British guy here, the UK certainly _did_ have a reputation for poor food, especially by European standards. To be honest, looking back at what was common food in the 80s, we kind of deserved that reputation. It's not really true any more, you can get pretty good grub here now. We still have a bit of a propensity for boiling vegetables too often though.
The change made sense. There's little or nothing 'opal' about them- they're not translucent and they're uniformly square. Whilst there are no stars, let alone starbursts, in 'Starburst', it does kind of fit as a metaphor for the explosion of taste in your mouth and they're bright.
I read they were originally M&M's Fruit Chewies in the USA, theyre nothing like M&Ms! However the Opal Fruits name is being brought back over here, for how long I'm not sure.

So, Schwimmer loves himself some Reese's peanut butter cups and not the Cadbury? Always liked Reese's but always preferred other types of chocolate, although it is a sold candy.

Skittles are also from the uk. Basically skittles contain little round pieces of starburst (formerly opal fruits) covered in a corresponding coloured sugar shell coating.

The Reeses chocolate is horrible. Nothing with peanut butter can be bad IMHO but that poor excuse for chocolate almost ruins it for me
