    A 5/32 drill bit is the size you’ll need for the smaller hole for your liquid culture lids for your gas exchange and a 1/2” Forstner Bit will give you a really clean hole even in the metal Ball Jar lids. I place them onto a piece of wood and then drill them. Works perfectly. Regular 1/2” drill bits will mangle your lids.

    Suggestion! Get a cheap wood burner from a hobby store to melt the plastic holes. We use them all the time in the reptile world to cut clean holes in tubs to add ventilation, etc. Works great and you don't need to keep heating it up with a lighter. Just plug it in, wait a few minutes and you're good to go. And they only cost a few bucks. 🙂 Of course, a nail works in a pinch.😉 Thanks for the great videos!

    I'm not sure why people say that an unmodified lid won't provide enough GE. If you look at the hole under that micro pore tape, it's really not a very big surface area. It wouldn't take a very much to make that same surface area but spread around the jar instead of in one single spot. I will say though that using unmodified lids makes me a bit nervous since there's nothing filtering large particles out of the air. So I have a tub that I sterilize and put my grain jars in to colonize.

    The plastic lids are not airtight though, right? Since they can be used in the freezer, and the contents of the jar expand when they freeze, the air escapes through the threading. There's no gasket. Maybe I'm overthinking it. Have you ever had a problem with those plastic lids for LC?

I bought cheap ones off Amazon and my jars were slow colonizing and I cracked the lids and they sped up with the rest of jars in a couple days. • @michaellangshaw1521
      @michaellangshaw1521 4 года назад

      I would say that’s probably your problem. I just experienced the same thing with this cold snap I’m having in my part of the country. New England. Several things can stall out your jars. Wrong temperature, your grains or BRF are not hydrated enough, poor gas exchange, or a contaminant. I’m hoping for your sake and my sake for that we just need to turn the heat up. I just put a space heater over by jars last night when I noticed this happening. I am currently on my first growth and learning as you are.. I am telling you this because I am not a experienced grower. The information I just gave you I read from a reliable source. That being said I am 100% positive those are 4 reasons why jars will stall out once they started colonizing. There could be other reasons but those are the 4 majors that I learned. Maybe somebody else can chime in. Good luck, be safe, and be well. ✌🏻💚🍄🤯

    • @RunescapeElijah6578
      @RunescapeElijah6578 4 года назад

      Colonization temp ranges for optimal growth are between 75F-80F, higher leads to contamination running amok and too low will make them stall.

    The plastic lids don’t have sealing rings inside right? Are you not worried about contamination when allowing gas exchange for the grain jars via the loosened lid rather than being filtered through a hole w/ filter patch/poly?
    Just watched your oat tek video and was also curious if you need to worry about contamination being sucked into the jars as they cool since these pressure cookers dont vacuum seal as they cool down?

    Thanks for the great vid! I do notice a lot of respected expert growers still recommend polyfill or SFD lids for grain jars. Do you not see any additional contam when using unmodified loosened lids during colonization?

    i have been using the green syringe filters 22micron for Gas Exchange port- i see you use a loose lid technique. some of my jars have stalled. ... do you think the loose lid tek is superior PG Sensei?

    If your lids melt when yu poke hole in them with the nail, how can yu sterilize them in pressure cooker?. Wouldn't they melt aswell
    Serious question

    Guys I had a question after watching. With modified liquid culture lids are you able to pressure cook the jars with them in their modified form with injection port/ filer patch already installed as long as the jar is covered with foil in the PC????
