Duane Jones really humanized the character of Ben. No one could have done it better. That monologue he had where he was talking about the diner scene still gets me to this day. Rest in peace Duane. You will always be remembered. Thank you so much for doing this GrimmLife. Happy Halloween 🎃.

So true! When he describes the truck on fire racing past with dead hanging off... no need for special effects with this kind of story telling.

Romero picked him for that lead because he was the best actor of the group. Later his race became a discussion and deeper layer to the movie.

Night of the Living Dead is one of my favorite movies. But, I would argue that 1964's "The Last Man On Earth" was the real grandfather of modern zombie movies. The book, "I am Legend," (Richard Matheson) was also the basis for the Will Smith zombie movie of the same name.

The ending to "Night of the Living Dead" makes me so sad and angry. But that was the point to the film. Duane gave such a beautiful performance that still touches the lives of so many 50+ years later.

In horror films, anyone is fair game I suppose. Even the main characters. They thought he was a zombie, he thought they were zombies. I wonder what would have happened if he'd called out for help?

I was 11 when I first saw Night Of The Living Dead and I remember feeling so drawn in by Ben. I felt like I was him. I felt like I was in his shoes throughout the entire film once he was introduced. He had that special affect on the audience. NOTLD is watched often in my home and on every Halloween as tribute. Thank you so much for this.

George Romero will forever have my respect; in the 1960s there were hardly any directors or movie producers who would even consider having an
African American as a lead in their films. Sydney Poitier (and maybe Harry Belafonte) were the only ones who were bonafide stars in 1967-68. In
an interview when Romero was asked about choosing Duane Jones all he said was that "he did the best job in the audition." Simple as that.
That he thought that way, and back then, is a tribute to him beyond words.

A fantastic actor. And kudos to Mr. Romero for portraying a black man as the protagonist and hero of the film. He doesn't get the acclaim of Sidney Poitier, but he added so much to that film. Without him, I don't think it would be the important film it is.
