Thanks for the oil change video. Not too long and detailed. My 2017 Tacoma warranty has expired and I'm now doing my own preventive maintenance. I brought a K&N filter but I decided to take it back and use a Toyota filter, at least on this oil change. I have always tightened the drain plug just snug with a tool and the filter I always tightened hand tight and maybe 1/8 or 1/4 of a turn with the tool. When I was 16 (49 years ago) I really tightened the oil filter on my cold 1967 Ford Fairlane and my dad had to take it off in pieces a few months later.
Thank you for making a video changing the oil on your tacoma without lifting it on jack stands. I've always been afraid of going under cars or trucks with Jack stands or those things you drive up on. Now I know I can change my oil on my 2017 Tacoma SR5 V6 without lifting it. I appreciate the video.
I have a piece of cardboard from a large box I always use when I have to do an oil change in the driveway. Saves having to worry about the inevitable splash spots, and latex Gorilla gloves.
Great vid - appreciate u being to the point and providing relavant info. Also liked the fact that u point out importance of draining with vehicle level. 👍 Thx for posting.
Mike you should get either a 6 or a 9 inch extension for that 3/8 ratchet. then you wont get the interference from the frame when removing and installing the filter.. Thx for the video.
Excellent video, thanks. After you've done the oil change you can go to your screen in the dash and click the right arrow until you get to settings, then scroll down to find maintenance reset and click on it and then click on yes to reset your oil change reminder.
Looks like you're doing a pretty good job. You just need to make sure the teeth on your oil filter cap wrench are fully engaged with the tabs on your oil filter cap. 5:35 - 5:45 The drainplug on the oil filter cap should only be tightened to 10 ft.lbs. The oil filter cap = 18 ft.lbs.
At least the filter and housing are a good design in these trucks. On the pentastar 3.6 Chrysler engines, they always crack when over tightening/Loosening the cap. When I changed my friends 16’ Tacoma his oil filter housing was on so stinking tight. It was a dealership oil change. That was 7k miles ago. I noticed the oil was very dark and stinky, also had some pourable thick sludgy components which I would assume is bad for cold start oil flow properties.l resulting in increased engine wear.
You should secure the bottom oring and small drain plug prior to install.....then fill the oil filter with as much as oil as you can then put it back on.....that way you don't start your truck with a dry oil filter
Question for during the draining process, when I stuck the plastic part in barely any oil came out. Usually when I’ve done it in the past a lot comes out. Could I have done something incorrect?
Just bought a Tacoma and watched this video on the oil change. Wow what a bummer that Toyota designed it this way. My 4th gen 4 runner oil change is 100% tool less and takes 10 min max lol.
Something to watch out for is DON'T over tighten your oil filter canister. It is a common problem with the Toyota oil filter canisters and can be a real pain in the butt!
I noticed you have on a nice T Shirt of sweat shirt when you did the oil change! I can never stay clean enough doing an OC with those canister oil filters. Great Video by the way.
You did not line up oil cup wrench on proper position, there is 4 cut off for a reason... You did not remove safety clip on right side of filter box. For plastic cup and aluminum plug should use special torque/
Great vid! Do you know if the oil canister is torqued or is it hand tighten when reinstalling? Also, is the canister tool Toyota specific or universal?
Not sure if there is a proper torque spec but I've been fine just tighter than hand-tight. I believe the tool is Toyota specific since I needed a different one for my Audi - some brands might be the same though
What size ratchet, 1/4 or 3/8? Also, can I put 5 quarts 0W-20W, then top off with 10W-30, all Mobil 1? I have 3 6-quart cases in my garage that I bought at Cosco.
I'm planning on getting a 2020 trd off road this fall and I always do my own maint. This process looks pretty straight forward, but that filter configuration does seem a bit over-engineered. Why not just a spin on filter? I assume it's to reduce waste.
Thanks for the vids! I've a '17 TRD OR and is it just me, or is this the worst engine oil dipstick ever? It's extra long and by the time it wanders up, down and around the access tube there is no such thing as an accurate reading. Have you noticed this?
YES, worst dipstick ever. Sometimes it looks like its low and the next time it looks too high. I can dip it 6 times and still can't tell where the level is. I've even scored up the end hoping it would show better. Thinking about drilling some little holes in it or maybe more dimples.
Hey Mike; I was searching youtube looking for tires for my 18' Tacoma Access cab. Eventually I came across your video and started recognizing the area you are from. Discount tire is who I usually deal with and noticed Lowes in the background. Wow that looks like the same as my Discount tire store, but the kicker was seeing your truck at Elk Meadow school. Gee I live like 2 miles from there in Deschutes Rive Woods. Small world man!! So....about my truck. Its a 2 door, so there is slightly more rake. I dont have a leveling kit, and was wondering if there would be any rubbing up front. Ive seen alot of posts saying 32 inch tires would . The Goodyears are 31.7. Antway I just had to write you considering the tires and close location. Kinda blew my mind. Nice truck by the way!! ~Ken
Hi Neighbor! Sounds like your truck is a 2nd gen if you've got a regular cab. I'm fairly certain you can fit a 265/75/r16 no problem without a leveling kit (as long as its 4wd) given that these will fit a 3rd gen without any lift kit.
@@DrivenCompanion Oh, sorry I wasn't clear. It has the suicide rear doors and a 6 foot bed. Glad to hear that the Goodyears would fit. I was going to go with BFG KO s, but had a few people tell me they would run. I really don't want to go with a level or lift. Thanks for your reply. See you around!
Mike thanks for the video. At 3:19 I see a clip near or attached to the oil filter housing. Did you have to do anything with the clip or does the wrench move the clip to loosen or tighten. Thank you.
This is an outstanding video; thanks for posting it. I had a 2007 Tacoma, and changing the oil was quick, simple, and offered little opportunity to screw things up. Not so the third generation 2019. The process is overly complicated. While that in itself is a pain, the real problem with complicated procedures is the increased possibility of errors. Don’t try to rush this job; remember Murphy’s law. As a side note, I wonder how many people have lost a tooth or two when the steel skid plate came banging down on their face; perhaps they merely suffered a broken nose (I experienced neither, but it’s a new truck, with many more oil changes yet to come).
You can measure the oil level with the dipstick. If the dipstick is dry or below the minimum threshold then there isn't enough. Add slowly so you don't overfill.

