A 5/32 drill bit is the size you’ll need for the smaller hole for your liquid culture lids for your gas exchange and a 1/2” Forstner Bit will give you a really clean hole even in the metal Ball Jar lids. I place them onto a piece of wood and then drill them. Works perfectly. Regular 1/2” drill bits will mangle your lids.

If you drill a hole in the lid with a micropore filter over it. Do you still have to loosen the lid while pressure sterilizing and wrap the lid in foil?
I've found the two piece really needs tape (painter's works fine) to keep them together. If you ever G2G, having them come apart is a massive issue for doing quick transfers. I do 1x 1/4" drill with two micropore tape in X pattern
Bumping my comment cuz I’m sure you’re busy and shroomery has no answers 😂 do I cover with foil in pressure cooker? Do I tighten all the way for pressure cooker and loosen only afterwards? Thanks 🙏
Is a hole with microspore tape over it enough for adequate gas exchange for grain jars? I tried the syringe filters but the mycelium choked and stalled. They're only good for LC. So far the flipped lid Tek has worked but I've lost so many jars to contam it's getting frustrating

So when u upgrade to a flow hood are u gonna purchase or diy?? RR on shroomery has had a series 1 flowhood for over 10 years from fungiperfect. Its 1000$ but I think its worth the investment
I'm not sure why people say that an unmodified lid won't provide enough GE. If you look at the hole under that micro pore tape, it's really not a very big surface area. It wouldn't take a very much to make that same surface area but spread around the jar instead of in one single spot. I will say though that using unmodified lids makes me a bit nervous since there's nothing filtering large particles out of the air. So I have a tub that I sterilize and put my grain jars in to colonize.
The plastic lids are not airtight though, right? Since they can be used in the freezer, and the contents of the jar expand when they freeze, the air escapes through the threading. There's no gasket. Maybe I'm overthinking it. Have you ever had a problem with those plastic lids for LC?
I’ve had holes in my previous lids but I tried the unmodified lid gel this time...once I inoculate do I still leave the lids flipped over and loose? Also do I keep the foil on after like I’ve seen in one of the previous videos
Can you place the liquid culture leds in the pressure cooker while their modified, is there anything specific you need to do for it to work? Is it possible to use the liquid culture leds as for the use of grain spawn? That way you avoid ever opening the leds and contamination.
Yes you totally can use the LC lids for your grain jar and innoculate with a syringe to avoid opening it up. I just loosen the lid a quarter turn when going into pressure cooker and tighten it when I'm done and I'm taking it out of the pressure cooker.
Do you use a specific autoclavable syringe filter or do you just buy typical syringe filters that you may find on Amazon for cheap? I had 24 jars half with un modified lid and half with syringe filters in injection ports. I bought cheap ones off Amazon and my jars were slow colonizing and I cracked the lids and they sped up with the rest of jars in a couple days. So I am wondering if the autoclave may have plugged or melted the filters because they were cheap? Wish I could post pics on here I'm a proud beginner lol!
I would say that’s probably your problem. I just experienced the same thing with this cold snap I’m having in my part of the country. New England. Several things can stall out your jars. Wrong temperature, your grains or BRF are not hydrated enough, poor gas exchange, or a contaminant. I’m hoping for your sake and my sake for that we just need to turn the heat up. I just put a space heater over by jars last night when I noticed this happening. I am currently on my first growth and learning as you are.. I am telling you this because I am not a experienced grower. The information I just gave you I read from a reliable source. The plastic lids don’t have sealing rings inside right? If you drill a hole in the lid with a micropore filter over it. Do you still have to loosen the lid while pressure sterilizing and wrap the lid in foil?

I loosen mine and place foil over. I use one hole with poly fill. The foil protects the poly fill and prevents excess water going in.

Loose lids in the pressure cooker and after if there’s no breathing port at the top of the lid. And foil during the sterilization process.
