  • Omar Hakim walked us through one of his favorite warmups, the "paradiddle pyramid" at PASIC last year.

Omar - humble, emphatic, honest, wise, no BS ... a true master and human being. I encountered him in person a few times while he was in Boston ...

    Very cool..
I like 2 paradiddle diddles & a single paradiddle, then switch to left lead.

I remember when I starting playing drums over 20 years ago, I got a Roland td7 and the kit came with a DVD that had Omar on it. I Watched his playing on that DVD repeatedly in absolute awe. One of the true masters of the craft. ❤

And here I thought I had built the paradiddle pyramid though not as tall. Saw Omar as a young man in ‘75 with Weather Report and I was mesmerized. After all these years what scared me most was he says the SAME thing I’ve said to my students.

Those were not clean/high accents and clean low unaccented/ghost notes, like for example Chaffee would teach you to play or Kim Plainfield, BUT Omar Hakim is a legend by the colors and spirit imbuing his playing and the All-Star/played with everyone career he had and is still having. The lesson here is play like yourself and do not try copy other drummers even on your practice pad. Much love Omar❤

Took me a long time to figure out what he's saying-- he's starting with a single paradiddle little and then he's adding to the then .paradiddle, pa paradiddle, pa pa parsdiddle , pa pa pa para didle etc. In other words he's displacing the paradiddles by single beat additions and subtractions

There’s music in the way he plays this. Some accents are more subdued than others. Big difference than playing only a two volume - loud, soft - interpretation which sounds sterile and uninteresting.
