No way!!! Amazing! I think that is such a cute name for a cat :) If you're interested in more Mochi footage, I made an update video here: ruclips.net/video/GONtBrkmtPc/видео.html
The Simple Environmentalist I hear ya’. Whereas you had some unused wood lying around, I have PVC from unrealized garden projects. And, in our area, we have regular trash pickup, but the next day is BIG stuff that the claw truck picks up. It’s amazing the building stuff you can find out by the street; even wooden fence that only needs the bottom 6 inches removed and it sometimes sands up like new, depending on the original quality.
@@freewaybaby Whatever works for each person!! I even made my compost out of bulk trash! Ps, I posted the cat tree update today if you're interested :)
I think it was about 2 years? we moved overseas so we couldn't ship it but we had it the whole time we were at this house and it was still in good shape!
@@TheSimpleEnvironmentalist Try E6000 glue when gluing metal and ceramics. It works great and has a better grip on slippery surfaces. Hot glue will eventually shrink and peel off of smooth things causing the surfaces you are gluing to separate.
It's been a while since we did this but we only had to buy hot glue and twine, so maybe $20? I mean, in theory we technically bought the cans and old wood though
That is a good question...I don't know precisely, but I would guesstimate about 100m? I could be totally off though. Sorry i forgot to take that measurement!!
it mean i guess technically you buy the cans full of food but they would otherwise be wasted so I saved them from the landfill. I bought hot glue, sure, but someone might already have that at home :)
Should just use pvc pipe, its sturdy and beats having to put together a bunch of pieces (cans) that will likely fall apart anyway. Can find it at your local home improvement store for $10-13 for a 10-20 foot (depending on what size you get) and they can cuz the sizes you need right there at the store (in lumber). Also pvc pipe has other fittings so if you wanted to do a totally different design or project you can glue (with pvc glue/primer in one also about $10). Also while your there you can check to see if they have left over lumber (typically sitting on it's own cart in lumber full of warped pieces or unused cut pieces), and then head over to flooring and check with carpet people to see if they have any remnants (unused cut pieces).
Just as a heads up hot glue will not stick/adhear to pvc, though if your just adding the rope and you sand the pvc (to give a rougher outside for glue to stick to) and wrap the rope tighter together than she did then there shouldn't be a problem. The way she wrapped her rope the cats will likely pull it right off the can with only a few tries.
@@TheSimpleEnvironmentalist Based on what I could find the only time PVC can be toxic is when your trying to melt it. Also every building and home (unless it's really old & out dated) use PVC for plumbing. That's water you drink, bathe, cook..etc with being carried by PVC. So unless your gonna try and melt it (which if u do good luck it's pretty thick) then it's perfectly safe. Crafters use it so much infact I just found out they make certain pieces (such as flat end cap) that won't work for plumbing but are specifically made for people who craft. I do love the concept of your idea though of reusing typical things you may have or throw away. The cans made me feel nervous though as they weren't structurally sound (easily break), and unless you spray them with some rust-resistant spray I'd be worried about rust being a problem as well. I know my two cats when they start chasing each other and jumping on things that they'd need something sturdier. I loved that you were thinking out of the box of new ideas though. :)
@@TheSimpleEnvironmentalist Hey! Random thought.. you know what would be a cool video along the lines of making it out of garbage items would be dumpster diving at bigger stores or wherever and finding random things to make it out of. Or random items from yard sales or places like Goodwill (oooh or dollar store items, love me those creative up-cycle dollar store videos). See like I said I like your concept behind your idea, & this idea one might have to go out of their home to get BUT it's still either free or cheap. And at the very least it would be entertaining to watch what items u find & use (like cloth dinner mats instead of carpet).
This was 90% upcycled, I don't see what you mean: cans that would have otherwise been trash, t-shirts and fabric that could not be donated (aka trash), wood that had no other purpose. The only thing that was brand new was the twine! It might not look sturdy but nearly a year later it is still standing. I know, it's not the best, but I am not an engineer or architect so it's alright for having no experience. It could have been worse lol

No way!!! Amazing! I think that is such a cute name for a cat :) If you're interested in more Mochi footage, I made an update video here: ruclips.net/video/GONtBrkmtPc/видео.html
I use PVC for lots of stuff....maybe you can replace the pillars with PVC, for more durability!
if I found some used I would! The goal was to make this almost entirely upcycled :)
@@TheSimpleEnvironmentalist wow another pvc/can comment... what was the harm in responding like this to me?
