Lantau Peak | BEST WALKS

  • There’s an easy and a hard way to ascend Hong Kong’s second tallest peak. I opted for the cable car that gets you half way. After a quick stop in Ngong Ping to see the Big Buddha statue, it’s a steep two-hour climb up for lunch at the top of the mountain. Allow time to take in the panoramic sweeping coastal views. There are paths in every direction for the walk home. A long path through to Mui Wo, a southern route past the Shek Pik reservoir to Tung Wan or a shortcut back to Tung Chung. With the cable car not starting before 10AM you will need to be fast to take the longer routes.
Start at the cable car from Tung Chung to Ngong Ping. Walk through the village past the Big Buddha and onto the wisdom path until you see signs for the peak. From there continue along the Lantau trail until you reach Tung Chung road where you can get a bus back to Tung Chung.

Great video. I think driving trailhead between sunset peak and Lantau peak is easier though, since it's not nearly as steep. Anyway I did exactly what you did. The cable car views and the Budddha statue are WELL worth it!
Maybe in January it's possible to do it in 30 minutes, but like in the video it took me 2 hours ish in the June heat/humidity. Forget about what alltrails says, this is NOT a moderate climb and squarely fits in the "hard" category.

Delightful video! I'm going tomorrow and was wondering if you experienced any sort of trouble flying your drone over the Big Buddha or those mointains shown in the video. Did you require any special permission?i heard they are really flexible in HK about drone flying...Thnk you so much for sharing this amazing footage!

+Oni Rico Sorry for the late reply. I don't think you can fly the drone over the big Buddha as it is within a no fly zone around the airport.

Nice video. We were out in Hong Kong a few months ago and did some hiking. We went and hiked Dragon's Back but I must say the views from this video looked a lot nicer. Wish I had heard of this hike before we went out there. Are you still planning on doing more episodes?
