This is fantastic video thanks and my comment is not on the video, but on my experience having owned a TS-h973AX. My unit failed within 2 years. The reseller messed up and 'lost' my repaired drive and couldn't source me a new unit. QNAP frankly did not care about my warranty. They were completely fine with the way the reseller dealt with the issue. So anyone buying a QNAP unit, beware. Your warranty with QNAP is useless and cannot be enforced.

I am not that tech-savvy so I will go with Synology, thank you for your help!

Thanks for the video. I'm looking to replace my old QNAP TS-469L (7 years, no issues) and considering the TS-h973AX. I am also looking at Synology solutions because they seem to be much more popular. Since I have historically backed the losing side (Construx vs Lego, Atari Lynx vs Sega GameGear, Zune vs iPod) I do try to figure out why other products are more popular. I'm looking forward to the software video you mention, especially the Plex performance. Since the Ryzen V1500B does not have integrated graphics, I didn't have high hopes. Thanks again.

The hardware on the Qnap is better, but the Synology software is much better, if you are a home or SMB user, just go with Synology, just make sure they have a 10GB LAN like this unit. You can get 10GB on Qnap cheaper, but if you can afford Synology is a much better solution overall.

Mind explaining how its better? I'm honestly asking, is it more stable, less resource intensive, easier to use, etc...
I've been using a QNAP for 7 years and its been mostly set and forget, apart from occasional firmware updates. I am toying with the idea of picking up a cheap Synology so I can play around with the software to see what the fuss is about, before investing more significant funds in replacing my current NAS. Thanks.

@@AnthonyMartocello I have both systems for years, none of them fail me so far, but took me a lot of more hours and hassle to learn the Qnap OS, and with the years only got worst, we just get lost in all those pop ups and software layers of programs that some times do the same thing. Don't get me wrong, my both NAS the Qnap and Synology have been really reliable, however, for home users or SMB will be much much easier to configure, maintain and operate a Stnology OS than a Qnap OS. Even for some one that comes from a Qnap OS, the same will not happen if is the other way around. Just try it and you will see it. The only reason that I see to go for Qnap in 2020 is because the 10GB LAN solutions are cheaper, but for those who can afford 10GB LAN on Synology, they should go for it.

@@pbrigham Thanks for taking the time to reply. I cannot say I recall having much trouble with the Qnap OS, but I will certainly take a closer look at Synology. Thanks again.

@@pbrigham Based on the fact that after 4 years I ended up with a £850 brick that Synology refused to service in any way, even if it did die due to the Intel Atom C2000 bug, I doubt that I will ever go back to them. Basically they sold a time-bomb as these boxes will all die. I may understand that they may get out replacement parts but in that case they should have provided a meaningful discount to upgrade to something new without a bug. Apple did replaced the main board on a laptop 3 times, and two times it was far over the normal warranty expired, just because that was a proven manufacturing defect. Any company that does refuse to take ownership of their past mistakes, is not to be trusted.

@@ssbarnea I can vouch for the longevity of Synology products as I have 4 units, 2 of which are 10 years old without any problems (DS411+ and 1511+). I am looking to replace one right now and I am certainly looking first at the Synology DS1821+ for a Plex dedicated NAS to replace the 1511+ and give the current backup and file storage options to the 1511+. I do not mix applications in my NAS and also have one running Surveillance Station with 11 cameras without a hiccup. The fourth is in my boat also doing surveillance - and that is a harsh environment again just perfect. Their software is extremely user friendly and perfect for a casual techno like me.

Hi thanks for all of your great videos. I ve got 2 questions:
    1. can these devices both operated vertically and
    2. as the qnap uses zfs what ist the best strategy of equipping this device with storage, more smaller hd or only a few hd with larger capacity? The target is to be more flexible for upgrading in capacity over the time ?
    Thanks and merry Christmas.

Does the QNAP really come with non-ECC memory? I thought they both come with ECC memory, albeit Synology with DDR4-2400MHz SO-DIMM UDIMMs while QNAP with DDR4-2666MHz ones... or am I mistaken?
The 4x1GbE with port trunking still means on a per client connection basis the limit remains at approx. 100MB/s, while QNAP's use of 2x2.5GbE allows for 250MB/s single client limit with port trunking or nearly 1GB/s when connecting through the 10GbE port... That's more useful in more cases, as even with managed switches and port trunking a single connection gets limited to the speed of a single component port... And the 10GbE+ ports can allow using the shared storage resources to be used as a remotely mounted drive of quite acceptable latency/speeds. How are the NVRing limits on these devices?
Are there differences in terms of free/max-allowed camera sources?
QNAP's Qtiering on slow/cold storage tier with any redundancy forces redundancy applied on all the other tiers, so you're getting 1x disk usable space and 2x disks at least required for either of the SSD slots (warm tier for SATA devices and hot tier for NVMe devices). Of course when using only for caches the situation is typical in terms of adding SSDs requirements. I'd love someone to check what ZFS level caches are being implemented and how/where - are the "caches" only ARC or ZIL or both but one per U.2 SSD? Or maybe the cache'ing is taken from earlier non-ZFS solution stack and so is similar to Synology implementation? I also heard that QNAP may be somewhat impacted by which tier is created first - supposedly it may be slower when you're starting from HDD cold tier and provide SSD tier at a later date/time as in such a case it will write to that cold storage first... On the other hand, Synology only allows for cache'ing thus lets adding the M.2s one by one with either RO/readcache or RW/writethrough options...

Hey buddy, can you help us out..
We had the qnap 1:04 arrive today, mainly setup but we have hit an issue..
Do you know if the Sabrent rocket M2 NVMe 2tb will work on drive 6 and 7? We have two spare..
If so, do you know what enclosure we need?
Keep up the great work.. way out of our depth as we create music, but living the videos.
    Keep lucky!

Hi bud. You'll need the QNAP QDA-U2MP m.2 NVMe to U.2 adapter (it can hold 2x NVMes) to install those Sabrents in the 973AX. That said, there are plenty of other 3rd party ones out there. Hope that helps bud

Hello I’m looking to upgrade from a WD PR4100 I use primarily for Plex and storage of photos and backups of my Apple Computers. Which one of these would be a good replacement? And would they also be considered upgrades. I’m sorry I’m a newbie, when I bought my NAS IT WAS THE LATEST AND GREATEST A COUPLE YEARS AGO.

Why? It is more easy to replace, does not generate heat inside the Box.... I agree, its not the best for a rack.
