  • Following a recent trip to Ickworth House near Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk on a beautiful Summers day, I was inspired to create a little landscape painting. This is the second painting in the Ickworth series.
The garden depicted in this painting is in the grounds of the original head gardeners lodge on the estate. The lodge itself is owned by the National Trust and is a holiday home open to the paying public.
Ickworth House was started in 1795 and completed in 1829 and was originally home to Frederick Harvey the 4th Earl of Bristol and Bishop of Derry. It is a magnificent estate with the house and gardens now owned by the National Trust. In fact part of the house is now a hotel - but the entire estate is open to the public.
The walled garden was originally created as a leisure garden and eventually became a working kitchen garden early last century and is being restored to it's original full glory as a kitchen garden supplying fresh fruit and vegetables to the estate eateries.
The vast explosion of colour that greets the eyes is amazing with a vast array of wild flowers in full bloom. It really was an artists dream to see this astonishing landscape.
In the painting I only use acrylic paint on a small stretched canvas. The painting itself was completed over two days.
If you ever get a chance to visit Ickworth, I can highly recommend it as a place to just lose yourself in the vast estate.
