Once you start testing the device could you just try to transfer an shr1 or shr2 Raid from an intel basted box like that 918+ to the 1621+ by just putting the drives from one box to the other? I assume it will work but it might be an interesting test to do. Thanks in advance.

Can the M.2 VNMe slots only be used with Synology drives? Or can you use other brands? Synology supported drives max out at 800Gb but others go up to 2TB.

Should note expansion bays cannot be the part of the main pool each eSATA port has to have its own storage pool and cannot be merged with the main storage pool same apples to the other eSATA Port if two expansion bays are attached each eSATA has to have its own pool

been watching the videos, althought, i dont need the 6 bays. I have been considering qnap as well 453D. My question for those out there. Is it better to get this bad boy or the 453. I do like the 2.5 port on the qnap. But, i am concerned with the usability of the software for these Nas's. Is the 1621+ better also than the 920+ ? thanks for your help.

A question on using NAS in an earthquake prone area. Apart from using Hard drives with built-in shock / vibration protection (say WD Red Pro), does the synology shell itself deal with anything protection with regards to shocks?

Hi NASCompares , would it be possible to add a low power GPU so PLEX could hardware transcode and VM's could take advantage?

Netgear Readynas also has hybrid raid for last 11 years (they brand if as X-raid, by default at first power on with empty disks installed it automatically creates single raid1-5-6 depending on how many disks are installed and raid5-6 is hybrid so you can mix different size disks)
Main confusion over X-raid is in its naming as makes people this think it's a raid type when it just a branding name like Beyond Raid and Synology hybrid raid (SHR) is,, X-raid fully fully automates everything so the user doesn't need to know how it works, it's automatic hybrid raid level and and use mixed disks, auto self repair on disk replacement and auto expand on larger disk installed/replaced no user action is required (unless the disk has a filesystem on it then you need to format it, if you do it via the readynas panel soon as it's formatted it will use it within 10 seconds)
apps is quite lacking on readynas thought (but supports basic stuff like Plex, btrfs + integrity and File backup and snapshot Replication backup {ReadyDr} and cloud backup)

im considering to buy 1921+ as a roon core. does anyone tested 1921+ running with roon?

    • @asdf51501
      @asdf51501 3 года назад

I had to look up what roon was. It appears to be a multi-room zone manager software package. I have a hifi stereo component that has this functionality, but I'm not using it. Reason: The Sonos speakers whoever built the house installed don't actually sound that great, and the only other hifi components connected to this thing are a 400 disc cd changer and an AM/FM tuner (yes, as an actual separate component, like right from 1988). Instead, I'm using two separate HomePod pairs, a HomePod Mini pair in the master bedroom, my office, and the media room. The main living room has a Bose Soundwave 30 I bought years ago that has great sound and I can connect to it via bluetooth. So all that Cat5e and coax gets to be abandoned in favor of newer tech. To avoid wifi congestion, I plan to run Cat6a to the two rooms that have 4K tvs (I have gig internet) and to my g/f's office so she can connect if the wifi is out. Necessary for the ol' work from home vpn. My own lab stuff will be all wired in a separate vlan (2 gaming PCs, one 3950x and one 5900x, one Threadripper 32 core PC for server and virtualization tasks (maybe in the future go Epyc on this).

HELLO NasCompares you mentioned that only Synology and Drobo that you know of has
fluid RAID where you can mix different size HDDs. You have reviewed Netgear ReadyNas
how could you missed that? Not sure but probably they invented fluid or dynamic RAID.
Theirs is called XRAID and XRAID 2. My ReadyNAS is over 10 years old running 24/7 4bay
with built in power supply. I love you brow I watch you for a long time please improve
you audio make it a little louder and stop preaching about external PSUs. I hate them!
The only advantage is as you have said easier replacement and you will need that cause
the primitive plugs will have connection problem before the external PSU will burn out
that is why I twist tie the cords so they wont move. I Never gonna buy a nas with external
PSU and it should be industry standard to be forbidden. Heat and vibration is not a
problem either with internal PSU they've figured that out already. Otherwise you're one
of the best and I'm shopping for a new NAS. I still can't decide between QNAP or Synology.
If QNAP would have dynamic RAID like Netgear's ReadyNAS XRAID and XRAID 2 or like Synology's
SHR I would buy it in a heart beat! Keep on doing brother what you're doing. I need to know
the latest 2020 QNAP/Synology desktop or rackmount. No external PSU on desktop and I need to
run everything! I want to replace my pc with nas virtualization etc...ANY IDEAS PLEASE?
I want to Run everything, plex, cameras, website, mail server virtualization running windows/Ubuntu.

    • @asdf51501

If I wanted my NAS to manage virtualization, surveillance station, and other things all at the same time, I'd definitely prefer a 6 or 8 core cpu of some sort. Probably a lower-end Xeon. They probably chose based on cost along with cooling requirements and some minimum performance spec they wanted.
