- Want to replace the stick in the Neo Geo Arcade Stick Pro with a better one? The mod is actually really easy BUT only if you have the right cable. I couldn't find a ready made cable here in Japan so let's try making one!

I have to give SNK a lot of credit for how forward thinking they made this. With the ability to replace parts and swap in higher quality parts. So even if you wear out or break a stick or button you can replace it instead of buying a new unit.
I’ve just watched this video again and I can tell your work will never break, having thicker cables how you did will be way more secure in time because nothing will move, everything will stay solid as a rock. You can relax and even hit hard your stick without stress!!!
Unbelievable that this 4 year old video is still relevant. Not only the Arcade Stick Pro but also the buttons and balls are still available. Thanks again for this informative video!
As reference for anyone who cares but doesn't know: the original Neo Geo cabinets used a Seimitsu LS 40, so if you want it to have that feel now you know which stick to buy.
Of course, this applies only to the japanese cabs, the american ones used battops, iirc they felt like happs or something like that, which sadly don't fit on this stick.
does the ls 40 fit as well?
@@dbnpoldermans4120 The LS-40 on FocusAttack has both the PCB type and the four plugs type with basically the same mounting plate as the LS-56 which was shown by Scarlet Sprites to be able to mount on the arcade stick. The four plug type would be easier to use the same connections as the base joystick so it would be an easier mod.

I love my LS-40, it's a great all-around stick! (fighting games, shmups, arcade games) Been using it for a while in my previously JLF-modded SF IV Arcade Fightstick, and I'm never going back!

They sell 5-pin Sanwa cables all over Amazon in the US. I had to get a 5-pack when I did, and I totally don't even mind (cheap)
They're even cheaper on Focus Attack. $4.

Yeah, but the mounting holes in the case are for a JLF mounting plate, so you need to get a universal plate if you wanna use that.
Using seimitsu joystick is way easier thanks to 4 switches being individuals, so you can just plug the legacy cable to the joystick

i took my NES apart to fix... it now has 2 screws holding it together (out of 6) and i think they may be screws from inside the machine. I swear i had it organized but then knocked my tray over and bye bye screws.

@@NihongoGamer The joysticks with the 0.187 terminals are a PAIN to wire and figure out.
You're almost certainly better off doing it the way you did for the future. Most joystick levers for home controllers are plug-and-play drop in with their own PCB (with soldered in microswitches) for convenience.
If you EVER decide to install another joystick in that case, you can reuse that plug in harness as it is. It installs identically with the Hori Hayabusa lever (if you can figure out a way to install a Hori lever in that case; you might have to cut plastic which would make it VERY inconvenient; I don't see how a the Hayabusa mounting plate would fit in without severe modifications) or the -01 PCB versions of the LS-32, -40, -56, etc. The only difference with the Seimitsu joysticks is that you FLIP the harness head adapter before plugging it in.

If you wanna keep it as close as possible, you're gonna need a dremel. Focus Attack has a much easier plexi solution that also lets you put artwork inside.
Just got my neo geo stick in today, I'm actually really happy with the stick, if I could find a way to dampen the plastic echo inside the unit, but thats a small gripe.
For those that want to do the mod, this is more or less the "long" way of going about it. The reason he crimped the cables individually was because he couldn't find the correct one that's pre-made on both sides readily available.
If you shop online, you can find the right cable that has both sides of the cables already pre-done and all you would have to do is plug in both sides and you're done.
Can you tell us the part number of this cable so we can search for it?

I've swapped a stock stick and buttons on a venom arcade Stick with Sanwa parts years before by myself and use this stick till now...
Btw the black circle dust protection that came with the Sanwa one should be on top of the case and can replace insteaf of the white one if desired. Otherwise are you expecting double dust protection? Otherwise it could even cause problems later and your stick is slightly shorter in depth where it comes out of the case.

Sengoku has two branches. The arcade button parts are in Radio Depaato and the some JST connectors and cables are only available at the other branch about 5 minutes down the road next to kotobukiya

Seimitsu LS-32 or LS-40 is your best bet, since those Neo-Geo fighting games use those joysticks for higher level of execution...
Which plate will work in the Neo Geo ASP using the Seimitsu LS-32? I am thinking about using it, but only know of the MS Flat Plate fitting properly.

