    SUCCESS!! The parts came in today. I swapped 12 caps. My values were differerent than the service manual parts list. I just went with the values on the board. Everything is back to normal. No cracked screen. Easy to snap back together.

      Scroungineer Yeah it was good to get it working again. Plus I was at a thrift shop and I found a Pantone Colorvision Spyder to calibrate the colors on my LCD monitor. It was just $4 for Pantone Spyder. Colors look awesome now. Really simple to calibrate using the software and the Spyder attached to your monitor.

      @@sharkieQue another way to check caps is a cheap but powerful device called lcr tranistor tester from ebay, it can measure µF and ESR of caps to see if they are way off what the label says or not. This way you can mark the waek spot for the next time.

      I love this monitor and i use it dayl so this is my second repair.

    The trick to getting around the ribbon cable is to pop loose the front farme, (using a long thin metal spudger sliding it straight in along the frame they tabs will just pop free without breaking) and after you have all of the frame free, lay the monitor on it's face and lift the back off, where you will see the other end of the cable and disconnect it there. It's actually very easy once you figure it out.

    I had one of these monitors and managed to get it open without breaking anything. It started turning off and rebooting randomly and I suspected bad capacitors so I bought a capacitor kit which contained replacements for all the garbage quality capacitors on the power supply board, some of which had bulged. After replacing them all I got it back together and it is still working for my wife's friend. A lot of electronics manufactured in that era had this problem and it was because several Chinese manufacturers used a defective formula for the electrolyte used to manufacture the capacitors. Dell actually got sued because they had a bad batch of motherboards that failed prematurely.

    Scroungi...I have a Dell E228WFP which looks very similar to yours...I've found a better way to remove the crappy front bezel frame without inserting any tools and chipping the sides of the back plastic panel. Very carefully grip the bezel frame from the screen side and pull upwards and away. It snaps out much easier with no damage to the screen or bezel. Looks much better as it looks like it was never taken apart. I have a black screen problem with no green or orange LED illuminated. I found 2 bulging Samxon 470uf 25v 105C caps at locations C858 and C864. I'm going to replace them and hope it works. Thanks for a great tutorial.

    My 2005FPW has a power board problem--inverter starts the lamps for a quarter second, I can see the "DELL" splash screen from the logic board, and it goes black.
    My disassembly went okay when I saw the pictures in the service manual:
    Hook fingertips under the edge of top bezel, between LCD panel and plastic, gently bend up and out. Catches will disengage. Work around to upper corners, do same on left edge, right edge and finally bottom edge. Do not try to remove frame yet.
    Put monitor face down and remove black plastic back panel. Gently unlatch thin cable from button board from electronics. Remove front bezel.

    Thanks for the Ilustrating in this video the way to fix this monito! This so helped me to REPAIRED my Similar HP 2405FPW with it come almos with the same specs but it s a really way better manufactured model! Mine was only having one set of six 470uf charged @ 35V really messed up, but I replaced them all the power board and it works LIKE NEW! :-) Thanks a BUNCH from NYC! Best of luck

    Thank you for sharing this video. Besides some bad capacitors, I run into another problem with this monitor type. A broken backlight wire. I can hear a hissing sound and smell ozone in one of the corners of the lcd panel. So I am not finished yet...

    I have this Dell 24" monitor 2405FPW that I believe the capacitors blew like you mentioned in your video. My monitor is not cracked and has no problems once those capacitors are replaced. If you want to buy it from me I will let it go for cheap. I actually loved this monitor until those crap capacitors they put in blew!

    Hi Master, I had a broken ceramic fuse "F801T3.15A/250VAC". But I can't find this type of fuse in my city. Could you tell me PLEASE, can I use the fuse ""F5A 250V or F4A 250V" instead of it ???

    Currently repairing the same model monitor. Fortunately mine does not have a cracked screen. I was able to open it easily with small twisting motion of flathead screwdriver. I found that it was best to start opening the case at a corner where I could already see small gap. I always order my caps from Mouser Electronics. Is Digikey cheaper from your experience? My monitor is flashing and it won't turn on. Green Power LED was also flashing at the same time as the LCD screen. I agree with you that it takes time to write down all the values for the caps. Plus you have to measure the height , diameter and lead spacing to make sure you get the correct form factor capacitor. It is all very time consuming. Plus you to wait for the parts order to come in. Currently creating the parts list. Did the service manual you found contain a parts list?

    • @Scroungineer
      @Scroungineer  10 лет назад

      Only a partial one, which was disappointing. I had to base my order off the labeled values. Another reason I loathe Dell. I use Digikey simply because they tend to have the weirder values in stock for 1-2 item sales.

      thanks for the info. I did find a copy of the service manual just a few minutes ago. It does have the entire parts list.

