I have an AR 610 I use for swing and gypsy jazz. Took some experimenting to find string guage, string type and string height that gave it a sound and playability I was happy with but it's great now! Currently playing nickel bronze 12s which gives a little cutting power that the mahogany back might lack over the maple
Great demonstration. The 4-5 main guitar designs each do something useful. Our ears are accustomed to the X braced flattop and electric coil pickup, and to a limited extent the classical. The old ladder braced (and gypsy jazz - ladder braced) and archtops aren't familiar to our ears but are great sounding guitars. You made that thing get a banjo-guitar sound that fit the bill, something I wouldn't have expected from an archtop - Thanks for the demo.
I have an 804 without the cutaway. It's a great rhythm instrument and I do play Freddie Green style and also in a gypsy jazz band with a Dupont. The Eastman, these rather, to me at least are more jazz boxes and should be played that way. they are great for swing rhythm. But the rhythm for both Green versus Django is very different and it would have been good to hear those styles presented a bit more accurately. I liked hearing the fingerstyle approach - these are really nice guitars...
I have not heard these particular guitars, so I can not comment on how accurate this recording is. I have however played many guitars at SoundPure and feel the folks there do an incredible job capturing the tone of the guitars in their demos. I personally find proper micing of acoustic guitars very challenging. They have really figured out proper mic placement for acoustic instruments. They also happen to have constructed great sounding rooms.
One difference that's not mentioned is the woods used for the fingerboard and tailpiece. On the 810 it seems to be ebony, and the 610 rosewood. This makes a difference in the feel of the fingerboard and on the overall tone of each instrument. My preference is ebony. Nothing feels quite like a solid slab of ebony under the fingertips. :0) I'd like to hear these guitars in person or recorded better (although there's only so much that comes through on youtube :- / ). Your fingerstyle is very well done btw.
Helpful demo since you get the difference between maple and mahogany. The presenter unfortunately is not at home in the genre this type of guitar has been built for. I'd love to have heard what both these guitars can do when played appropriately. I could never do it myself, it is very very difficult. Matt Munisteri or Julian Lage are masters who can, but hey... :-) They might be too busy demoing Eastman's :-)
You mean hollow body? The Eastman AR371CE has a real nice jazz box sound (full hollowbody, one pickup). There are a bunch of Eastmans like that. John Pisano models are beautiful.
You should buy a Gibson ES-175 and an amp if you want that sound. Acoustic carved top guitars like this sound like well... acoustic guitars. They were designed to sound bright and loud so they could be heard in a rhythm section of a big band.
The second guitar has a stunning ethereal glow, I think it was made in heaven and I want it bad. I have a Gretsch syncro re-issue laminate archtop from Korea. It plays and sounds ok for me (an amateur at best ) and also another cheapie JD luthiers all mahogany archtop with a pick up at the neck which is a bit average. I sure would like to trade em both in for that mahogany back beauty. About how much are they and where should I get one ? Thanks for the great and informative review.
Since I've watched Groovy guitar videos, and you may know what he thinks of hollow bodies, and how he thinks if you use a guitar with pickups, then don't sweat the body... Well, then if he's right then I'd like to have that gorgeous maple on the front too. (Not acoustic..electric)
Sounds like it might have 80/20 bronze flat-top strings on it.Too harsh. They like phosphor bronze if you want to go cheap, or high dollar specialized if you're playing for dinero. It's practically a different instrument than a modern fixed bridge guitar, but that doesn't mean you're limited to brass band chord ladders or a pickup and down-to-the-deck skinny noodle strings.
vecernicek2 The point of this video is the guitar, not your stupid pretentious opinion on how some lick is supposed to be played. We don't give a fuck, we're here to hear the guitar... not your dumb mouth.
So much great hardware you guys have there yet you can't mike the guitar to capture its sound accurately (realistic, full and rich sound reproduction). Sounds like it was recorded with mobile phone...
Yes, that's the sound you get from archtops if you strum them like you would a dreadnought and pick cowboy chords on them (like you would pick a dreadnought). Honestly I am not trolling. Those of you who are genuinely trying to find information about archtops, please disregard this video. There is no shame in not knowing anything about archtops or Jazz but if you don't, why would you be so compelled to make a video to share your opinions on this subject.
Yes, you can play an acoustic arch top in a gentle jazz solo style, but that's not what they were originally designed for. They were designed to be heard in a big band setting with a rhythm section chopping out 4 bar style chords. I believe the kid did a good job showing off the tone of this type of guitar, which actually sounds pretty good for the price I think. Quality tap tuned acoustic carved arch tops sound bright and responsive, with lots of midrange.
I have a AR910 and a AR810CE. They are both beautiful, responsive, and quite capable instruments in the right hands. Unfortunately, the player in this video is basically beating the crap out of them, and any guitar will sound harsh in response. The setup of any instrument is also a critical variable. A poor setup and the wrong strings will make any guitar sound less than it's capable of. There are other videos online of these guitars played by people who can actually get a nice sound out of them.
Yeah, sure you can play an acoustic arch top in a gentle jazz solo style and I realize that's what most people buy them for these days. But this type of guitar wasn't designed for that. Acoustic carved top guitars were originally designed to be heard in a big band setting chopping out 4 bar chords in the rhythm section. They were built for volume with a lot of midrange so they could be heard. They were designed to have the crap beat out of them lol!
This is a poor example of performance on these beautiful sounding guitars. Bang on any guitar and it will respond as it sounds. Play it with musical experience and then you will really hear what it has to offer sonically. These guitars are wonderful to play!! Ross Perovic, 35 years fretternist👍😅
This kid should have done his homework before trying to teach others about arch tops. Eddy Lang would have been embarrassed FOR him. It's OK to be ignorant about guitars, their history, and techniques, but PLEASE don't share your ignorance. It makes real teachers jobs that much harder.
Sorry, but guitars are discretionary expenditures and I can't see how you would enjoy playing an instrument day after day knowing that it has been assembled by small children's hands under really poor conditions in a totalitarian country like China. I emphasize with all the Chinese citizens that have to live under the oppressive, murderous dictatorship but wasn't it enough for you how the dictatorship has spread lies and deadly pandemics around the globe for decades killing millions of people and not even taking responsibility for this? How can you enjoy playing this guitar?

