I'm more proud of this video than the one I did before. This one was more difficult for me to edit, but I like how some parts turns out. I can spot some mistakes and I simply didn't corrected them because, as I said, it was a difficult video to edit and I didn't want to start it from the beggining all over again.
Unfair comments about Jessica Lange. Truth be told - no one could really play Joan Crawford - Lange's acting is good. The side-by-side confirms it.
She stinks.. No one can play Crawford.
No, she is an amazing actress, it's just that they are both openly avoiding to imitate Joan and Bette, they don't want to be like the drag queens who impersonate Joan and Bette.
Gordon Hall Faye dunaway
the one bullshit
dunaway's performance is regarded as a caricature and rightly so
Jessica and Susan rocked it. The reaction from Susan playing Bette as she lost was Oscar worthy in itself.
Modern Hollywood has NOTHING on old Hollywood. Shady as fuck!
Yeah, you hear about these minor 'feuds' between celebs, like J.Lo & Mariah or Kanye West & Taylor Swift, but that's small potatoes compared to Bette & Joan.
Nothing has changed. We just won't hear how bad it is until they make a movie about 40 years later.
Jon Lanier, of course, things have changed. For one, expansions in mass communication technology (i.e., Internet et al) have made it near impossible for celebs to keep secrets, in this day and age.
True. For all we know we could hear stories about how Emma Stone and Jennifer Laurence had a bitter feud similar or worse than Joan and Bette's.
Old Hollywood bred and knowingly supported child abuse on a wide spread. It was highly common and suppressed by the paid media then.
So, yeah, Modern Hollywood has nothing on beating children like Old Hollywood did. Bravo?
Joan had such a deep voice. She was a handsome woman.
Of the one billion or some women in the world, I don't think any... even one... would like to be called handsome.
A Krenwinkle
Some people say “that man is beautiful” so....
@@akrenwinkle Maybe not. But she did have masculine features. Also, boys can be called "pretty boy" if they have a baby face etc. I'm not insulting Joan; she wasn't pretty, but her features were good and solid. Like a man. So, she's handsome.
@@NickeyONickes I never actually weighed in on Joan's appearance. All I said was that there isn't a woman in existence who would like to be described as handsome.
@@akrenwinkle Probably not, no. I'm not disagreeing with you. They all want to be called pretty or beautiful.
This is amazing! thank you ! loving the show soo much , the costumes , the sets , the attention to detail , and of course the acting!
I'm a sucker for Old Hollywood and I really enjoyed watching Feud. Thanks for making this video!
Remarkable! This is the absolute key moment in the whole series...and kudos to Ryan Murphy for such a shining production and Jessica Lange and Susan Sarandon for pulling it off with such incredible accuracy down to the mannerisms. And Donizete Junior--brilliant editing on your part providing the comparisons! Thank you so much!!
This is so cool - thanks for posting. It's striking, because watching the TV show - while I completely adore Jessica Lange and think she is one of the greatest actresses of our time - the fact that she is a few years older than Ms. Crawford was at this period has made me think that her at times somewhat haggard appearance does a certain injustice to Ms. Crawford. But seeing them side by side, she actually looks YOUNGER than Crawford! It is clear that she is 'acting,' while Ms. Crawford is just speaking, but it is a movie (television show) after all, and acting is what she's being paid to do. Brava!
Davis came closest to winning her third Oscar for All About Eve (1950), but because she split votes with costar Ann Baxter, she lost to Judy Holliday. It's still considered a huge upset since All About Eve won Best Picture, and certainly wouldn't have been the success it was without Davis's enormous contribution.
1962 had a very strong list of nominees, but if Bancroft hadn't won the rumor was that Katharine Hepburn had it in the bag - giving what many critics deemed her best performance to date in Long Days Journey into Night. Davis is a hoot in Baby Jane, but the competition was just too stiff. Crawford's acceptance for Bancroft was very malicious indeed.
Malicious in what way. You sound like poor, bitter Bette. And Gloria Swanson was worlds better than Davis - no clipped speech, pop eyes or cigarette.
Im so surprised that they did not win any awards. Susan and Jessica were amazing.
these comparisons are excellent! thank you!!!
