I sailed on this voyage with my parents and siblings we were returning to australia and it was the cheapest way home I remember playing pong for the first time ever on board and watching John Wayne cowboy in German thanks for trip down memory lane
I arrived in Australia in 1972. I believe I spent 30 days travelling from Italy to Australia. I had the time of my life. Met some lovely kids especially an older boy who was an absolute darling. Often wondered where he went.....he cried when it was time to say goodbye. That was a long time ago, hope life's been good to him. It would be lovely to get in touch again and chat....
I traveled in october 1970 on the SS Australis from Sidney on the way to Suva when fire broke out in the galley. Flames reached appr. 20 meters into the air over the funnel. My cabin 480was burnt out completely. They managed to stop the fire on a pump driven by the donkeymachine only. I just found a report in my archive of mr. G. Nicolopoulos the Chief Purser stating this issue. Fire didn't start in the afternoon but in the early night/morning. Lifeboats were lowered, nbut at the moment of embarking we got the message the fire is under controle. All passengers stayed on deck for the next days, no meals only bicuits and water. We limped to Suva, the crew throwing all burned items and rubbis over board. In Sava painting the outside of the hull. Got transfeted to P&O liner Oronsy. In Rotterdam new cabins etc. All repairs done.
This footage is nostalgic to me. I was only 16 years of age, in 1971 and remember being taken on board the ship to be shown around when it was at Port Melbourne, Australia. You've taken me back a few decades, :) Thanks for sharing .....
Hi Alan I was on that voyage as a 9 year old boy with my parents and 2 sisters, I came across a postcard we sent to my nan reminding me of the disaster that happened to the Norwegian tanker that exploded the postcard was dated 18th feb 1971 not sure if we stopped to offer assistance. Thank you for the lovely reminder.
We left England in February 1971, I think it was about Feb 15, on the SS Australis bound for Australia. I was 12 years old. We stopped at Las Palmas, Cape Town and Fremantle bound for Melbourne. Arrived in Melbourne about March 14 1971. Great film, brought back so many memories of what was for us a great big adventure. I'm sure it was the same trip. Wow thanks so much for sharing.
Grumpy Old Driver we too left stockport on that ship in 1971 at the exact same as you did sir and we too lived at 3 Altair court tullermarine. Melbourne Victoria Australia I was only 10 yrs old my parents had 6 of us children dad worked at Tullermarine airport and mum worked in a lipstick factory we emigrated over there but only lived there for 4 yrs as my parents wanted to come back to England 😢 us kids loved it over there too. Just a PITTY we had to come back here 😢
Thank you for this video. I was on this ship on the very same trip. I came out to Australia with my parents and brother at the age of three. Its funny I can remember it getting very rough and a lot of people getting very sick . Thanks again.
how wonderful for you Alan. Coincidence.....the SS Australis you arrived on to this great country in your video, THEN motored around to Sydney from Melb where my parents got on and steamed off for their world holiday ! They left Sydney on the SS Australis on 16 March 1971 at 4:30pm. The captains of the SS Australis were Capt Ikiadis and Capt Tourvas. I just showed my mother (now 92) your video and she said "WHAT memories !"
Thanks for sharing this with us. There can't be much footage of her floating around, so it's a real treat to see this. When I was 8, my family and brother and young sister sold up in Glasgow and went on the same route but to NZ (April 24th 1977 to June), except we went Perth, Melbourne and Sydney, before going on to Auckland. We had emigrated, but came back after 2 years, mainly due to mum's homesickness for her large family back home. Flew back that time. Will never forget it though! Just joined a couple of Facebook sites yesterday, and have been enjoying the photos. I even saw myself and my mum in someone else's photo in a large crowd on deck. How amazing is that!
My first husband and myself came out to Australia on this ship in l971 to Sydney we left in July and arrived in September oh the memories watching this clip..thanks..
My wife and I sailed from Auckland on SS Australis northbound October 1970. We were fortunate enough to survive the fire on board and assisted other passengers and crew during emergency. Have previously written an article of our experience during the voyage.
I was on that voyage as. 9 yr old from nz . The fire was fairly serious ( happened between Auckland and Suva) but luckily the crew got in under control after a long anxious wait. Australis spent a week in Suva being repaired
Fantastic footage! I wish I was around to have been on the Australis and cruised around the world on her, she was a very beautiful ship with rich history.
That's some beautiful footage there, Alan. Great work converting it over and letting us see it. They call that style of colour grading INSTAGRAM now, ha ha! Very popular. That must have been an amazing jaunt across the oceans!
At a time where the only way to cross was by ship, when ships looked like ships and not gigantic apartment blocks, at a time when designs just looked better
I came to Australia on the Australia in early 1971. Arrived in Sydney in May 1971. I enjoyed my 23rd birthday on board with a bomb Alaska and birthday card. I had a marriage proposal and 2 other broken hearts furing the voyage. I met the man of my dreams in Sydney a little later in 1971 - 72.
I went to Australia leaving around 15th September 1973, arriving mid October in Sydney. Had a few hours on Grand Canaria, a day in Cape Town (on a Sunday and it was shut), spent a day in Perth and Melbourne before arriving in Sydney. The Queen opened Sydney Opera House the day before and our ship was diverted to Woollomolloo dock instead of Circular Quay. Fantastic experience.
We left Southampton in October 1977 bound for Melbourne, my wife Linda and our then 2 children Angela and Robert. Cabin 106 just below the Promenade deck, 4 portholes double bed and bunks for the kids!
it was 16/09/1977 - I was 9 in the July, the silver jubilee and the death of Elvis. many, many memories; Heraklion, middle East, the equator, soursob (pretty dark haired stewardess) I don't know why she got the nickname - she was beautiful to me; she would always find me or my Green lantern leather bag id been given by a Greek mama In the little leather bag shop half way up on the right hand side in the main street of Heraklion, she'd find the abandoned handbag - then eventually she'd find me. When I was finally home i ran off that gangplank . I was born in Oz then we went back to UK with P & O in 71 - thank god we came back again in 77 / 16th sept-Oct 1977
monroe3004 I was on Australis from Melbourne Jan 5 1972 to Rotterdam, as a twenty year old single guy and also in one of the only two 8 berth cabins on the ship. I was a travel agent in NZ in 1971 and had access to all the cabin plans of all of the ships in those days. I remember Hitch-hiking to Auckland and saw the Australis at her berth in Jan 1971. You must have been on the next outward bound voyage.

I arrived in Fremantle on the 5th of May 1973 ...On the stop on Capetown we nearly got arrested for talking to the young girl working in a Restaurant ...I will never forget those days of South African Apartheid ,where there only for one day ,but the experience never to forget .
