I have two friends to talk to anime about, but really only one, but really it's zero lol. Sounds weird I know. My one friend who used to keep up with seasonal stuff with me is just too busy to watch anime now. He rarely watches stuff. And the other isn't too keen on all the typical anime tropes we're used to, fan service, the loud yelling/over exaggeration (You know the classic HUHHHHHH trope they always do), etc... He only likes specific types of shows so there aren't many I can talk to him about.
I've tried anime forums but it's just not the same. It's kinda sad cause I have so many shows I would love to talk about, but there's just no one. I wish the boys here would talk about anime more even if I completely disagree with them on their takes on shows cause that's what makes it fun.

I really like the talk about learning languages, it is genuinely hard to learn another language, especially when you are not living somewhere forcing you to speak and read it constantly. English is my second language and I have never been to an all-english country, but my time getting engrossed in games, books, movies and the internet in general has pushed me into being really good, almost proficient in the language. If the whole media I have consumed would've been in chinese, then maybe I would have been fluent in chinese now. I think that a huge, incredibly giant step forward is starting to think in that language, instead of saying "I'm thinking of the word "apple" from english", start thinking about the words for "round, red, sweet, grown in trees" in japanese, you will get to a point of remembering the object and how it looks like. I think Chris Broad had a video about learning faster and he explained that instead of saying the english word and expecting someone else to know what you are talking about, you are better off describing it and the other person will realise fast enough for the conversation to continue, and I didn't put the dot's together that I have been basically doing the same with english for a long time.
Either way, good luck in further learning 🤗

Bro, you are literally me! I learned English the same way. I'd play a video game, somebody would say something and I wouldn't understand. But then they'd point at a thing and name it. I guess my brain just made a subconscious note about how that thing is called in English.
It's actually surprising how good you can get by 'learning' a language this way. I remember when I was younger, my classmates would have private tutors to teach them English, but I couldn't afford hiring a private tutor or going to cram school. Despite that, I now am the most fluent out of all my classmates.
I am currently trying to learn Russian this way. It'd be interesting to see if I can make it to work a second time.

Slang is another example that shows culture but in a temporal aspect as well- There’s an assumption that as a whole, people become linguistically stable (meaning they don’t pick up new slang or really change how they talk) when they become adults, so the slang that they use would be reflective of the culture when they were teens or young adolescents- this is called age-grading, and it mostly reflects an age group as a whole, not individuals.
You can also tell who is a native speaker and who is still learning the language with how they use slang- native speakers will be comfortable and use slang with ease in the right situations, because they understand the context in which they can use those terms. Meanwhile someone new to speaking the language will always talk slightly more formally or more standard because they don’t have that level of mastery over the language yet. (in sociolin class, we used the example of a younger person using the word ‘very’ rather than ‘so’ to emphasize something: ‘it was very good’ vs. ‘it was so good’)
Garnt also mentioned learning a whole history when speaking a language and I agree! There was the example earlier of English and French, but also if you consider different dialects- Quebec French sounds very different from European French because Quebec French is a reflection of the French used when the settlers first came to Canada, while European French underwent its own change through time- you could actually study the evolution of a word from the time those speakers separated and it’s really cool ^.^
I also agree with Joey when he was talking about speaking a language but not having the shared experiences a person native to the place where the language was spoken would have as well. I grew up speaking my parent’s language but I wasn’t born in that country, so there was a disconnect in how I used the language as well as my accent. Although I could communicate with my cousins, because there was no shared experience it felt a little alienating at times.
…sorry this was a long response, I really like linguistics aljdhfkaf
but tl;dr there was merit to what they said, although it’s literally only the tip of the iceberg

