  • Join me on my first real winter bushcraft wild camp where the temperature dropped to -4oc. With the help go my new bushcraft kit, including my gransfors bruh Scandinavian forest axe and my silky bigboy. I was able to construct a raised bed which helped so much to keep me warm through the night.
    Hope you enjoy the video
    All the best!

    There's a saying "be bold, start cold" you should have set off on your hike from the car with less layers on to avoid sweating. Rather than having to sit and wait to climatise you really have to manage your layers taking then on and off as needed. I know it's a faff but it's the best way. Good video, keep em coming

    • @OUTDOORALLY
      @OUTDOORALLY 2 года назад +6

      We had a similar ethos in the army , only put a layer on if your really really feeling it .Because once all your layers are on , if your still cold you stay cold unless your moving or have an external heat source.

      @pennsyltuckyreb9800 2 года назад +2

      Yep. It could be 20° F and I'll still hump out with just a long sleeve shirt on. I get hot and sweaty quick.
      What I add to my system is a 100% wool "patoo" they wear in places like Afghanistan/Pakistan/Nepal. Only 2lbs and thin but tight weave and very warm. I'll just have the long sleeve shirt and then wrap my head, face, neck, and upper shoulders while I walk so if I do sweat, it's wool and it'll breathe and wick away moisture or I can simply quickly adjust it more open or less open as I go depending on how the Temps change. More efficient and comfortable than an overcoat, IMO. I have my actual winter jacket strapped to the pack and usually only wear it once I'm still for awhile or at camp.
      It doubles as added insulation and cover inside your sleeping bag if you have one. Put it over the outside of the bag if you're rolling with a fire.

    Good on you for getting out there and getting uncomfortable.
    I split many, many cords of wood all year 'round when I was a kid, for my home wood heater and for some family. One tip that makes things easier is to read the wood before you chop it. Most of the time, you can find a slight crack in it to target but as you mentioned, you have to keep knots in mind. The cracks won't steer you wrong though and they go around the knots.
    Too many people only go out when the weather's nice so they don't really ever learn all they need to survive. For the feet, I've spent way too many nights freezing my toes so I always bring a pair of large merino wool socks and a pair of puffy booties. They pack down fairly small but they'll keep your feet absolutely toasty warm. One of the reasons people's feet get cold is because they're sweaty and wet from hiking around so changing into sleeping socks is a must. Another is that boots and tight socks cut off the circulation to your feet so they'll not be able to warm themselves.
    I'm not as good with accents as I used to be but I'd guess Black Country? Wolverhampton area maybe? I'm prolly off though but I'd be curious to know how close that is from your area.
