    Hi, thanks for posting! I am an archtop and semi nut and have zillions of them (Gibo's, Gretsch, Epi's...). I have been looking at the Godin's and Loar's so your views and observations are appreciated. So yeah, unlike others, I get the 'point' of your vid. Thanks again!

    Informative review of 3 different guitars. I was curious about the Loar, but now I'm thinking it might make a good acoustic alternative. Rather than bringing higher end acoustic flat top guitars out for acoustic jams... the Loar would suit my needs and give a different tone than other acoustics. Thanks for a great demo, and nice playing.

    If you are considering these, you should note that the Loar is designed to be an acoustic guitar and the others are designed to be primarily electric. The Loar, with all solid woods, has much better acoustic volume and tone; if you put a pickup on it, you might be fine in low-volume situations, but it would in general be much more prone to feedback than the other two. This is why Gibson went with laminates in its electric jazz boxes - to minimize feedback.

    Thanks for putting video together. I bought the Lohr and had it a week before noticing poor craftmanship in the build. It felt good in my hands but didn't know it was made in China. I bought it in a boutique store. I returned it and later opted for the Godin. Canadian made, canadian materials and very well built. Accoustically quieter than the Lohr but I beleived it sounded less tinny accoustically. I have the Kingpin with one P90 and don't use it accoustically anyway. I have a 1948 Gibson ES 300 archtop electric which sounds even better but I am quite happy to use the sound of the Godin in my practices. It is 1/3 the weight of the Gibson and obviously cheaper. I'm glad I made the switch and proud to have bought north american for nearly the same price as the offshore Lohr.

    Hi,
    thank you for great review. recently I had a chance to try Loar - two different LH-600 and I was surprised to find they were not really well-built, frets needed correction and made buzzing, glue here and there. Though it was loud and to me even to bright.
    I heard very good reviews about it. Is it possible that teh quality fell down?
    Godin for example sounded much lower, but much more balanced and very well built.

    • @PeteAxeShields
      @PeteAxeShields 4 года назад

      I am with you 100% Yury. Although the Godin 5th Avenue Kingpin is always referred to an entry level arch top, I have found this is purely because of the superb value price point. Robert Godin's objective was to make an affordable arch top guitar without sacrificing the build quality. I believe he succeeded in his quest. The Godin 5th Avenue Kingpin is a beautifully built and balanced instrument. It is extremely versatile and lends itself perfectly to alt. Country as well as jazz and is a great guitar for the touring singer songwriter as it is extremely light ( the Tric Case by Godin is amazing - it is ridiculously light yet quite sturdy so carrying the guitar about is a breeze ) Godin are a wonderful company and their range of guitars is superb.

    Would you say that the volume and projection of The Loar compare to a classical acoustic guitar? I play classical guitar and I'm thinking of buying The Loar for playing Jazz acoustically, without amplification, like in a classical recital. However, there are no stores near where I'm living for me to play the guitar and se if it I will like it. Thanks for the video and congrats on your playing :D

    • @jeffreymatz
      @jeffreymatz  8 лет назад

      I'd say it's a good deal louder than a concert classical, although loudness and the way sound projects and carries is a different thing. But I'd say, if it were going to be a quiet, recital like atmosphere, in a room with good acoustics, the Loar would deliver.

    • @jeffreymatz
      @jeffreymatz  8 лет назад +1

      +jeffreymatz I should also add, significantly louder specifically if played with a plectrum.

    • @monjoUtube
      @monjoUtube 7 лет назад +1

      I have both Loar, Godin, Adam Black, and Gretsch all relatively cheap arch-tops. The Loar is definitely the loudest, but must be played with a bone or ebony plectrum to get the best from it. I use silk and steel on all four for playability although Phos would be louder. For ease of playing although the quietest is the Godin, in some ways it has the most sophisticated build too, the only one of the four that actually cantilevers the finger-board over the body, the others being mostly blocked in. The Loar is the only one I think with cellular finish which is proper but which damages really easily. The Godin and Gretsch have a matt finish which never looks right to me. Adam Black has a good shine but is just about near to a flat-top in design. All of them are worth the asking price, but if I had to keep one it would be the Godin simply because of ease of playing. N.B. All of these guitars can only sustain a low action and maintain near intonation by having the bridge at a rather canted angle, that's the trade-off.

  • @jeffreymatz
    @jeffreymatz  11 лет назад

    Jonah, I did not think overall the quality on my loar was great, but with a little work I like the sound...the factory strings were terrible...80/20's...very tinny and harsh. The guitar needed significant nut work and a bit of fretwork. The Godin sounds nice here but really doesn't have enough acoustic volume for any practical applications...it's affine electric guitar though. My pick as the best for a budget arch top.

  • @OwSharpStrings

    • @jeffreymatz
      @jeffreymatz  10 лет назад

      Probably have to go ebay, they were made for about 5 years in the late 50's early 60's.
      Theres certainly a lot of other choices out there for a big acoustic archtop...this video was originally made specifically for someone who wanted to hear all 3, not really as a "review."

  • @JJLipton
    @JJLipton 10 лет назад

    Good morning sir, do you find that the lack of a cutaway on the Godin severely limits the playabiity of the instrument?

    • @jeffreymatz
      @jeffreymatz  10 лет назад

      JJ...I was thinking about it a bit the other day...I don't find it particularly limiting, but I see how some people could...If that makes any sense. I actually really like a non cutaway archtop...but if I look at my playing style, because I do a lot of solo stuff, I tend to stay in the lower/middle register of the guitar where chords sound a little sweeter and less pinky to my ears anyway...

    • @MusikPlusMehr
      @MusikPlusMehr 6 лет назад

      jeffreymatz Yes, the V-neck takes getting used to. Luckily, almost by chance, the flat top guitar I’ve been playing for years has a V-neck… So it doesn’t feel that strange to me anymore.

    • @jeffreymatz
      @jeffreymatz  6 лет назад

      MuzikPlus it's funny, I actually really like a soft V neck...but the Loar's was too pronounced for me.
      If I had kept it as a "rhythm guitar" and played with my thumb over the neck a lot I don't think it would have bothered me...but the guitar sounded so good in the end I didn't want to keep it as a rhythm only guitar...

    The first two guitars I think you played had similar strings but the last one, The Loar were not the flat round, I know not a scientific but it would have given something to judge, even just newer strings makes difference. I really admire your jazz playing ability and the first two comparisons, where in my book, the best honest Ive seen, but when you did the Loar, it seemed to me you were plugging guitars for them? So Im a little suspicious, that they gave you a free guitar.

    • @jeffreymatz
      @jeffreymatz  9 лет назад

      Well, I can assure you it's no plug, and that I didn't recieve the guitar for free.
      I've actually since sold it, as much as i liked the sound i found the necj uncomfirtable to play for extended periods if time.
      Generally, I tell folks that the first guitar, the Godin, is the best budget minded "jazz guitar" out there.

      Hey, the video was made for one person on an online forum like 8 years ago. It was never intended to have 1000's of views, but here we are. I'm much better looking now, too.
      The guitars are a Godin Kingpin, a early 60's Kay "master cutaway," and a Loar LH-600.
      This is no scientific test, it's literally just a video I made for someone who wanted to hear all 3 of my guitars.
