    In 1967, I played in a Pennsylvania District Band, under COL Arnold Gabriel of the USAF Band. During rehearsals, he was very precise with his hands, demanding that we hit the beat every time his fingers closed. During the concert, i looked up and realized he was dancing around on the podium, putting on a good show, but except at critical points, not very helpful at giving the beat. He had drilled us so well during rehearsal, that we were almost on autopilot, only looking up at him when there was a transition in tempo.
    Look at Solti during the Can-can at the end. He is, for the most part, hardly moving, and, like us, the orchestra is rarely even looking at him. The hard work is done rehearsal. The performance is just for fun.

    Clarification: the music was composed by Jacques Offenbach but orchestrated and arranged by Manuel Rosenthal in 1938. Only one movement or part was composed by Rosenthal himself (#14 "Duel"). Most of the tunes were familiar well before 1938 such as "Can-Can" from Offenbach's "Orpheus in the Underworld" or "Barcarolle" from Offenbach's "Tales of Hoffman."

      There is a wonderful version by the Boston Pops recorded in the '50s that should be available. You may find this to be even better! I have it on a cd.and the sound is as magnificent as the performance!

    I agree; this version somewhat spoilt by the less than CD quality audio and the squashed down distorted image.
    Why did the contributor see fit to do this?

  • @Ziiiiiiiiiiip
    @Ziiiiiiiiiiip 12 лет назад +1

    Offenbach is not the composer of La Gaîté Parisienne, the composer is Manuel Rosenthal.

    • @carlopillinini
      @carlopillinini 8 лет назад +2

      Manuel Rosenthal è l'autore del balletto Gaîté parisienne, costituito dall'arrangiamento di pezzi, spesso molto popolari, di Jacques Offenbach (1819-1880)
