Murray Cod fishing using cheese for bait

  • I went and spent a lovely quiet evening on the bank of the Campaspe River, trying to catch a Murray Cod using cheese for bait. This was the first time I had ever bait fished at this location, so I wasn't sure how it would turn out.
    While I was there I also threw in a collapsible bait trap (shrimp net), to see if it was a good location to source live bait as well.

    There used to be a commercial here with the catch phrase "O, the power of cheese". Catching a fish within the first 10 minutes is so satisfying. Those hawks sure had something going on. With such a good shrimp population, there's probably something big eating them!

    • @RKJFishing
      @RKJFishing  5 лет назад

      The only issue with catching a fish so fast is that it's usually the only one you get! Sadly that was the case, but it's still good to get one. Next time I'll use the shrimp as bait, I might get more action!

    Nice fish man!! Surprising how man different species will eat cheese!

      Thank you very much! He was small but hopefully I find some monsters soon, they can grow up to 65"! It's mostly cod here that will take cheese I think, maybe an occasional silver perch

    Another great vid.
    Hoping my casting gets as accurate as yours and robbiefishing.
    Great explanation about knowing the depth.
    I've never fished for Murray Cod but will travel some and give it a go at some stage. I noticed when you were showing your bait with the marks on it that you didn't have the point or barb exposed. What is the logic behind this and does it make any difference to hooking up?
    Thanks in advance for any reply.

      Thanks so much Brett! Casting accuracy improves slowly with loads of practice haha. Just between you and me, I might have edited out a couple of bad casts LOL. Because the cheese is soft I can leave the point buried just inside it, and because Cod tend to strike aggressively the hook will have no issue pushing through the cheese and into the fish. You can expose it as well if you wanted to, but I think that the more of the hook is still inside the cheese, the better chance it has of staying on there when casting.

    great vid mate. just a question, what lures and sizes of lures do you use for yellas and do you cast in and around snags like cod?

    • @RKJFishing
      @RKJFishing  5 лет назад

      For Yellas I like spinnerbaits or large inline spinners the best, but a size 3 stump jumper or something similar works well also. They do tend to hang around logs like Cod do, but they are also attracted to fast moving water. I usually pick them up in the slow water that sits right next to the main current

    Good video! Sure got enough sinkers on? Prob way more than I'd use. Is the river currenty or not really? I have tried cheese before all I think I caught on it was carp, turtles and silver perch.....

    • @RKJFishing
      @RKJFishing  5 лет назад

      Thanks Les! The current is stronger than usual because of an environmental flow release from Lake Eppalock recently. Even then I like to be able to put tension on my line when using a paternoster rig so I can ensure the bait stays up off the bottom, and those sinkers are probably smaller than they look on the video lol. I haven't heard of carp being caught with cheese before, that's interesting!
