    You can't imagine how bad some of those 'pitches' were, I remember West Ham's pitch having hardly a blade of grass and sand being mixed in with the mud and then flattened to look presentable at kick off. Within minutes of kick off there were 'no go' areas of the pitch as the ball would become stuck in the mud. Amazingly the players actually managed to play some watchable football. George Best was 'the' expert on a bad pitch, he used the mud to his advantage wrong footing the opponent, his brain was always one step ahead, anticipating their next move. If he had been able to play today l'm sure he would still be a sensation, it was his speed, control and football brain that made him unique. It's a shame that many of his games were not filmed, they just didn't have that many cameras to cover all the games back then. Today's films only give a glimpse of his skill.

      Ur comment was absolutely spot on..Ur typical Pitch over Hackney Marshes(in E.London)were just a good..where as today they're running around on Plush Carpet.

      Mike wa, thats true mike. That park that we just watched there was in the worse condition i have ever seen in any english old first division ground, at white hart lane. It was a potatoe field mud swamp park. At one stage you see george best getting the ball on what looked like straw wich was about 16 yards long and 12 yards wide. I was waiting on horses coming on next. It was really pathetic, and it was only into november. By febuary that park would need to be returfed again. And that was so hard to do, to lay the turfs of grass by 6ft by 6ft would take all day and night and then you need to get it as near perfect as you can wich is so hard as bits stick up all over the park. Teams did try it back then and had to lift it again the next day as after the tractor had rolled them at least 3 times to flatten the turf it was still unsafe to play on. So they had to lift what they had laid and just put bits of sand around the goal area wich helps the mud not feel as bad to play on if spinkled on right. But the parks should have got a two week break at xmas back then, that would have helped alot. And am always for natural grass to play on not false grass that never gets muddy. You wont get a better game of football than on a great natural grass park at the start of the season and the middle as well. Btw the reason most of the parks in 1970 and 80s were this bad was becouse they never got a break all season? If spurs played away then the reserves played at home plus thats not counting during the week. They parks were played on every single week. If the reserves had a park of there own the big ground parks would never look as bad to play on. But with george best scoring goals like that its no wonder he took half the park mud into the changing room after the game.

    Best was brilliant on terrible pitches, and when hard nasty tackling was allowed. imagine what displays he'd be capable of today on these brilliant lush pitches , and with the ref protection from tackling, .He'd never lose the ball, and score at least 3 times as many goals. a True GREAT talent of the game. G.BEST rip

    • @tigerarmyrule
      @tigerarmyrule 5 лет назад +8

      I agree Chris. Look at 2.16 here. Best is hacked down. Messi for all his fabulous talent - and he is fabulously talented and let no one deny it - never gets tackled like that. Today that is a sending off straight away. George dealt with conditions and refereeing standards no modern player has to cope with. Pele, Di Stefano, Cruyff, Messi may be greater players in ways but no one has ever had more undiluted talent with the ball at his feet. The way he injected instant urgency and speed is wonderful. The other thing was his sheer natural charisma. You couldn't take your eyes off him if the ball was within 15 yards of him. The young have not seen him but those old enough to have seen both George and Cristiano Ronaldo know who United's greatest ever player was.

      tigerarmyrule I'm old enough to have seen both and while it's true Best had to deal with terrible pitches, he didn't have to cope with organised defences, pressing, no time to think, 90 mile an hour football. I'd say both Messi and Ronaldo are on a different planet to George Best

      @@tigerarmyrule Good comment!,There's just no comparison!
      And as fantastic a player as Messi is,I really couldn't see him pulling it off(week in/week out)in the EPL,and certainly not then,with each team possessing at least 2 players whose primary goal was to stop u (by foul means or fair).That was football then,today we have "Xbox 19"style,with virtual reality tackling!!

    • @jerryoshea3116
      @jerryoshea3116 5 лет назад +1

      @@ruthsmart2566 Just a quick comment.
      The tactics are just a mask for a lack of overall abilty!
      .In those days u had larger poorer familys,where football was the main priority,and the only avenue out of their drudgery for every kid(just like u see in some "third world" country's now)So when someone turned "Pro"that meant he was of a really high standard because every kid back then wanted 2b a Pro Footballer!
      Tactics will be never "trump" a team filled with naturally skillful players..It may pose problems of course,but 8 out of 10 times"class"will dominate and prevail!

      @Restart 2020 If he'd looked after himself he would have played right through the 1970s at the top and would probably have gone to the World Cup with Northern Ireland in 1982. The best of Best was quite a narrow window - 1966 to 1968.

      @Restart 2020 I saw him when he played for Fulham. It was like his heart wasn't in it. I think Marsh had moved on by then. He was still the best player on the pitch and at least I can say I saw him. But if you see the videos of him at his peak he was unstoppable.

    Tavy@ that really was some goal by best. He was so brave and even had that great speed of thought to run into a packed defence then take it on hes chest and knew to let the ball stick to the mud to then have the tenacity, composure, and skill to stick it in the back of the net with the outside of hes heavy boot!!! He was the greatest ever! Could you imagine messi doing what best just did there? With no protection, on a heavy mud swamp potatoe field, and with a much heavier ball. About 4, 5 times the weight of todays balls plus heavier again on a rain soaked park!!! A just couldnt imagine messi doing what best just did there. No chance! A just had to look at that goal at least another 3 or 4 times. Best was the greatest player in the world between 1966 to 1971,72. If he looked after himself better and trainend the way he did before he started going missing, and into his thirtys could you imagine how much more he had to offer us till he was 37 easy. Then he couldve played between defence and midfield till he was 42 or more! He wouldv been miles better than pele. There was still so much to give. Ye wont see another player ever who was quite like george best !!!!!!!!!!!! R.I.P GEORGE

      The ball weighs the same now as it did then, the only time it was heavier was if the ball got wet. You clearly need to watch more of Messi! (I am a massive Best fan, but I'm pretty sure even Best would be amazed by Messi.)

      In no Universe is George Best better than Pele. Or Maradona. Or Messi. Or Ronaldo Phenomeno. Or Ronaldinho. And the list goes on..Pele was miles better than him. At the 66 World Cup Pele on one leg with his weaker foot , when he was hacked against Portugal, was setting up his team mates with passes, even with one leg he was better than George Best ever was. I am glad these old footages of Best exist. He was hyped to the max by the British/English media and these Best vs... highlight reels is bringing that to light...
