The VA expecting veterans w/ mental health, neurological, & Traumatic Brain Injury disabilities to be able to perform this level of mental gymnastics to gain access to services is ridiculous.
This. I have several neurological impairments, to include a TBI that ultimately led to my medboard and Permanent and Total disability rating, so just about every job I have attempted to perform in the past has come up short. Why they expect all of this when they can deny you so easily if they want to is beyond me. They need to do better.
Nick, I agree. I wrote Congressman Bost about this very issue when it comes to VA Compensation claims. They are putting in legislation to fix this issue.
@chillwill5080 I struggle with work, it doesn’t mean I can’t work. They literally are designed to help those who struggle with jobs, why make the process harder?
Again, thank you for informing us of what to expect. Veteran services can be extremely difficult to navigate without people like you to extend knowledge. We appreciate you tremendously!!!
Thank you so much for this awesome advice. I did my application last Thursday and I received a text message from the counselor today to give a call today for my appointment. I will be having the appointment in the morning, so I'm thankful I came across your video because I had no idea what to expect. Thank you again!
I actually had the eVA option, so I took that option. I had initial orientation appointment & watched a video & slideshow. I then completed the assessment. Afterwards came the VBA-28-1902w VR & E Questionnaire. This basically asks the questions that are discussed in this video. I this video was a lifesaver. I just received the actual face to face appointment for 10/13. I’m sure this is when the decision will be made.
Thank you so much for making this video, brother. I'm looking into applying for VR&E for a complete and total career change. Is definitely helps out a lot. God bless you!
Thank you for breaking this down regarding this being an "employment program" not an "education program" although they pay for the education for the employment advancement. That makes alot of sense!
Thanks for sharing this information. I'm preparing for my initial VRE VIRTUAL GROUP ORIENTATION APPOINTMENT, and this was very helpful. I hope your new career path is going well. Sending a young Ranger to med school seems like money well spent for the VA.
Hello, do you have any advice on how you explained to your counselor why your back pain would not hinder your ability to become a doctor? My counselor did not give me the time to explain how my service related disabilities would not hinder my goal of being a nurse and basically ended our conversation with the fact that she is denying me. Leaving me no option but to appeal her decision. Do you have any further guidance? Thank you so much in advance
hey sorry for the delay, i've been swamped with med school starting. i would consider reapplying first before appealing. for me, my back pain is worse when i sit in one position for a long time, and is better when I'm able to walk around, stand, sit for a while, then repeat. basically for me, it's better when I'm able to change positions often and move around a bit. this is perfect for being a physician since you're going patient to patient and also able to sit and stuff in between. i don't know what your specific situation/disabilities are, but I hope this helps. if you can explain how the profession will not further exacerbate your disabilities, then they shouldn't erroneously deny you.
First and foremost, GREAT VIDEO! I'm attempting to use VR&E for the "Long-Term Service Track" seeking a career as a Pilot. I was directed to apply for these VA benefits 1st because Post 9/11 most likely won't cover all the expenses with a degree program, so here I am. I attained my Private Pilot License/Cert last month which I was told was a requirement for VR&E. My appointment with my VRC is scheduled for 30 November. I'll let you know how it goes. Any additional feedback or advice from anyone would be greatly appreciated.
Whoa! 😮 I did not get an approval...however, she gave me a laundry list items to acquire and provide within the next 30 days and she'll use that to see about submitting me for approval. Initially, I could tell her goal was to convince me that it would be impossible to get approved for VR&E due to changes in the program and how "Florida" views using this program for flight training 🙄. THIS VIDEO DEFINITELY HELPED ME STAND MY GROUND AND FIGHT FOR THIS ENTITLEMENT. I'll keep you all posted.

I am currently in school for computer science using the GI bill but want to use VR&E for it. What would I say if they ask me "Why can't you just use your GI bill to get the education needed?"
VRE offers so many other services besides just paying for school, so I would frame it in that light. Look into what they offer that correlates with your career path. One thing they help with is support all the way through to employment, which GI Bill does not. You'll have a counselor that will be with you every step of the way, which is a huge advantage.
I applied for VR&E and I’m planning to use it on my computer science degree. Is there any way you can give me some pointers on what you did? @cr7neymar908

I have a good relationship with my counselor and they are requesting "written justification", but I just want to make sure that I word my 'justification' correctly to get approved for a program change. Anything helps, TIA
That’s good that you have a solid relationship with your counselor, that makes it much easier. I would use the same language they use in their code. Something like you’re changing to this degree bc it “more aligns with your abilities, aptitudes and interests and it will be a better fit with my disabilities now that I’ve done more career research and exploration.”