Jessica Lange Emmy now for portraying Joan Crawford Wowowee 🙋
Joyce Hobson Nicole Kidman says hi :)
Jessica Lange did a fantastic job playing Joan Crawford. If any of you criticizing Jessica’s look and her acting, think you could have done better, then maybe you should show us all how it’s done!
The looks and everything is identical
Such an amazing series, im thrilled by it
Jessica's version of Joan is softer than the real deal
Have watched every episode...excellent !!....I love the Golden age of Hollywood and its history...a lot of this I already knew....
The great detail this show has!
I LOVED Feud!! The acting was superb!!!
In my opinion Jessica Lang embodied The Joan Crowford character I couldn't tell the difference and just a side note Joan Crawford is a character Lucille Lusure is who she really was
Acting is not mimicking. The greatness of Lange here is all in her conveying Joan Crawford without parroting her. That is acting. Inhabiting the role.
Joan always held her head as if she really were royalty
These two actress are now legends. Jessica and Susan already are. Jessica Lange is one of the best, reigning with Meryl and rare others. Playing a true character not means be the perfect prototype and perfect twin. The career of actor is : acting like it is real, but adapt and give your own energy, your own personality, your own soul and art.
Great show, magnificent and talented actresses /goddesses, impressive director.
I've watched this series 9 times through....what does that say? It's amazing!!!!!!!
JESSICA ...One of the greatest and fabulous living actresses. She's a monster beauty, intelligence and talent
these are awesome!!
Susan as Bette Jessica as Joan was great but Faye Dunaway brought Joan to life like no one else ever will or could.
It is true that no one can beat Joan Crawford. However, Jessica Lange did a nice job recreating her.
Don't care about her personal life...none of us are perfect. Joan was sooooooo regal and had such an aura about her. Bette is one of the greatest actors of all time but Joan was/is still the epitome of the glamorous movie star.
The shade of it all
Susan Sarandon is 70 and she looks much better than Davis (who was 54 in that time).
Renan C. Maia what ??? She’s 70 ?! Are you FUCKING KIDDING ME
maybe Jessica Lange isn't the best choice for potraying Joan Crawford but Lange makes best effort when potraying Crawford in Feud. She's not mimicking, she shows how vulnerable and strong Joan Crawford in every scene. Weell worth for Emmy's this year
Bette Lange doesn't have the same fierceness that Crawford has. Lange's voice and expressions are sweet in the contrary.
Do the "Straight Jacket" trailers...
I'm doing it. ♥
I love how Joan set up the scenario to accept the award for Anne Bancroft. So just in case Betty didn't win it was a great way to stick it to Betty where it hurts.
She did a fantastic job as Joan. Not sure what all the belly aching is about, but Jessica Lange killed it! I wish she had played Joan in Mommie Dearest rather than Faye Dunaway.
Only thing I don't like about Lange's portrayal of Joan is the voice and some of the mannerisms. Lange adds a strange southern twang to Joan's character. I don't know if it's intentional or not, but she sounds too much like Constance/Fiona from AHS. The real Joan was also very graceful and poised. Lange makes her more sloppy. IMO, the best portrayal of Joan was Faye Dunaway, even though Mommie Dearest got horrible ratings.
FerrariCarr Are you KarlVillalobos?
brennon musso What?
FerrariCarr someone on goldderby with that username commented the exact same thing word for word as you did here at about the same time so I assumed you were the same person.
brennon musso That's really weird. Link?

Does anyone know the name of the song played for " The Miracle Worker" please?
Unfortunately I think that Sarandon is much better as Bette Davis
Crawford really got her revenge on Bette with all the photos that were taken after - as she appears with the three winners from the other categories - clearly giving the impression that they were all Oscar winners that night.
Jessica is a Goddess!
Crawford looks great here.
Jessica Lange only knows how to act in one way. The Jessica Lange way. I liked her on AHS. I thought she was a brilliant actor but in Feud I don't see her as Joan Crawford, I see her as Jessica Lange. The acting, demeanour, the breathless dialogue delivery is all Jessica Lange. She hasn't even captured the essence of Joan Crawford as is very apparent in this video. Agree to disagree but she has failed miserably in Fued. Susan Sarandon on the other hand has done a much better job as Bette Davis. Of course she can't compare with the legend that was Bette Davis but I somewhat see glimpses of Bette in Susan's portrayal of Bette which is sadly not the case with Jessica.
to me she's not even trying, lulu. LOL
I did not see Joan Crawford anywhere Jessica Lange's performace, until the 5th episode ("And the winner is..."); some magic operated then and for the first time I could see Lange not being her old self, but something closer to Crawford.
