I'm also doing up a GT550 as my first bike (£300 ebay bargain has already become £900 with all the extras) but focussing on the engine first, i.e complete rebuild bottom to top. Can I ask how you learned to weld/what equipment you have for it and how much it cost you? I'm looking at doing a similar chop on the rear end but never welded before and the thought scares me. I preferred the old bike......but...that's just me...