I’m security officer and am 54 so wanting to do something better as I get older…have other claims in for back, eyes; so should I wait for other claims to possibly get approved first, or do you think I would qualify as is?? Would they ask you during the interview "Why dont you just use the gi bill instead?" If it is determined school is needed to get to your career goal. Like how would i argue that I want to use vrne before tapping into my gi bill program?
If i already have an MBA and employed would that be a hard sell in your opinion? I'm 52 and in project management but would like to get a license for a counselor or therapist.
does your current job exacerbate your disabilities (physical, mental, etc)? VRE is all about landing you in a career that not only aligns with your abilities, aptitudes and interests, but also into a career that won't disturb your underlying disabilities. if you're in a career that isn't good for you, and you need VRE support to land in a career that is good for you, then you should look into it. unfortunately, sometimes counselors take into consideration previous schooling and work experience that really shouldn't be a discriminating factor. for example, when I first applied i got denied right off the bat because i had a bachelor's degree and that counselor thought I didn't need their services bc I could land a job with my degree, but he was wrong to do that bc my job after the military was destroying my disabilities, and I needed their help to get the education and training I needed to gain meaningful employment in a field that wouldn't further exacerbate my disabilities.
@chillwill5080 hey I was just asking because Ive heard that vr&e is of great help when searching for jobs ,training and even college. Some people apply for jobs and have no luck ,even more when it comes to looking for anything remote. Many american based companies dont hire outside the US , maybe vr&e knows something we dont and can point us in a better direction. I was just wondering if it could be used as a resource overseas basically. Whats with all that hostility , just a question no need for all that. I wish you well. Take care out there.
@chillwill5080how is that answer helping his question? Don’t you think he’s already doing that? He’s already viewing this video since the creator more than likely knows more about the subject than he does, so is a SME in that regard. You seem to do more trolling than helping fellow Vets, which is a shame
@@kunachainzzz I came here as I’m currently in Germany and running into the same problems with remote jobs and being outside the CONUS. From what I’ve learned, a lot of Health related problems can be addressed through the Foreign Medical Program (FMP) out of Denver, and for VR&E, the Pittsburgh VA should handle cases outside the U.S. I’m trying to learn everything I can before applying and have been diving through the Regs and viewing videos like this to see if there’s anything which will help. I’m not sure if there is a VA presence where you are, but there isn’t here in Germany and in Europe, so it can make things more difficult in working with them. Best of luck to you!
I've been out of the army since 2005, honorable discharge, 50% disabled, do I still meet the qualifications? I'm trying to figure out how this could help me finish developing my ATV Park.

The primary thing they are concerned with is getting you in a career that doesn’t further exacerbate your disabilities. So for mental health issues, if you’re trying to go into a very stressful career, they probably won’t approve it
Hey so I would like to use this program for an education in anthropology, since you stated that the main purpose of this program is for a job/ career not really for education, my question is then, in regards to the interview, can I state that I want to use this program for an education that is similar to to my MOS (example: I was communication while in the service and I want to pursue a career in cyber security) but then can I apply it towards anthropology if approved? Or how does that work
No you need to be honest about your career goals bc you're going to have a counselor assigned to you that is going to keep tabs on the classes you're taking and the grades you're getting to make sure you're staying locked in on your path
I got years before I get out but I have 10% from burn pits. Is there a way I could approach this interview to get approved for a electrician apprenticeship
good question, you should explain why you need their help and not just the benefits that gi bill gives, which is paying for school and that's it. VRE is a rehabilitation program designed to help you land in a career that doesn't further exacerbate your disabilities, and they offer much more than just payment for school. You also get a dedicated counselor that helps you along the way, which the GI bill doesn't give you. my counselor is great and he has helped me a lot, and I think it is a huge benefit to the program.

If i want to go into the Ministry field, to become a Pastor of a church, does voc rehab work in that area? Iwas told by a certified counselor that they do, just want to verify
Is there a requirement to obtain employment after training completion? Will it effect disability rating or payment? I am P&T Unemployable according to my rating. I am interested in obtaining a Gunsmithing certification or degree in firearm science. I'm also interested in UAV Tech certification. Anyone have any experience in these things?
I was denied twice. I am still currently working but I know I am going to get laid off soon. I was wanting to get funding for my A&P license since during my time in the Air Force I worked on aircraft. I’m guessing I got denied because I am still currently working and not unemployed. I was also denied funding to get a CDL.
sorry to hear your troubles going through this process. it's unfortunate to say, but a counselor may be more apt to approve you if you are unemployed, even though that isn't a necessary criteria.