From what I gather, it's not that she is doing a mimicry of Crawford, but inhabiting a character. No, she is not like her in appearance or mannerisms, but neither was Natalie Portman as Jackie O. However I always saw Sarandon as Davis. The eyes.
i love Miss Lange since AHS but i have to agree with u! :(
ukxxsal why are people comparing the wonderful actresses Susan and Jessica? There's no need to compare any more than there is any need for the actresses to look like or imitate the original ones. It works as a piece of art and as entertainment and that's what matters to me.
The only criticism I have is for the direction. I wish the mini-series would had timed the scenes to match the live broadcast down to the second.
Jessica Lang didn’t look a damn thing like Joan Crawford, but my God she was Joan Crawford. The mannerisms, the audacity, and the sheer grace we’re all there
Jessica is just to old and shaky to play vibrant and young looking joan
Cunty Jackpot Jessica looks better in her 60s than Joan did in her mid 50s . Bette Davis in her late 50s was younger than Susan now in 60s
joan was old here too....
Cunty Jackpot Sure she was! Late 50s.
Not as much as Lange is now. I think she's some 15-17 years older now than the part.
I don't see anyone "young" in this video.
love it !
Jessica Lange is the best thing about this show.
The best chapter
BRAVO
When will this be on Netflix tho?
Wow @ 1:24 notice how Jessica Lange got the hand movement just right. Joan held out her hand palm up then twisted it to match the gentlemen's then quickly switched back again. I wouldn't have bothered to do all that and just stuck my hand out like a log lol.
Joan Crawford was basically the xenomorph queen from Aliens.
Look at Sarandon's face after she (as B.D.) loses the Oscar. It's exactly like one of Bette Davis's emotional reactions and facial expressions. I don't understand why they gave her that hair color, though. Bette was dark blonde, not chestnut brown.
And Bette remained bitter about that for almost thirty years until her death. That's a long time to hold a grudge. And she already had two damn Oscars.
this sort of rivalry gave them both a reason to live.
She should've won at least 4
@@carlamartinezvega13 touché!
I really do like Jessica Lange, but she always comes across as a bit tipsy to me in everything I've seen her in. That includes movies and interviews. Has anyone seen the movie "Losing Isaiah"? Her performance in that movie is a perfect example of what I mean.
Susan Sarandon is amazingly till beautiful. how is that possible for a woman of 70? I believe its bc she is comfortable and excepting of her age,it doesn't phase her the list bit.
Lange is AMAZING
Jesus holy fuck! I can't believe that people can say a bad word about Jessica's acting. First, I understand what people is saying- Jessica really does love to play an extreme emotional and depressed character, but somehow she always manage to bring humanity to the character, which is very hard. Second, playing a real-life character is not about sound or look like he/she ( it matters on a certain level) but to capture the spirit and the personality of the character. To be honest, Faye Dunaway's performance in mommie dearest is way too dramatic. Faye's voice and facial expression are way too overdone. And finally, what the hell?! Who gives a fuck about your opinion when Miss Lange has already won 2 oscars, 5 golden globes, 3 emmys, 1 Sag and 1 Tony, who gives a fuck about your opinion on her acting?! She is truly a legend people!!!
a shame that the person handing her the envelop was not named Barbara
Sean Nessman I love you!!!
Jessica didn't mimic Joan, she inhabited the essence of who she was, which is so much better in my opinion. Same for Susan. Jessica made Joan human again, which was desperately needed. She was a deeply flawed person who had a kind and generous side as well.
@Lunar tears they literally said same for Susan…
this a thousand times this
Mi Abuelito was a Carpenter for M-G-M and he always spoke of how kind Joan Crawford was to a Mexican man who spoke very little Inglès but ALWAYS made efforts to speak to him in his native language: she was a Magnificent woman who treated people with Love & KINDNESS-no matter their station in life.
Because of Miss Crawford he was buried in the 1st Motion Picture Workers Cemetery in the early 60’s, when many from other countries were NOT due to prejudice.
Thank You 🙏🏽 Joan Crawford for honoring mi Abuelito!!
