i think today we have a much more practical, utilitarian mindset when many people in the past seem to have valued form and aesthetics differently. very interesting to think about!
because today we can calculate everything except the impact of beauty and artistic design on the human happines and how much it improves other apects maybe even make people handle the equipment better because the diffence is u can calculate the numbers on how much that would cost probably
Very good point that often gets ignored! Soldiers morale especially coming from in their fancy weapons and armor. Good morale and intimidation factor goes a long way
This was written about by ancient Greek generals! Its been a well documented part of warfare for millennia. Moral is the single most important foundation that two opposing armies build the rest of the fight off of. Sun Tzu goes into this frequently too.
What those tips do is lower the angle of the string when drawn which, in turn, makes a smoother draw with less stacking. So the tradeoff is less power for an easier draw. With an easier draw you can increase the draw weight which then counteracts the design that has extra tip weight. Quite ingenious, actually.
Similarly, Ancient Roman writers talked about the morale effects of having the shiniest armor and the tallest helmet plumes on the battlefield. Actually, helmet plumes are a perfect example- they serve absolutely no purpose other that morale/intimidation but soldiers love them.
I might be generalizing a bit here, but it’s my impression that the same is true for war arrows from SE Asia. Usually very nice painted and colorfully decorated around the fletchings. Considering war arrows rarely are shot more than a couple of times before they are lost or broken, this is a lot of work and resources for seemingly no gain. But it is yet another way to show off your riches and boost morale.
not only was a design choice but in the past the bowstring would have gone around the knocks set in those unused pieces of wood at either end, and the bow string would have much larger loops to run past the large thin piece of wood but this led to twisting of the bow limbs and so they kept the design but lowered the knocking point of the string.
Same reason why the B2 is painted black instead of light gray, and why they still use the A10 even though the B1 does a better job at CAS lol. Litterally only for morale
Also reducing the draw strength for hunting bows vs combat bows is a thing. Pretty much every army had men who knew how to shoot bows so they could feed themselves on the march with local game.
Because of you I've bought a Comanche Indian style bow for deer hunting have bein practicing for the last month and will continue for till October wen deer season opens up and will put the compound up and give stick bows a try wonder wat your opinion and idea for the best style for hunting would be and it doesn't have to american native specific but ide like some from the period of antiquitys from around the world
good insight. just like big flamboyant hats in napoleons warfare don’t have any direct physical benefits, but do have moral benifits. fighting is often a big game of chicken, and stricking enough awe and terror until the enemy routes. Very rarely do battles end in fullsale fighting to the full death of a group of men, but when enough disorder is sewed that the formation runs away. looks are often an important piece by itself
Its called cool factor. Thinking we are much smarter or better than our ancestors is nonsense. Boys will be boys. Thanks for this little curiosity from history and have a great day 👑
Ngl, i saw the hole and my first thought was so get can hook it to something when climbing. (I don't do archery or stuff like it so that's just what first popped in my head)
He's using a Mongol bow as a stand in prop, without explaining that they're different. Khmer traditional bows don't have the string nocks in the siyahs. They either taper to a point, or have intricate (ceremonial) tips.
If you're going to talk about the Khmer Bow, maybe don't use a Mongol Bow as your prop? Failing that, maybe disguise the siyahs of the Mongol bow so you aren't confusing people.
Arrows work just as good if not better for such a case, and are more expendable. Though maybe if you ran out of arrows, but I assume they would have a small to mid sized blade on hand.
People who claim that standing armies always use the most effective and efficient (advanced) weapons have never studied basic technology, let alone military technology
My question is, how do you think a soldier would feel if he had seen one of the richest men in his fleet get taken out carrying one of the gold tipped bows?
Looking at the shape of the decoration it looks for me as if it was supposed to be hook to easily string backup string if something happened to main one. Bit that's just my guess and I have nothing to back it up
My guess is bc they worshipped Falconry, and a bow with an arrow on it resembles the shape of falcon and eagles. Then their siyah becomes the wings. And symbolizing the bow being as fast and precise as a falcon.
Maybe it's mainly a ceremonial bow. The modern khmrr bow builder claim he follow the designed found on the wall carving at the ancient temple. I dont think It's very historically accurate. Artists tend to make their statutes and wallcarving looks rather more fancy and stylish than they really were.
It's a simple concept kiddo. It's a stabbing implementation for close range combat. Imagine the morale effect when your general gets caught in a close range fight and he stabs the enemy between the ribs without having to carry another cumbersome weapon.
I don't get it....that is not it Kymer bow--it is a conventional static recurve bow with the bow string installef in the wrong place. I get that it is a prop to illustrate a point but.....?
are u sure it wasnt just strung to the nock in the siah, thats a siah that u see n middle eastern bows seems to me it would add to the leverage if you attached it to that knock it would give u a leaver
No dude Trump 100% did accept and ask for help from Russia. I don’t think it was really coordinated because Trump is not organized. Trumps campaign manager gave internal campaign polling data to Russia. That looks pretty colluding to me.
Did i seriously just hear that a military outwardly stated that efficiency wasnt its main priority? Morale is great and all, and its needed. But if you have weaponry and equipment that is not efficient, then your morale will drain. Pretty items wont fix that.. If i was given a shovel that was inefficient for digging, and i was told to dig a hole with it, i wouldn't have any morale, doesnt matter how pretty the shovel is..
Weapon skins before it was mainstream

