an old ex-Office i5 slap in an Nvidia 1050 and away u go.

ReactOS will never amount to anything. Nobody wants to swap to an inferior Windows copy that has stability miles worse than Windows.
    Just use Linux with wine.