Yes.
Bette Lange doesn't have the same fierceness that Crawford has. Lange's voice and expressions are sweet in the contrary.
Lots of negative comments here, I actually thought she did an excellent job playing Joan, and all the little details are amazing! The hair, dress, accessories, wow! This was over fifty years ago.
LaShawn Watkins I agree with you
LaShawn Watkins hair and accessories are not acting.
That's right. And they weren't the ones who had to LIVE WITH JOAN. They have no idea what she was REALLY like at home. Only the children know.
robynsegg - only the children ... and Mamacita. If only *she'd* written a book! :)
I thought she was brilliant too, because she was. They both did a beautiful job portraying those crazy rascals, they were a mess omg 😂
The only part I didn't like was the way it all came to the end, it was very bittersweet sad. But most of all the rest of this series had me cracking UP!
Yeah Lange isn't a replica of Joan Crawford. But she brings her own brilliant grace to the role.
We weren’t looking for her “own brilliant grace”.. we were looking for Joan Crawford
Great job playing a legend without turning her into a caricature. Crawford was unique, Lange is amazing
That look of utter joy on Crawford's face when Davis lost... ice cold!
Both Lange and Sarandon capture the essence of these Hollywood legends. So great! I'm already watching repeats!!!
Agreed.
You are too easy. This was horrible acting at it's worst.
Me too
That’s exactly what it is! They’re not trying to parody them or do an impression like something off of SNL, they’re portraying their essence.
Well said!
@@wadecatt9543 try playing two of the greatest actresses of all time who had their own style and charisma. let's see just how well you will do.
I saw this Feud movie several times. It is very well done, I absolutely love it. Jessica did a fabulous job. She's a great and talented actress. I've seen her in Francis, Grey Gardens, etc. she nails it every time.
I'm glad they did the side-by-side. Jessica Lange did as good a job as anyone can do, but sometimes there's just no imitating the original. My biggest complaints are that Jessica is 11 years older than Joan was at the time of this video, so she simply looks and sounds older. Also, Joan had a somewhat deeper, more relaxed and demure speaking voice. Jessica played her with a high-pitched, shrill tone throughout most of the series.
I'm pretty much in agreement here. I keep seeing these "so many negative comments, I'm disappointed" but all I see scrolling is "Jessica Lange is amazing!" and nothing else. I liked Feud initially but on closer examination it just falls apart. Its good but could have been great - and pointing that out does not in and of itself amount to "hate"
Why are people hating on Jessica? She's just an actress playing a role. It's not that deep.
ShadesOfArmani The moaners in here should GTFO anf look for a Lypsinka performance of Joan if they want a caricature so fucking much.
Joan's energy was much more masculine. Lange has softened her I think out of empathy.
I think Jessica has done a wonderful job of bringing light and shade to Joan. There are moments in the show where that 'tough bitch' persona absolutely shines through ("Fuck you, Marty") and then there are times where she allows Joan's vulnerability take the spotlight. Joan was a complicated woman but she was not a cold hard bitch the entire time, I think Jessica softened her to bring the humanity of her to the audience.
I mean considering she beat her children, I don't think Joan was a good role model, in hindsight.
MrMalibupj Actually Joan was more poised
Yeah, her voice was darkened from all of the smoking and drinking throughout the years. The thing I don't understand about Joan is why she changed her looks...? In the 30's and early 40's she was a beautiful woman...the eyebrows and shoulder pads are atrocious.
Her designer thought exaggerating her naturally large shoulders would de-emphasize them - creating the illusion of small girl in large clothing. The eyebrows were an abused makeup trend at the time. Those brows are drawn on 14 yr old bloggers now. Joan was always butch and grew even more so in her middle years.
MrMalibupj Yeah, Umm I don't think Crawford would have been given the status as great sex symbol and glamour Queen during her younger years against the likes of Garbo, Dietrich, and Norma Shearer if the studio's and public considered her "masculine..."
Catherine Zeta as Olivia... 100% miscast. Olivia was jumpy, she smiled quite a lot, and had plenty of facial expressions. Catherine looks like she's playing Catherine... on sleeping pills. Do these actresses really study the people they're portraying?
I agree.......Zeta-Jones seems to be actually purrring, instead of speaking in a confidant, smooth, and refined manner like Olivia.