I suggest monel strings, the same old time musicians used until 50ties. Martin produce them under the name Retró".
@@Domingojazz I have some queued up to try next!

Great compare/contrast demo on both. Really illustrated the dynamics of both fingerpicking and strumming for each. Well done!

Say what you will about the freddie green thing, his fingerstyle thing was killin af
Not sure if it'd work for my style...but that guitar is a gem.
You know nothing of how Freddie Green played rhythm
Beautiful guitars. I'd like to hear some blues played on them.

It’s true - archtops sing with a proper right hand technique
Too bright/harsh sounding in my opinion. Is there another solid body model by Eastman that sounds darker, richer, more "bassy"... ? :)

it's all how you play it, If you play closer to the fretboard and if you push rather than play like a flat top then it sounds completely different
@@Theydotheharlemshake If you push? Could you explain? I've never heard that term and I'm very curious.
great demo. those 2 guitars sound wonderful

i just don't get the claim that archtops are meant to be louder---the sound so muffled compared to flattops
Love the sound of both!!

I want the Ar810 non cutaway like in this video..is anybody selling?
Looks lovely - would be nice to have internal pickup and eq control for electro acoustic uses
K&K got a great pickup specialised for acoustic archtop guitars

Do more of these please!!!
Good video !
I think you put it well. If you don't have the luxury of a drummer, you strum on an archtop.
EXCELLENT!
You play very well Robinson. Sounds great on both these guitars. Ignore the arseholes.
I gig quite often with an Eastman AR605. Fine guitar.
I want the same guitar
That's not how Freddie Greene play in anyway whatsoever.
amen
Who cares?
"Who cares?" Man, that's sad.

Who is mike?
I believe that is Condenser Mike. At least I hope so. Dynamic Mike is OK but he doesn't have the same class.
watwatwatwat? why not play jazz? It is a ARCHTOP guitar!
Muuroong Geooffrey he played minor swing
This is the exact two Eastman archtops l want. Just straight acoustic !
1:11 So it is similar to a mandolin?! The mandolin acts as a a snare drum! 🥁
Did he actually say Freddie Greene ..?
How to play a solid top arch top? Well, there's lots of ways. Check out House RN's comment (below).

Do you see youtube reviewers playing jazz on a Martin? No. Wonder why. God forbid we hear jazz on a jazz guitar haha.
TYPO, but obvious: meant to say miking*...but seriously, quality is lacking, its shame for good instruments like this one...
