Back then I was never a console elitist, and I'm still not, so with that said I'm fine with any omissions from games, technical limitations, etc., I will agree that the Genesis/Mega Drive doesn't have the perfect sound chip, but some games can sound good when done right. Funny I should mention, I prefer the Genesis version of the Zombies Ate My Neighbors OST for sounding a bit more eerie.
Dreamcast mini I would prefer. I think the Saturn would go the same way the PS1 mini went. I also prefer mega drive to SNES. I was always Sega from the master system. I skipped the Saturn and got a PS1. Then a Dreamcast after that.
I prefer the Nintendo, always did. But… the SNES mini has one downside. The proprietary controller connector. They missed a trick there not making them standard USB.
Defo my fav video yet. I as always more Nintendo so snez always wins in my world and I had both consoles. I think what let's the snez mini down I'd like to see full series of donkey kong and so on. But the excitement of Sega doing a dreamcast makes me tingle but not as much as seeing u host in that top I think you should host just a talk video going over stuff sat exactly as u was on this video lol. I would love to see shenmue 1 and 2 on dreamcast mini and also record of lodoss war defo sonic crazy taxi that's just off top of my head from the ones I loved to play. Fantastic video u looked amazing hosting it and loved the content 😊
Oh and as for the lack of LED the product is just a re-stamped Japanese mini as they didn’t have an LED on their mega drive 2 as well as the sliding power switch we had a push button power switch in PAL regions so to keep production costs down they used the same tooling
The MD mini 2 has 2 audio modes, one with clearer audio (similar to the original MD model) and a crunchier audio mode which is true to the original MD revision 2. Cool stuff
Nintendo is done with the minis for a while. I recall hearing that they only did them because the Wii U kind of flopped and they needed hot ticket items for the holidays. With the Switch doing so well, I don’t think we’ll see a mini console for a while.
Correct, they needed a filler during the transition of the Wii U and Switch and it was these Minis. Maybe when the Switch has a transition to it's successor we shall get an N64 mini.
I would like to see them release a master system mini. There has not been much love from sega’s 8 bit era in any of their collections compilations on any system (we had a couple of games in the sega ages on switch but not much else)
On the Sega side of things I would love to see a 32x mini in the form of the canceld Neptune project. Despite it's commercial failure, I enjoyed the 32x back in the day. It was the time I experienced Doom.
@@VirajKathwadia It requires next to no hardware acceleration. I had a GTX 1060 I sold for £250 when the madness happened when I last played Dragon Force...pretty sure it would run with anything though. Core wise, I haven't a clue. I probably followed some kind of tutorial, all I remember is it being infinitely easier for my tiny brain to understand rather than using Saturone or SSF.
Thinking outside the box - a game gear with either freeview or Amazon fire stick built-in as well as the games would be an interesting alternative to the original TV tuner. I would like Sega an Nintendo joining up to produce GameCube and Dreamcast minis. While different emulators would be required - I feel similar power hardware should be possible for both and this could reduce costs of the minis themselves but with different shells and hardware. So games like Shenmue, Street Fighter 3, Crazy Taxi 2 could be on the Dreamcast Mini and F Zero GX, Billy Hatcher and Super Monkey Ball on the GameCube and both including games like Sonic Adventure and Skies of Arcadia. If Wi-Fi is cheap (I think Blaze included it in the Rvercade VS) Phantasy Star Online could even be included on both-if people could play online together with the minis would be a unique selling point. And also a USB port for keyboard access and include Typing of the Dead (I can dream).
Out of these two I would say the SNES mini, but the first Mega Drive mini would beat that( Sega all the way back in the day).Would love any Sega mini, but not another Mega Drive mini . Ideally Sega could do like Atari on the new collection, release a collection with games right across the board.Master System,Arcade ,Saturn ......
I kind of love both equally (SNES Mini and Mega Drive mini!) My best friend had a SNES and my cousins had all the sega consoles! It would be awesome to see a Saturn Mini or Dreamcast. I own a Dreamcast but I never got a saturn in my collection yet, I would play it with cousin back in the day.
There are 4 turbo speed star settings on the Mega Drive super street fighter 2 by pressing right at the game start screen. Probably why it looked slower because your playing it on the zero speed star settings by default. I don't think it's slower or was released as a slower version than the snes one.
The mega drive version of Street fighter 2 turbo (special champion edition) had way more speed stars and was faster than the Snes version. Super street fighter 2 was slower than Street fighter 2 hyper fighting even in the arcades. But the 4 star speed option of SSF2 is on both the snes and mega drive version of SSF2.