👍👍
thanks!
I'm not sure that hot glue is going to hold together on the posts. You need to put something physically through the cans to stop them coming apart.
no it worked
I mean cans could be useful, next time I would suggest putting weight in the cans somehow before gluing them together? like rocks? idk
perhaps! the idea, like i said in the video, was for this to be as low waste as possible so i did just that :)
@@TheSimpleEnvironmentalist i think it was a wonderful idea, absolutely not knocking ya :) i was just brainstorming 🥰
@@mads1864 oh yeah for sure! Just letting you know why I did it this way :) I got my new one second hand!
Do you think pringles cans would do instead of real cans? 🥺😭
maybe? might be a lot of weight to bear for that cardboard
Can I ask how long it's lasted?
I think it was about 2 years? we moved overseas so we couldn't ship it but we had it the whole time we were at this house and it was still in good shape!
I need to do this for Sir KiKi.
It was so fun to make and it's so cool knowing she likes something I MADE!
The Simple Environmentalist I’m going to use the can idea and make a scratching post since he already has a box.
@@luqicharmz love that idea!
My idea was to use rivet gun instead of glue to connect cans together
You know, that sounds like a really good idea! I wish I had thought of that!
I loved your idea♥ , what type of glue to use to glue the cans?
Just regular hot glue!
@@TheSimpleEnvironmentalist Try E6000 glue when gluing metal and ceramics. It works great and has a better grip on slippery surfaces. Hot glue will eventually shrink and peel off of smooth things causing the surfaces you are gluing to separate.
@@vickiechandler3112 i'll keep that in mind for next time, thanks!
How much wasbthe total cost of the build?
It's been a while since we did this but we only had to buy hot glue and twine, so maybe $20? I mean, in theory we technically bought the cans and old wood though
Pringles chip tubes might have been better to use. And contact cement or epoxy
except i don't eat pringles. this was a zero waste video anyway :)
How many meters of rope you used per leg?
That is a good question...I don't know precisely, but I would guesstimate about 100m? I could be totally off though. Sorry i forgot to take that measurement!!
Time to change that blade on that saw….
guess so, we borrowed it from a friend!
great i would of used duct tape to hold the cans together but over all its great
Yeah that probably would have helped reinforce for sure!
@@TheSimpleEnvironmentalist and another can comment...
Then the cat only scratches on just the yard part
yup, that ended up happening haha
don't forget to check out the update video :) ruclips.net/video/GONtBrkmtPc/видео.html
should of padded before you glued them down
Padded the cans? I did pad the wood!
Meow Meow
she's so cute!
Could have used cardboard also
not that sturdy though
make a plane
what
Cans won't hold up for fat catz like mine. Great idea though for kittens
They actually do hold up for her even though she is full grown now! Check out the update here: ruclips.net/video/GONtBrkmtPc/видео.html
For “environmental reasons” maybe don’t use spray paint? 🤔
maybe i'll do what i want. consider the fact that this video is nearly 3 years old and people can change
So not for free
it mean i guess technically you buy the cans full of food but they would otherwise be wasted so I saved them from the landfill. I bought hot glue, sure, but someone might already have that at home :)
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
It doesn’t look very safe tbh, I am worried about your cats!
I only have one and she was a 5 lb kitten at the time. No need to worry, you don't know what it's actually like
Should just use pvc pipe, its sturdy and beats having to put together a bunch of pieces (cans) that will likely fall apart anyway.
The point was to build this from trash, though, and not new items and pvc can be toxic :(
@@TheSimpleEnvironmentalist Based on what I could find the only time PVC can be toxic is when your trying to melt it.
Might need e6000 glue
lost me at paint
hahahaha okay ehn thanks for the comment anyway
I would not call this up-cycled lol. And this is not even sturdy and a waste of materials. Good attempt horrible execution.
It could have been worse lol

whatever you think, to each their own, this worked super well for my tiny cat :)
SCARY WATCHING THIS GUY USE POWER TOOLS.........THIS IS A SURE WAY TO LOSE A FINGER OR TWO
nope we all have 10 fingers still ahahahah he is literally a professional
I will replace them cans with cardboard leftovers from any diy shop . Also instead of using t-shirts to wrap the tree , i will go to a carpet shop and buy left over pieces. With less than 10£ you will get loads .
okay cool