People: "OMG this is hard and more work!"
Jocko Willink: "Good."

You did a great job showing step by step. I don't like the new design to change your oil. I have a 2006 and taking the filter off is super easy.
You should secure the bottom oring and small drain plug prior to install.....then fill the oil filter with as much as oil as you can then put it back on.....that way you don't start your truck with a dry oil filter

the oil filter cover CRACKED
was the first oil change and had to buy a new one, ridiculous
My 2001 blazer had a door use a flat head. Door opens and filter is accessible.
I hated working on my s10, that access door seemed like the only thing the engineers did to make life suck a little less.
Just bought a Tacoma and watched this video on the oil change. Wow what a bummer that Toyota designed it this way. My 4th gen 4 runner oil change is 100% tool less and takes 10 min max lol.
Totally agree with you!
Can't beat that oil filter at the top, I miss that

Great presentation! Best part, close up of where things go. Thanks.
Whats the average price before tax for doing this oil change? dealership here wants $110 to do the oil changes.
I noticed you have on a nice T Shirt of sweat shirt when you did the oil change! I can never stay clean enough doing an OC with those canister oil filters. Great Video by the way.
Thanks!
The spin-on filters are canister filters. This is a cartridge system where only the cartridge/ element is replaced (+ o-rings).
You did not line up oil cup wrench on proper position, there is 4 cut off for a reason... You did not remove safety clip on right side of filter box.

Oops. Sorry, Bro. I thought I was commenting on the silly ad. Nice job changing the oil!

Rick Ashmore No 10w-30!!! You can alternate between 5w-20 and 0w-20 but 0w-20 is best
Use the10w-30 in your lawn mower. Especially if it's not synthetic. Or use it just to top off a little between changes especially in warmer months.
Nothing cleans a clean car better!
How about resetting the computer?
Good Question. Check this out: ruclips.net/video/aOLRdZdJpMA/видео.html

I'd prefer that too but it's still fairly easy
To make people give up and go to the dealer for service 😆

Yes, I'm not a fan either. But I do prefer it to the electronic "dipstick" in my Audi
YES, worst dipstick ever. Sometimes it looks like its low and the next time it looks too high. I can dip it 6 times and still can't tell where the level is. I've even scored up the end hoping it would show better. Thinking about drilling some little holes in it or maybe more dimples.
just get some sandpaper to grind some of the dipstick metal this way oil will stick to it and easier to read
Thanks for the help bucko took me an hr and a half
Great job on your video.

WHYYY Toyota did you do this to me. OMG :( The previous gen filter sits right on top...
The oil on the o-rings is to prevent binding when tightening
GREAT VIDEO MAN
Hi, where did you purchase the oil filter adapter?
You should be able to find one at most auto parts stores. Thats where I got mine
$5 on ebay
Got mine from Amazon...works great.
Great video thank you
Mike thanks for the video. At 3:19 I see a clip near or attached to the oil filter housing. Did you have to do anything with the clip or does the wrench move the clip to loosen or tighten. Thank you.
Roger, its been a little while but I don't recall doing anything with that clip. Pretty sure you can just leave it as-is
Thank you! Badass video
Yea at home right now changing oil. You working?
18 foot lbs for canister. 30 foot pounds for drain plug
Good video but why can't Toyota come up to the state of the art and use a simple can filter? What a primitive ridiculous fiasco!
Thank you for the wonderful video
I love my 2nd taco super ez to a oil change filter on top of the engine. But this is good info if I buy a 3rd gen
Oil filters on top are nice. I loved that on my Crosstrek

That’s crazy Tacoma I thought it was just a regular oil filter it’s harder then my Mercedes oil change .
Might want to invest in some rubbly gloves and eye protection.
How do u know if it's low oil?

Great vid. Thanks.
Very well done
Great tutorial. thanks.
Muy buen video, gracias !!
Very good!
USE AMSOIL
DO NOT REMOVE THE SKID PLATE IF YOU HAVE THE TRD.
Has anyone usee 5w20?
☝️🙏😁🇵🇷👉👍
Advice: always wear eye protection
And gloves to protect from the used oil.