Pedro Rigual Iove Catherine but Carla Gugino would have been great as Olivia
I can't see Catherine playing Olivia I can actually see her portraying Greer Garson instead.
James Jones I actually think she would have been great playing Vivian Leigh or an older Ava Gardner.
Pedro Rigual Catherine Zeta-Jones has zero talent, which explains why her career is dead in the water. all she ever had was pretty hair and a stunning face. I don't know why she's even still in Hollywood anymore. She should be one of those relics whose career died after the 90s ended.
Fued has been great! I look forward to Sunday night. Just like I did in the 70's and 80"s before ABC Sunday night movies!
vikings844 absolutely hunni !!!
Rae Vak Movie of the week! Long list, my favorites were James Bond
You must be deaf. Lange clearly doesn't even remotely sound anything like Crawford, as demonstrated in this video. Nor does she act like her either. She's a good actress, but was miscast in this part.
+DDumbrille Ryan Murphy likes Jessica Lange.
Lots of people like her. That doesn't make her right for the part.
Okay, but can we talk about the performances from the minor characters? Stellar all around. They did their homework.
All spot on
Love the evil smile on Joan's face when she's walking down the aisle lol.
I'm enjoying Lange's work tremendously. She may not look or sound exactly like Crawford but she's capturing her vulnerability and spirit beautifully. Bravo!
I wish the producers of the show had tried to be more authentic in their Joan Crawford appearance. Joan never had her hair black after the early WW2 days. Her hair in the 1950s and 1960s was a blondish red. At this time in her life she was wearing heavy highlights and wore elaborate hairstyles. Joan always wore the finest and best of clothes, hats, purses, and shoes and her accessories were legendary. I personally do not like Jessica Lange's Joan Crawford. The worst thing is her voice is nothing like Joan who had a deep cultured often whispery voice like Jackie Kennedy when she was performing. Joan was a commanding presence and filled a room when she entered. In Jessica's defense, Joan is an almost hard act to follow.
Fun fact: Jessica Lange herself was nominated alongside Anne Bancroft and Geraldine Page for Best Actress in 1986 Oscars, which was another Bancroft/Page competition with Page ended up winning
⚠ WARNING ⚠ : LOTS of salty qweans are commenting on this video.

Thank you for the side by side comparison
I'm enjoying the campy feud. Joan Crawford and Bette Davis were both remarkable. Each of them had amazing careers. And I suspect both were ultimately sad individuals, however fascinating. JC's childhood and background was strait out of Dickens. That she became what she became and sustained as long as she did is a triumph; regardless of how she got there. As far as her acting, she did do good work and wasn't just a movie star. Mildred Pierce, A Woman's Face, Possessed, Sudden Fear, The Women, Humoresque - all strong performances. Studied; driven, pure determination & will drove her skill sets to improve especially in the 40's. Bette, was a very talented stage actress who transitioned to film. A great talent less interested in the being the Star on the surface, yet very much the Star in her real life. Lange is good and Sarandon is good. Neither are perfectly cast but they actually are both delivering restrained performances. Btw, for those of you who think SS has not had work done on her face, I would love to sell you some bonds i have in my drawer. It is obvious both of these actresses have had work done, albeit SSs work is very good. Enjoy the ride everyone; skip the need to compare and contrast in a way that is demeaning. Both JL and SS are brilliant. Both JC and BD were fascinating.
you are right about both actresses--they despised each other--and yet they both had a lot in common than either would cared to admit: their work/careers were all that mattered to them. they were sisters under the skin--also they were both aries--fiery and strong willed.
This is perfect thank you I love you
Jesus, why don't you just write a damn book. What a know it all and an arm chair critic who uses hideous syntax. On second thought, forget about the book.
Unbelievable. Fantastic! Joan should have been nominated. Both Bette & Joan are without a doubt legends...
It's kind of crazy for Bette to think that Joan could have influenced enough people to vote for Ann Bancroft instead of her. Bette Davis was awesome as Baby Jane, but the Academy usually leans toward roles like "Ann Sullivan" in the "Miracle Worker." *And Bancroft was amazing in that part, and just as deserving.
Jessica Lange gave an absolutely incredible performance in the show. She was firing every cannon. Incredible talent.