The street fighter sound comparison was unfair as its well known that game sounds terrible on the Sega.. The Sega has some amazing soundtracks and they sound good on the mini. The biggest downside of the minis is the input lag. It's truly awful and if your used to real hardware it makes games unplayable
Just bought one of ebay and came yesterday. I already love it but wished it came with more games without hacking it. I also have a Mega Drive Mini 1 coming tomorrow to go with my Mini 2.
It's funny I didn't know the console wars happened in the uk also I thought it was a North America thing, I was on the sega side when I was a kid, it was the cool kid console...lol
I think comparing Street Fighter II turbo and Super Street Fighter II New Challengers is not fair. It should be the same game and you'll find New Challengers was better on Mega Drive than the SNES version. For me the Mega Drive Mini and even the Mega Drive Mini II are better than the SNES mini simply because of the sheer quantity of titles adding more value. I get pretty much all 21 SNES games are more or less bangers but when you add so much variety which Sega have with their two minis you are bound to get some titles you will not like for example I could not care less about Ecco but I know a friend who has already beaten both games already on the system, I loved the Sega Super Scalers so that was me and another friend wanted Sonic CD which I'm not too much of a fan of so you have some good varied stuff. As for Sega's next mini you may desire a Saturn or DC mini but don't hold your breath as the costs to make one for the moment are too high and not commercially viable. I strongly believe an SG1000 or Master System Mini is next as the SG1000 will celebrate it's 40th anniversary in Japan next year in June. As for an N64 mini I think thats hard as the previous Nintendo of America President Reggie mentioned they would not make one...but if they do it will be most likely as a stop gap between the switch and it's new successor.
Nice video BTW. 👍 Regarding the next mini coming out of Sega (if there is gonna be one), well don't get me wrong, but as much I love Dreamcast, Saturn is the #1 in my heart. On the other hand, Saturn is still a PITA to emulate properly these days (even with modern x86 processors), so I would bet that Dreamcast is the one that is more likely to become the next Sega mini.
...oh c'mmon^^ I own and love the the Mega Drive 2 mini but let's be honest. Common! There is really no competition between those 2 regarding the games wich are (unmoded!) on there. This is David Vs. Goliath. Really. But as the Idiot nerd I am I own all of the mini consoles besides the mini "computers" C64 and Amiga mini therefore I have the C64 maxi wich is so much more better^^
The Sega Mini 2 is better in my opinion. It has several games that have not been ported since their original releases. Some are great, others are so-so but the amount of games it offers is worth the price. The games in the Sega Mini 2 all combined fetch for a price of 3000. Most of the games in the SNES Mini have already been re-released on nintendo's Wii and Wii U virtual consoles, and are all currently on Switch Online.
I'd love to see a Saturn or Dreamcast mini, but in a few years time, I just think it would cost sega too much to make and the system would be too overpriced. I'd prefer a master system mini or a game gear mini. They were two great understated systems that desperately need some retro gaming love!
Agree. These pcbs they use for mini consoles are very underpowered so wouldn't run dream cast or saturn. They won't use more powerful boards as consumers wouldn't pay the price
I go to the Mega Drive Mini 2 as the winner over Snes mini because of best shmups like Thunder Force 4. Like I said before, SNES Classic Edition even though it have a nice games, it falls flat due to Lack of Vertical or Horizontal Shmups like Pop’n Twinbee, Gradius 3, Area 88 (UN Squadon), Darius Twin, & more. It only 2 shmups are Aerial Shooters as Star Fox. It’s Sucks because Shmups should added in snes mini so it proved to be better than Mega Drive Mini 1 & 2, but no, it never happened.
For the normal sensible person who wants nostalgia but is not a retro collector these things are irrelevant. Emulation on PC has been a thing since forever and was very accurate and free. Even then something like a RetroFreak which does many machines accurate enough though with input lag like these mini machines was a cheap choice for a decent all in one cartridge machine.
I love how you use the terms 'normal and sensible' when promoting emulation via PC which is piracy haha. Playing these devices on a HD TV via an officially licenced plug and play console that is well made and had decent emulation is something many find worthwhile (all emulation devices have a degree of input lag and these minis mentioned in the video arent game breaking). The mini's do have exclusives which are locked to their systems such as Star Fox 2 on the SNES mini and the Mega Drive mini systems have theirs too. So they do have more merit than meets the eye.
The SNES Mini really is brilliant. I spent months looking online for one when they came out. It's got great games as well. The MegaDrive Mini 2 sure looks cool though. Excellent comparison Gemma
N64 mini with F-zeroX on it would be a dream.

@@DMurcielago Because the Mega Drive mini 1 has the better lineup of games over both the Mega Drive Mini 2 and Snes mini.