Japanese tools are so good... You can directly see the quality just by watching it... Very very well made, it's a simple tool but trust me the quality looks very very good.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about Japanese culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in America where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over in Japan, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.
What this means is the japanese public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase SNK software for any system, nor will they purchase any further games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but SNK has alienated an entire market with this move.
SNK, publicly apologize and cancel the Mohammed bin Salman’s foundation acquisition or you can kiss your business goodbye.
Dude I switched out the spring for a 4 lb spring. It cost like 6 bucks for 2 of them. Maybe less.. But it made the difference.I wonder if they sell 6 to 8 lb springs. It was a cheap and very effective mod. I recommend you try it out on your channel Mr. Nihongo gamer ;)

I plan on changing the buttons and ball top on my ng asp, but I've never modded a stick before because I've been intimidated due to not wanting to mess up an expensive piece of hardware. How do the wires come off on the buttons? Can I just carefully pull them off then re-insert them?

Hi. I just got one of these and I had a question about modifying. Would I need to purchase an encoder if I wanted to change the buttons and the joystick to LED?
Don't know much about LEDs but generally I think you do need a separate led controller for that
Hey so you can actually do a direct swap to a Korean lever like the Crown 309MJ or FJ without even needing a new wire, cuz you can just pull the 8 quick disconnect terminals off of the original lever switches! You could also swap in any Seimitsu lever that uses the same connection style (with 8 individual microswitch terminals, not the PCB 5 pin connector).
But the Sanwa JLF uses a 5 pin JST-XH 2.54mm connector, and the original lever uses a 5pin JST-PH 2.0mm connector..
So you'd need to find a premade 5 pin JST-XH to PH wire to do a plug n play JLF swap.
Or you can get the same JLF wire he used in the video, but instead just crimp some .187" spade terminals onto the 5 bare wires and connect them directly to the original microswitch quick disconnects.

I wonder if you could get away with buying some female-to-female Dupont cables off eBay. Just means you don't need to buy special connectors or make cables yourself, you just need to connect the wires and close up the stick. I've not tried it, but maybe someone else can confirm if it will fit?
What sizes screws did you use to mount the new joy stick? I'd have a heart atack if I strip the holes.
Update: I measured the hole for the arcade stick mount plate. Standard is (⅛w)x (¼d)in. Metric is 3.1x 6.3mm. I ordered a couple different screw types on Amazon. It's hard to find an exact screw type that may fit so I'll let you know what works out. Wish me luck. Thanks NG.

Using a Sanwa JLF for KOF is a very bad idea. For games like Street Fighter where circles, half circles and quarter circles are the priority, it is perfect, but once you try a fast paced fighting game like KOF and start doing things like hyper hops, super jumps, running forward, back dash and many other things that require a short throw distance and higher tension, a JLF literally becomes the biggest nightmare ever (unless you use a custom oversized actuator and a "heavier" spring, of course). I had to learn this the hard way.
I’ll give other sticks a try! Might be a good opportunity since I’m not super familiar with short hops yet

I also noticed you started with KOF 2002, I would recommend that you give the proper ones a try first, like 97, 98, 99 and 2K, since those ones were made by the real SNK, so you will enjoy KOF and Neo-Geo in general at its best (best graphics, best art, best story, best voice acting, outstanding OST, etc). 94, 95 & 96 are also amazing, but the combo system was not polished enough back then in my opinion.

Don't think so, western levers and buttons are made for big machines and usually don't fit on sticks because they are too big, and this one is pretty thin.

BTW, all you need to do is use a small drill bit to ream the holes out on the connector to accommodate the thicker wire.

I recall a WoolieVS arcade stick video where he had a mechanism that allowed for a detachable joystick for when putting in a backpack. Not perfect, but ideal in the right situations.

You could just do the Phreakmods Link joystick shaft mod to make the stick much slimmer and easier to slide into a backpack. Basically the same as what comes with the Victrix fightstick.

The insulation makes zero difference. Squeezing them was the correct move. If you want to use "thinner" wires, just buy a double sided adapter harness and plug it in. But you won't need to. If you want to get nuts you can solder it straight to the pins and use shrink wrap.

I caught wind that the software got hacked to play more games but CPS3 runs like poo. So no Third Strike or Jojo. But as I see it, if you can't plug this stick into a PS4 then you probably will be able to soon.

honestly i am surpirsed you bothered finding a connecting head that sized and not just use single pin housings for each wire. also just look up pin housings they are 100+pcs variety packs online for less than a tenner. single pin housings allows you to re-wire(both ends if need be) as needed if you swap sticks alot.
Would single pin housings still fit in the white plastic pin box on the PCB?
They are typically only slightly larger than the crimp connector about the same-ish clearance when you placed the wires in alone for the test fit so i would say yes the only downside is that they are friction fit so a minor pull will unplug them but by just estimating from the video the pins housings would be butting right up each other. but would have plenty of clearance form the board's clip.
I’ll def keep it in mind as an option for future mods