Lange and Sarandon are doing excellent work. However, this show has caused me to go back and watch interviews from Crawford and Davis. Neither current actress is actually that close to the originals. OK, Sarandon has similar eyes but other than that they are doing their own impressions of Crawford and Davis... that doesn't really look or sound much like them. That said, both deserve Emmys. It is VERY hard to portray an actual person because you open yourself up to this kind of comparison and you can't duplicate them.
I'm enjoying this series immensely! It's a shame that some people have become so upset with the show.... it sounds like they are going to have a heart attack! REMEMBER TO TAKE YOUR HEART PILLS YA OLD QUEENS! HA!
No offense to the legendary Jessica Lange, but Joan Crawford’s voice alone carried so much grit, class, and strength that that’s all I could pay attention to from the video.
The recreated these two scenes flawlessly and I especially loved the tracking shot through the backstage.
Awful. Don't get me wrong, I like Jessica Lange, but her acting is often terrible and no matter what the part is, she plays it exactly the same as her last.
Joan's mind really amazes me. She wanted to announce the 'Best Director' because she knew that Robert Aldrich (Baby Janes's director who ate Joan's due and put Bette on the film forward compared to Joan. He gave Bette more screen time and shined her) isn't nominated. She read the nominations so happily like reminding everyone that Robert isn't one of them and lef the stage holding hand with that year's director winner. And... Best Actress. "Ms. Cr... Ms. Bancroft said.." I mean, her mind. What an elite way to remind whole world to she deserved that year and what a great way to piss Bette Davis. She manipulated Oscar, Bette and Robert in her smart way. God, I adore this woman.
Catherine Zeta Jones next role will be playing ..Catherine Zeta Jones.
...In Madame Tussauds' museum.
this show is the best show
To me what's important is that #JessicaLange and #SusanSarandon portray #JoanCrawford and #BetteDavis with enough truth to who they were in real life. Joan and Bette were(and still are)legendary icons, but they were also women fighting for to keep their careers alive. So of course nobody could ever truly look exactly like Bette and Joan, but Jessica and Susan are doing their jobs(as legends in their own right) to pay homage and celebrate Bette and Joan!!!!..
Let's face it, none of us were there on that Oscar night, before or after. We don't know what went on. So, why don't we just enjoy FEUD for what it is: entertainment. I think Jessica Lange and Susan Sarandon are brilliant in their protrayals of two legendary actresses. I can't wait to see what happens next on the series....love it, love it, love it!!
Cant deny Jessica Lange so alike as Joan Crawford... Love FEUD!
Fran Canino Very deniable.
Lange is NOTHING like Crawford. It's not even close. The whole thing is a bad joke.
Agreed. She's totally the wrong choice. Lange's voice, her eyes, are NOTHING like Crawford
If you are looking for a complete replica of Crawford, go watch her films. It's not about looking or sounding like the legend, but telling & communicating the story effectively and that is why this show is brilliant!
MrS98VAC Absurd and ridiculous. In that case they should have cast Ruth Buzzi or Salma Hayek as Crawford.
Jessica was magnificent as Joan..she should get an award for her performance
Idk wtf you people are talking about Jessica Lange plays THE FUCK out of JOAN CRAWFORD. Lange has always had that classy bitchiness down to a T and fits just perfect playing Crawford. Not to mention her outfits in the show. They slay just like Crawfords fashion did in real life. I really enjoy watching her play her. I'm really surprised to see so much fucking hate...my god.
Jessica Lange is superb actress but I just dont get Crawford from her. Crawford was 58 in 1962 and Lange here is 67,vocally they were very different, Sarandon who is same level as Lange as actress nailed Davis her way of speaking her vocal tone, even tho she is older too but Davis looked older then she actually was and she was younger than Crawford because she was never obsessed about her looks as Crawford, Dietrich and other screen legends.
Susan has THE most southern accent that Bette never had
She was just replaying her American horror story character..she was rubbish at being Joan
Crawford actually looked much older than 58 here, she looked mid 60’s at least. Very harsh
I absolutely adore these two gorgeous women. Ms. Lange did an excellent job in portraying Ms. Crawford. I believe she really understands her emotional core, past all of the Mommie Dearest stories and everything else.
Lange is in no way shape or form comparable to the real Joan Crawford. She is however actually more comparable to Bette Davis in 1952's The Star - Old and Fat!
