    Nice variation of our palak or methi dal...
    I.would add some garlic and ginger along with oniona. Asding thw chilli poqder and turmeric powder after tomatoes are alomost cookes will help prevwnt burning as the juice of tomatoes would suffice. Your method is fine too.
    Finally I would add a dash of lemon juice once the dal is done.
    All these are small additions / changes which enhance both flavour and taste.
