Anafiotika - Plaka | In the heart of ancient Athens 🇬🇷
The Anafiotika district is located in the shadow of the Acropolis and was created in the middle of the 19th century, when workers from Anafi settled in the area, who had come to Athens to work as builders in the reconstruction of the city and the construction of Otto's palaces. They originally lived in the area of ​​Zoodochou Pigi on Akadimias Street, where the state had allocated some small plots for them to settle as a family and permanently.
Soon, however, the prices of plots and houses rose too much and as these workers had no intention of moving somewhere far away, they decided to settle illegally in the Holy Rock. The first settlers are a carpenter (G. Damigos) and a mason (M. Sigalas) from Anafi. They transported to Vrachos the building materials with the necessary secrecy required by the circumstances and in just one night with collective work set up the first two houses of the district.A few days later, some Athenians from Rizokastro noticed the arbitrary buildings and called for Urban Planning, but until the person in charge was identified and the example of the two acted properly, other Anafiotes followed, with the result that the houses multiplied, with the authorities not taking any drastic measure.
Most of Anafiotika was built mainly during the period of the expulsion of Otto and the Middle Kingdom.
The district was built following the architecture of the Cyclades. The Anafiotes restored in parallel with their installation, the two temples that were located in the area from the 17th century, the church of Agios Symeon and Agios Georgios ton Vrachon.
After the Asia Minor Catastrophe of 1922, a refugee district was built with stilts east of the Anafiotika, enriching the composition of the population. In the 1950s part of the district was demolished as part of excavations. In the 1980s, about 1/3 of the district to the walls was expropriated by the Ministry of Culture to reveal the ancient Promenade. In the following years the area together with Plaka was significantly upgraded and today only 45 houses remain which have been declared protected. The houses have an area from 8 to 36 sq.m. The inhabitants of Anafiotika in 2015 were 65 and among them there were 4 children.
The Acropolis and the surrounding archaeological site are an architectural ensemble of outstanding importance. The total area, which numbers up to a hundred monuments, is the heart of ancient Athens and covers a period of more than 3,000 years.
Anafiotika in Plaka is the neighborhood of the gods, as it is called, it looks like a trip to old Athens adorned with antiquities, historic buildings and Byzantine churches.
An excellent example of ancient architectural development, the site includes the hill of the Acropolis, its northern, southern and eastern slopes, the ancient Agora, the Roman Agora, the Library of Hadrian, the hills of Pnyx, the Areopagus (Philopas). ) and the Nymphs (of the Observatory), as well as the laboratories and the cemetery of Kerameikos.
Philosophy, democracy and political theory, theater and music were practiced and flourished in this space which, for this very reason, is considered the cradle of the fundamental aspects and values ​​of European culture.
