I can just imagine the scene after Alexander died. "Sir. Terrible news. Rhodes has gone against us and sided with Ptolemy." Antigonus, "Rhodes? Where we're going, we don't need Rhodes... Eh, geddit? Anyone? No? Huh. Trust me, in two thousand years that'll be funny." Fantastic video Raven. But I can't help think that it's such a shame that there were only seven ancient wonders of the world. Because this is such a great series. Knock! Knock! Oh, gotta go. My new harbour has arrived. I have four now. I collect harbours. It was very popular in ancient times.
Ba dun tsss! We love a Back to the Future reference! I am also sad there are only 7, but I may have a bonus episode up my sleeve.... Good luck on that 5th harbour, I hear after 4 they get a bit unmanageable
The Colossus of Rhodes is the first thing I remember hearing described as one of the Seven Wonders Of The Ancient World. You'd think it would have been the pyramids but since they're the only ones still standing I think I only thought of them as wonders of the world--not associated with any time, ancient or modern. Learning about the Colossus prompted me to look up the others. I'm still fascinated by the mysteries of them which is why I love this series.
Very interesting to contemplate .. when Apollonius of Rhodes wrote 'Argonautica', that statue was still standing .. and he was in Alexandria, in Egypt.
raven in the tv show , LOST, that was on abc in the 2000s , they sailed past a large statue of a foot, that had obviously been a larger statue, but the rest had been toppled
The famous poem about the Statue of Liberty (the one where "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free" is from) is called "The New Colossus" and directly compares the two statues, with ol' Lady Liberty coming out on top of course (as opposed to the "brazen giant of Greek fame, with conquering limbs astride from land to land")
I’m surprised you didn’t mention “The New Colossus,” the poem Emma Lazarus wrote about the Statue of Liberty. Even if you don’t know the name, you’d probably recognize the poem (“… Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free …”) The poem was published while the statue’s pedestal was under construction. So even then, the comparison was being made between “Liberty Enlightening the World” (the Staue of Liberty’s full name) and the Colossus of Rhodes.
Heaped dirt around it when building? I remember doing that in minecraft before they added scaffolding... This was so interesting, I didn't know any of this
raven around 2 min when you are talking about different locations, it would have been nice and helpful if you showed a map of where those places were for us to see, i can't remember where all these locations are
Every description I have read of the Colossus of Rhodes said that it straddled the entrance to the harbor. But if that entrance was really 400 meters wide, well, the statue was 33 meters high, so it doesn’t add up. Maybe, as in many illustrations, there was a wall across the harbor entrance, and the Colossus straddled the opening in the wall that ships went through. But that doesn’t work either. Let’s say the opening was 8 meters wide- shucks, let’s say 10. What kind of entrance to a major harbor is only 10 meters wide? So, obviously, Raven is right- it wasn’t directly above the harbor, and definitely didn’t straddle the harbor or its entrance.
raven, i thought it was placed at the entry to the mediterraen sea at the straights of gibralter and across from it on spains coast? i guess i was wrong
Not "may have"......... Moral: I watched a doco some years back. It dealt with a Roman era bath house unearthed by archeologists. Now finding Roman era bathhouses is nothing new. This one was unique in that = the bronze boiler used to heat the water was still intact. As you alluded to any bronze left about would have been scavenged over the subsequent centuries by various cultures which then took hold - much as today we have an industry devoted to recycling metals.
all the bronze in the world? think of the salvage value of all that bronze. imagine that some of that bronze ended up being endlessly recycled into the armor, helmets, weapons, grave goods, coins, jewelry, toys, nails of the next hundreds of years, maybe even up until until today. (i often think of gold this way, too... that some of our gold jewelry may even contain molecules from the Aztec, Spanish, California, El Dorado, Yukon, African gold finds and hoards ... constantly being recycled and passing from generation to generation!)

@@DigItWithRaven You have to get that fifth, because you get a discount when you build six or more.
Yes! I can't sleep at 3:30am, and the perfect video drops to entertain me!
What luck!!
A gigantic statue just standing more or less straight up makes so much more sense. Thanks for clearing this up.
Had bought into the idea that the statue straddled the harbor based on all the images. Never thought it out. Thank you.
Great is always.

I loved learning about the lore surrounding the location of this Colossus of Rhodes. Great video!
This is one of the things I always wish we knew exactly how it was built. Amazing for the time.
A series about ancient graves? Just hearing how grave traditions have changed over time and geography is cool. If thats something thst interests you

I didn't know you're Canadian! That so hype! Love the channel, your videos are so great. Hope you have a great 2025!

I’m so glad you’re back to posting such informative and interesting content!!
It's good to be back!! Glad you liked the video
Never has a face in art so clearly expressed the sentiment: "Oh no! The elastic has snapped and my hands are full!".
Raven knows a lot about the Colossus. That makes her a Rhodes scholar.

Yes, and it's not just a famous poem: it's on a plaque at the base of the statue.
Excellent, informative, and educational, missed your channel, Raven!
I'm currently reading your book and I love it. Thank you for writing it.
Very convincing arguments, Raven, well done. Great research.
Thank you!!
Thank you.

I wonder if they'll move the statue to moscow now? xD
It was a fun story. Sad it never actually existed.

Statue of Liberty? No, more like the Statue of Bleep You Buddy!
All that bronze may have been recycled to make weapons or maybe was scavenged to make cannons much later.

raven, i guess that is where the united states state, rhode island gets it name from?
I think we should replace the Statue of Liberty with one of Helios Mithras. Make him thicc. lol