@chillwill5080calm down buddy
@chillwill5080dare u to talk to me like that in rl
Best of luck to you!
thanks for info!
Glad it was helpful!
What if I’m a barber looking to pursue computer science I want to be a software engineer focusing on backend coding?
Thank you...
anytime! hope it helps!
Thank you!
anytime!
I've been out of the army since 2005, honorable discharge, 50% disabled, do I still meet the qualifications? I'm trying to figure out how this could help me finish developing my ATV Park.
Ya your eligible however after you apply you need to prove your entitlement via interview like shown in this video
Yep, sounds like you would try to go down the self employment track that VRE offers
To all that have a applied and got approved for the VR&E that suffer from primarily mental health issues
how was the interview process for you and also how long did it take after to applied to get your interview because
at this time I’m trying to figure out if I should apply now or wait a little as I want to relocate do schooling in Houston Tx
interested in a under grad degree pertaining to business and IT …
The primary thing they are concerned with is getting you in a career that doesn’t further exacerbate your disabilities.
Absolutely, you could definitely use VRE for that
Thank you for your advice. What if they asked why I don't use my GI bill instead?what would be the right answer?
good question, you should explain why you need their help and not just the benefits that gi bill gives, which is paying for school and that's it.
I was denied for having a degree , but I have seen several other posts about people receiving the benefit with a Bachelor's, so how do I navigate that?
Former Combat medic, medically retired due to PTSD 70%, now a crime scene photographer, job is consistent but exasperates my disabilities.
Going to Bible school and need another year of tuition to finish and obtain a job in this field.
Do you think I might qualify?
Yes
Anyone here use it for SDI? Gunsmithing? They offer a certificate and also a associates, will vre do certs?
Honestly I’m not 100% sure on that, if there is a legit certification and a clear path to employment I don’t see why not
What If I have a masters degree in cybersecurity but I am unemployed, would I still have a chance?
It’s going to be tough but depends on your situation, current disabilities, what career you want to do, etc
So is the VA treating veterans in this program like an Article 15 hearing?
If i want to go into the Ministry field, to become a Pastor of a church, does voc rehab work in that area? Iwas told by a certified counselor that they do, just want to verify
I don’t see why not, have you applied yet? Sorry I’m quite a bit late, trying to catch up on comments
Got recommended right before my first appointment on Friday 🫨
Good luck!
Do you have to be unemployed when applying?
I was denied twice. I am still currently working but I know I am going to get laid off soon. I was wanting to get funding for my A&P license since during my time in the Air Force I worked on aircraft. I’m guessing I got denied because I am still currently working and not unemployed. I was also denied funding to get a CDL.
sorry to hear your troubles going through this process. it's unfortunate to say, but a counselor may be more apt to approve you if you are unemployed, even though that isn't a necessary criteria.
Hey man feel free to pick me apart. c-130 loadmaster trying to apply for VR&E for a commercial pilot program. Already being in mil aviation, applying for another aviation program on the outside. How would you approach a new program if the possible future employment may stress existing disability?
since VR&E is an employment program, they won't approve anything that they think will further exacerbate your disabilities.
Let's go!!!!
Yezzir!
I just did my application (VA form 28-1900) last week, how long does it take to hear back from that step?
About a month and then they should schedule you for your initial interview
Would it be possible to go to school to become a psychiatrist even though I have a VA disability for anxiety? I also have a back pain disability and am trying to get out of construction and hard labor jobs
I am able to navigate and efficiently help people because of my disability and I do not get anxiety when it comes to helping other people; only anxiety with my own personal issues.
This is exactly what I’m wondering. I got rated for anxiety but want to become a psychologist.
I was found eligible but the supervisor of my counselor is saying no due to conditions. I’m now in process of showing my training and job is doable. I have to fight this
It's a fight worth fighting!
@@Moneyandcareers I got approved verbally after proving that I can do the job but I think my counselor is a person that BS’s. I have a class mate that met his counselor in a Monday and by Thursday he was approved and ready to go and he had his PO number to go to the bookstore with
@@jslack8973 wow that’s a quick turnaround for them! Good luck, hopefully you can follow through with them and get the deal done!
So 100% P&D is gonna be tough
Potentially, yes
I am so such on a time crunch. I have my first orientation for Voc Rehab on the 12th. I am 100%pt. When I talked to VA education, they said I only have till January 24, 2024 to finish using my CH 9-11, so I would like to know asap if I am entitled. Some service members I talk to say they got approved first appointment, some said they had to wait weeks until they found out.
I'm sorry I'm just now getting around to your comment, i had to reapply (i was denied the first time). every veteran that has gone through the vre process has a different story to tell. what's your status now? did you apply and get approved?
Do you know anyone who used this program for aviation? Professional Pilot?
Did they change it from 20% to 10%
I want to be a project manager is that something they can help me with
How much does the veteran get paid, per month?
If you have 1 day left of GI bill they will pay you GI bill rate of bah for your zip code. Otherwise it’s a slightly lower rate sustenance allowance
EMTs do not make a living wage
I don't think I'm eligible due to its been over 30 years and I just found out about this
Any veterans in North Alabama want to get together and start a survival/prepper/militia type group?
Video about getting approved for Technology package upgrade? The entry-level laptop they provide won't work for many education plans.
my counselor had me send him the tech requirements (which should be posted by your university) and I sent him a few options based on that and got a surface which has worked great!
Even if you are approved don't get your hope up. I have been waiting 10 years to get services and I doubt I EVER WILL. These ppl are shameless bastards and I hope they fire all the counselors that make false promises, ghost you, tell you that you got funded and then never sign off on a purchase order, and then expect you to obediently behave after they let you down ONCE AGAIN. God forbid you ask questions about why your program date is pushed back because they will withdraw your funding altogether.
It can definitely be a trying experience
@@MoneyandcareersI complained and now they blacklisted me…not bothering to get back to me. Even the state ombudsman.
Thanks for sharing this valuable information. I have my group virtual orenintation in a week and this video has helped me prepare for it. Thank you.
So if I’m doing my second interview do they see that or do I let them know?
They know