We definitely do, and I believe it should be dialled back a smidge.
@@lemagicbaguette1917 very much agreed
Have you seen the Marine Corps silent drill? Army Tomb of the Unknown Soldier?

General: "You shouldn't spin before shooting, you'll die trying that."
Me: Yeah but, like, imagine I hit it.
No scope 360
Bow is not a Khmer bow, it is a prop with similar shape to Khmer bows from Huntingdoor the Tolui takedown bow
ITS A PROP USED BY AN ACTOR.
Very good point that often gets ignored!

How many loot boxes to get that weapon skin
Just one this is a cheap fiberglass bow modified to look like Cambodian

That’s what I said, only you did it better.

Mite as well make it for close quarters fighting, pointy things and always useful. 😉

Archers like any other Auxiliary Units, have their calling card. Putting that personal touch on War and Human Nature.
Awesome brother thank for sharing my traditional bow ❤
Also reducing the draw strength for hunting bows vs combat bows is a thing. Pretty much every army had men who knew how to shoot bows so they could feed themselves on the march with local game.
Could it just be extra length so you don't damage the main limb like the Norman bows?

I thought you were gonna say "because you can fit the string on the notch at the top there" :D

My ex and her brother were the first generation born in America from Cambodia in their family, and all of them would pronounce "khmer" as "kuh•mai"
I believe what you are saying here
Its called cool factor. Thinking we are much smarter or better than our ancestors is nonsense. Boys will be boys.
Thanks for this little curiosity from history and have a great day 👑
Actually it’s more efficient than you think and has to do with the moment arm shortening as the bow tips accelerate.
Ngl, i saw the hole and my first thought was so get can hook it to something when climbing. (I don't do archery or stuff like it so that's just what first popped in my head)
Woww I believe what you are saying here
the cuts in the wood are ment for the string.
Edit: nvm im dumb lolol.

@@Matthew_Laversyes I’m using a prop that closest resemble one that I can find . It’s not Mongolian either this one is more Javanese
I lived in SE Asia and the Naga is a highly venereated. That tip looks like a naga head.
Well you can put magic yantras there and it is a BIG deal and was a big deal back then😊

This isn’t a mongol bow it’s a cursed hybrid fused style of features that reminds me of the Southeast Asia bows
Those tips would be useful in jungles to move grass or light branches quietly out of the way also maybe useful in hand to hand combat??
Could have made the tips sharp so that if the enemy is to close they could stab them.
Arrows work just as good if not better for such a case, and are more expendable. Though maybe if you ran out of arrows, but I assume they would have a small to mid sized blade on hand.

I really like that shirt. How can I find something like that?

Damn I always thought that you tied ribbon or something in the hole in the tip to gauge wind
Nowadays, we spent $400 in silanswers and dead. String stops to do what 3 oz of wood did back then.😅
My question is, how do you think a soldier would feel if he had seen one of the richest men in his fleet get taken out carrying one of the gold tipped bows?
Personally I’d cover it in metal and sharpen it, bow bayonet
The starting weapon is the best.

I'm not gonna lie at first I thought you said they would use it for stabbing 😅
It's obviously for bonus melee damage.
😂
Can’t it be used to stop a blunt weapon at close range?
Could it be part of close quaters defense? Like a bayonette on a rifle...
Wouldn't that weight help with recoil?? It it heavy it will increase speed of recoil
No it would add mass to increase momentum
Might be they were used like a bayonet.
It's a few ounces. It's not a big deal.

Can those tip convert to other weapon form to strike or swing. That can be an emergency melee weapon right?