    Great job on the repair work though, thanks for sharing that. I have a Hell...I mean Dell 2007WFPb and what it's doing is just completely shutting off after its been on awhile. It will then turn back on and maybe stay on or shut right back off. Does this intermittently, on/off/on and it may even stay on for a long while before going through the same routine ....Do you think it's the capacitors or power supply issue?

  • @roymg
    @roymg 8 лет назад

    Judging from the time you spent doing the repair, if one were to get paid to do this, how much would it had cost verses just buying a new one? Looked pretty tedious and complicated especially the breakdown of the unit. I've had mine for about 10 years. It must have the best manufactured parts. Very good video, thanks.

    I used to work in a repair shop, I think the hardest part of the job was just taking things apart. I don't know why they design things the way they do.

    i have a dell 2405FPW and it sometimes the display turns off / black for a fraction of a second (the power leds stays on / do not flicker) - sometimes it goes off on off on like 10 times and sometimes it then stays off for some seconds. then on other days it can work for hours without any problem. do you have an idea what this might could cause or how to fix it since i do not want to throw the monitor away if its easy to fix :). the problem is unrelated to the computer in use - the monitor behaves the same on different machines.

  • @sebastianheyn4886
    @sebastianheyn4886 8 лет назад +1

    I did 2 of them - however one of them seems to have a broken backlight even though I cannot explain it... Both tubes connected, the psu makes a high frequency hiss noise for 2 seconds then switches off the backlight. Connecting either one of them is OK - however when connecting a different panel, both tubes, everything is fine. WTF.

  • @markitzero12

    I wonder if that monitor was made were the off name cap companies were using a incomplete formula, the one thing was missing an anti-corrosion to were the electrolyte eats its metal casing.

  • @Weech.

    I have an Asus VS247HP. Just the other day I noticed very light diagonal grey lines across the screen. I've tried the monitor on a different PC, and they still showed up on my other PC. I really don't know what causes them. I don't think they lines are from pixels. It looks like they're on the outer layer of the screen, but under the outer layer. It's driving me nuts. I really want to know what causes this so I can prevent the issue from ever happening again.

  • @starryskyn7232

    Damage to bezel frame shown in this video is result of wrong techniques of prying bezel and unhooking button cable from wrong end. See my other post.
    Now I know I have a burned transformer coil on lamp power output, so I will buy a $50 power board replacement and drop that in--much simpler.

    I have this monitor, mine works for a little while and then the screen goes black with the power LED being orange (like the monitor went to sleep). If I turn it off and then back on I get display for a couple of seconds and then it goes black again with orange LED. Would that be the 2 caps that are notorious for going bad?

    • @Scroungineer
      @Scroungineer  10 лет назад

      More than likely, yes. That's the classic symptom you'll see on many monitors--usually once the unit warms up, the power supply cannot keep itself regulated because the caps in it are too far out of tolerance. It's basically going into "safety shutdown" because the detected voltage is too high/low.

    • @sethhill5689
      @sethhill5689 10 лет назад

      Scroungineer Do you have the list of all the caps that you replaced? I'd like to order and replace them like you did. I couldn't read the paper in the video and I don't see it listed here.

    • @Scroungineer
      @Scroungineer  10 лет назад

      Seth Hill Afraid not. You'll have to freeze-frame the video @ 11:17 or so, blown up to full screen @ 720p resolution, and try to work from that handwritten list.

    • @sethhill5689
      @sethhill5689 10 лет назад

      Scroungineer Ok, so I did that and wrote down what you had. I will have to do some measuring for lead spacing and sizes. Looking at Digi-Key's site I see that there is ripple current & impedance on some of them, do you know if they had any values on those?

    • @Scroungineer
      @Scroungineer  10 лет назад

      Seth Hill I don't recall any of the cap labels listing ripple or impedance. You want the LOW impedance values though when you order. I also suggest bumping up some of the general voltage ratings, especially on the larger caps--switch to 25V instead of 16V, etc.

    Dell generally isn't worth the effort, given the poor packaging. I am given, and promptly scrap, most anything with a Dell logo on it, unless it is post P4/PD. (and even then think twice) Most of the issues I have seen on Dell flat-panel monitors is related to backlight inverter or power supply. As far as the "big cap" not failing... I've seen several of them with Alien-like ruptures.
    What ESR meter do you use?

    • @Scroungineer
      @Scroungineer  10 лет назад

      The meter was a kit-thing a friend gave to me. "The BLUE ESR Meter" from Ana-Tek Corporation. It works exceedingly well (tested against a proper high-end ESR bench meter). I was really bummed to discover the LCD panel was cracked after getting the dumb inverter working. It's still in my garage, and I use it as a "smoke test" display on scrounged PC boxes.

    Great video. A shame that the caps are such weak points. Valuing the time to do the work and downtime of the monitor not being avail... vs buying a new one... yeah, why the F don't manufacturers just spend the extra $5 and make a better quality monitor.
