      It treated the audience like they had some intelligence. Like ridiculous "love" scenes. Once, simply smoking let you know what happened. I'm not saying I love lack of personal expression, I don't! In the same vein, it's usually how a director chose to convey an action that ends up being the scenes you'll enjoy most and give it flair, artistically 😸

      Agree. I think this may actually be her best performance. She's obviously good in Mildred Pierce, but she doesn't suit the role as perfectly as she does this one. Her line delivery is smart and cutting, and the way she flips back and forth between speaking on the phone to her suitors with a low, velvety seductive voice and sniping at other women in the room with her shows she really integrated the lines and performs them as second nature. That doesn't come through in roles in which she plays a more fragile person, such as Mildred and Baby Jane.

It also stars Delores Gray , Ann Miller, Ann Sheridan & Agnes Moorhead( Endora from Bewitch). @@kcirtapelyk6060 I agree 100 percent, I actually like Joan's acting much better because as you said she was more natural. I honestly dont think the reason why Bette didnt give Joan the credit she deserved as a great actress, is because Bette knew she was a great actress, and I think that was Bette's hidden insecurity and mental manipulation to put that out there about Joan, so people would see her as the superior actress......Bette knew Joan was great and without any of the technical training that Bette had, and thats what really had Bette bothered

      @@TahariBlue Later on in life, Bette did admit that she respected Joan’s professionalism and that she wasn’t the worst actor she ever worked with(that position belongs to Faye Dunaway). She even felt sorry for her when her daughters book got published and her reputation destroyed.

      @alexisdiva9 Год назад +1

      Am glad Bette did that - a shame she didn't say that when Joan was living and could have appreciated that praise, but of course Bette wouldn't have given her that satisfaction. The irony was that Joan admired Faye Dunaway who ended up playing her in "Mommie Dearest".

    In ever scene she is in-- Mary Boland's performance just draws the camera and the audience towards her....while she doesn't really 'steal' the scene; she Dominate's it, until her lines are performed-- than, the camera can relinquish her, but the eyes still look-out for her physical and silent antics. A great treasure of acting ability.

      I saw a clip of her guesting on a comedy show where she slapped the host (obviously part of the act). He asked why she did it and she smiled into the camera and said "Don't you know? I have to do that in every movie "

      Most women of the time were quite content relying on men for money and security, and didn’t want to go to work hard labor all day, or get blown to bits in world war 2. Women loved masculinity in men and were happy being feminine. The suffragettes were mostly happily married heterosexual women who loved their hardworking husbands and just wanted to vote and have equal legal rights. Sadly butch, man hating feminists highjacked the movement, and now modern day women call selling booty pics for $5 on onlyfans “empowering” while screaming they don’t need a man, while MEN pay their bills! Not much has changed. It does beg the question, if a man is going to pay your bills, isn’t it better to be loved by him rather then just sell your body for nothing online? And if you view men of this time period in the same anti male modern way we all like to view women, you could even say “these poor oppressed men, forced to work long grueling hours for a woman at home and forced by women to be traditionally masculine work horses and risk their lives for others ” 😂 Funny how it’s NEVER ever sold to us that way.

    It’s nice, but I still prefer Auntie Em’s “Almira, for years I’ve wanted to tell you exactly what I thought of you but, well, as a good Christian woman, I can’t.” I think Joan Blondell delivered a similar line in a Busby Berkeley Film “What shall I do?” “Sweetheart, as long as there’s a sidewalk you’ll have a living”.