I wouldn't say frank herbert used made up terms, as someone who speaks arabic fluently and who read the books as a teenager many many years ago, I would say the names were some of the most captivating themes at the start of the novel for me at that age, because they are not like random words at all, to cite a few:
Gom Jabbar: Powerfull People. Powerful (Jabbar) People (Kom in classic arabic, Gom in most bedouin dialects)
Chai Khouloud: Eternal Creature. I don't remember if Chai being an evolution of Cheikh was canon, glossary? it was a long time ago, if it is it would mean Old Wise (Cheikh is the male term, Cheikha for female), but if it isn't it would be even better, because Chai means 'something' or 'creature' so literally, Creature (Chai) of Eternity (Khouloud).
But the one I always loved was Muaddib itself, because it tells you so much.
Muaddib comes from the Adab, which means literature, art but also good manners, Adab comes from the root verb Addaba which means to teach manners, a root verb with this transformation has usually a negative consonance to it , ***** in this case the transformation is Fa''ala, verb in arabic is called Fi'l, almost all words in the language can be extracted by fixed transformations and adding prefixes and suffixes of the 3 root syllables corresponding to F, ' and L in any verb, in Addaba the 3 root syllables are ADB, transformed by Fa''aLa it becomes ADDaBa, use ISTaF'ala and it becomes Istaadaba meaning showing good manners, and so on and so on, lol crash course in classical arabic, who asked?! *****, anyway the negativity comes because it carries the meaning of doing something into someone, but in this case given the root itself it also means that the someone doesn't have manners! So in Arabic Addaba is never usually used in positive terms, it conveys some kind of non peaceful teaching, lol. Then the subject is extracted, Mu'addib (Mufa'iil from Addaba), therefore "The one who teaches manners"!
For me the first time I read the books, I just stopped, why would he name him Mu'addib and not something normal like Mu'allim ('Allama root 'Ilm, science, knowledge) meaning teacher of knowledge, which is the regular way to say teacher or even Mudarriss (Darrassa, Darss, lecture, course), he goes for Mu'addib, I knew right there and then there was something very fishy about the guy! but I also loved the books and the author and the research and the fact that the words made sense because it gave the story a sense.
I also loved the movie, ending it here, I wasn't planning to write this much!
Keep up the good work. I usually have you in the background while eh... working too! 😅

Even though I’ve studied Chinese up till I was 17, I don’t think I can explain a concept that’s uniquely Chinese like what Garnt did with Thai, and he probably wasn’t even tested on Thai in school. Good to know that Joey loved watching Dune. I haven't read the book, but I got dragged out to see the movie (blind, knew nothing) on 3 separate occasions with 3 different friends. Was funny to hear the boys talk about needing other people to check your opinion with, because that was how I felt with Dune.
At first, I wasn't really sure if I liked it, and why. Eventually I kinda figured it out. It's a damn good movie, very well made. I liked the cast and it felt like the beginnings of a sci-fi epic story, but it didn't jump to the level where I'd rate the movie a solid 9/10 immediately. I was pretty slow figuring out that yes, it is good, I can conclude that I agree with my friends and the strangers online. I suppose being made to rewatch it 2 more times also helped me smooth out my thoughts.

1:43:50 It has been a long held believe of mine, that language and culture are so tightly interwoven, as language is the main medium and identification point for culture. This also means for me in particular that learning Japanese made me aware of Japanese culture.
This in turn made me aware of my own cultural features as a German including my own language. By learning Japanese I learned a lot about my own culture and language, especially in acknowledging the differences and commonalities. 💖
I would advice everybody to learn a language from a totally different part of the world because it opens your eyes for your own cultural feature set😆.

In VRchat I've encountered so many people that speak another language that have English as a second or third language that it is so wild to me. bullshit. language is a part of a culture even being the lingua franca, the idioms, the phrases, the slang etc. the everyday language usage and how words / concepts / emotion are expressed. its basically intertwined, if you learn english you learn some part of culture of the anglosphere

    • @s1llysushi

You don't think you learn the culture of it only because you don't realize how much cultural exposure you have had how readily available they are everywhere. And it is mostly thanks to American pop culture, the biggest US export, and now internet. English is still hard to learn in countries where those cultural exposure you had are not readily available such as Japan.

His take is so infuriating. It's like he just watched the 1st few episodes and said yep that's all there is. There is plenty of nuance especially in regards to the character interactions within the confines of the society. It's like no shit she is sympathetic but you get to see how the objects of her sympathiy care about how sympathetic she is. Because as sympathetic as she appears she doesn't really treat them different or change their situation. And they address that.
