Despite being a New Yorker the infamous Dan Sickles donated his amputated leg to the Army's Medical Museum in Fort Detrick, Maryland. He even visited it every year on the 2nd of July

Also - On 5 Jun 1861 during the Skirmish at New Bridge, VA, Battery B of the 1st MD Light Artillery defended the union retreat by silencing the guns of the 1st Maryland Artillery, CSA. Brother against brother.

Having lived in MD all my life I never realized how much of a huge part of the civil war the state really played. In school your just taught in school they were simply put a border state or made to just sound like a neutral state. But that's the farthest thing from the truth. Theres so much more to it an so many circumstances an factor to try an explain it that simply.

me too. Being a Civil War buff and Marylander ( Rockville), I couldn't be prouder for those young men who fought and died of both armies. You won't see that nowadays.

A true tragedy of the war. My great-great-great grandfather was with the Maryland 1st Regiment Eastern Shore Infantry (Union) on Culp's Hill.
