I am nearly 60 years old and I can remember being in class at school when the teacher asked each of us what we wanted to be when we were older. You had answers like Policeman. Builder. Fisherman etc but when it came to me, I stood up and said "I want to be Marc Bolan" Everybody laughed of course, but I was dead serious. Marc was the coolest musician out there at the time. His death was tragic, but he left a trail of music behind that I still enjoy to this day. Legend. R.I.P

Seemed a very cool guy.
Everyone who's ever met Marc Bolan says he was the nicest guy in the world. No one ever has a bad word to say about him. He was just a friendly, wonderful guy.
That might be the most innocuous description of a band I’ve ever heard, let alone T-Rex. They were an absolute monster of a band. Maybe would’ve given Led Zeppelin a run for their money, if MB didn’t exit.
20th Century Boy was released in 1973 as a single. I was 16 and my mom brought me back the 45 from a trip to the UK before it was released in North America. I wore it out.
T.Rex were phenomenal - their lead singer played guitar and wrote all their songs. I met him many times just before his tragic death in 1977 and they say never meet your heroes but he didn’t disappoint in the least - he was such a lovely, generous, beautiful human being. You need to listen to his Metal Guru Jeepster, and Telegram Sam as well as album tracks such as Mambo Sun, Rip Off, Chariot Choogle, Rabbit Fighter - it’s a rabbit hole that keeps on giving. Some of the most exciting music of the 1970’s.

Bowie told a funny as hell story about how they met--painting their then-manager's office, lol, when, as Bowie put it, "WSe were nothing--not even a tadpole known, just two unknowns with huge ambitions." It canbe heard on VH!'s storytellers. Sorry, can't recall which song Bowie was introducing with this story, but ANYTHING where Bowie (or Bolan, I'm sure, from the bits I've heard) talks about ANYTHING is well worth a listen!
It was renamed 'Bang a Gong' in the US only, due to dome copyright issue, in the rest of the World, including the UK, it was called 'Get it On', the original and intended name. :)
I can not stand the Power Station version. I wish radio would play T.Rex's version instead. I hear the cover way too often (at least the first few seconds, until I can find the button to turn it off).

If you love bangers, you need to do something from THE WHO's Live at Leeds. Young Man Blues, My Generation, Amazing Journey/Sparks, Magic Bus and more are ALL BANGERS. Nobody played with such precision and power at that time.
I've been on dance floors with Millenials hearing this for the first time and they started rocking out, so this is a multigenerational banger! The guitar is so fuzzy it's like rolling around on a plush carpet, playing with a puppy (or kitten). Big Banger Energy!
I have loved Marc Bolan and T.Rex since 1980 when I discovered a British import LP called The Unattainable T.Rex. I promptly joined the Bramley’s UK based fan club. Marc was a megastar all over the world, except the US. The US wasn’t into glam rock and Marc was the originator. Amazing talent and charismatic performer who continues to have a huge influence. The Electric Warrior and The Slider are must listen to albums. His singles were so cool too. Love his otherworldly Tolkeinesque Tyrannosaurus Rex days too. He had multiple careers really.
It's amazing that their whole catalog is almost forgotten except for "Bang a Gong". This is just as good, and there's much more. When they finally went into the Hall of Fame, I tried to convince myself that maybe Marc Bolan was just a comet and there wasn't enough work to justify the induction. But the more correct analysis, IMO is that Bolan was SUCH a comet that the Hall was 20 years too late.
I always say this is one of the numbers I want played at my memorial. When people ask “what’s your theme song you want to play when you enter a room?” This is it.
There is sooo much more where that came from. Their singles alone in the charts were massive hits again & again, and their albums went stratospheric . I was a teenager when T.Rex emerged onto the music scene. They were absolutely huge !!! T.Rextasy !!! Marc Bolan was 'the' pin up Glam Rock guy along with David Bowie ..They were best friends. Marcs other close friends were Ringo Starr & Elton John. His stage presence was of this stunningly beautiful guy. Even if you were straight you could not ignore that fact. I have every single he released on vinyl + every official album release & a few best of cd's and remastered albums. If you only ever play 2 albums ... "Electric Warrior" & "The Slider" are both Masterpieces. Every track !!! Checkout even the B sides to singles ... like "Thunderwing" now a bonus track on The Slider cd. ...It was a B side but what a track !! Hope you get to play more. You're going find bigger bangs !
It should be noted that the producer of this song was Tony Visconti - the man behind the majority of T-Rex and David Bowie’s work. He also worked with the Moody Blues, Gentle Giant, Badfinger, Sparks and Thin Lizzy. Often overlooked he is a genius producer and a vicious bass player if you check out the album the Man Who Sold the World by David Bowie, you will hear one of the dirtiest bass guitar sounds ever recorded.
Spent many happy times cruising with the gang in my brothers Ford Fairlane, T Rex blaring from the speakers, headed to the local hangout. The 70s were the best. My brother loved music, he would approve this track reaction!
My 1st concert was T.Rex at the Lyceum in London back in 1975, the only surviving member is the drummer Bill Legend who now lives in the Rocky Mountains, he used to live near me in the UK during the 70’s, I am still on contact with him.
Got to see T. Rex live about 1974. It's a shame, they were opening for Guess Who on a tour here in the States even though they were HUGE in Europe. However, before the show, waiting in line to get in, the conversation up & down the line was that most were there to see T. Rex. Marc Bolan was this elfin, small man who exuded major sexual energy & charisma. He was so uninhibited & irresistible. And talented. Rest in peace, Bolan baby. You made an impact that still echoes. Thanks, Andy & Alex. Please do more! 💙☮💙☮💙☮💙☮💙☮💙☮💙
Wow, so glad you got to this one. Loved T-Rex back in the day. I played this so loud my mother’s pewter dish rolled off the shelf and broke a ceramic floor tile. Needless to say, she was not pleased.
I listened to this so much in my teens, I forget how hard it slaps. I’m in my thirties, but I was obsessed with british glam rock back then and T Rex and Bowie were my absolute favourite. Whenever I’m feeling down, I can always count on T Rex to turn my mood around. Glad you guys enjoyed it.
You hit the nail on the head when you mentioned the charisma. Marc Bolan was my first rock hero and I was lucky enough to see him just before he died in 1977. I can’t say it’s the greatest show I’ve seen but for pure charisma there were very few to come close to Marc. He had the whole audience in the palm of his hand and that included several punk rockers who had come to see The Damned who were the support act. Great review guys.
I was also lucky enough to see Marc & T. Rex on that final 1977 UK tour. It was at the Rainbow Theatre in London on March 18 with the Damned. Even though punk was huge at the time (I was 15 and into rock) I was there to see Marc and the new T. Rex, which were a really great band. Most of the people there were there to see Marc, judging by how loud they were. I’ve been to countless concerts, and the reaction from the crowd when he walked onstage was similar to the reaction Bowie or McCartney would get. He had lost weight and looked really great, his skin was glowing like someone who was in great health (the opposite of Keith Richards). He made a joke that he was glad we all came to see him instead of “the Bay City fucking Rollers” who were also playing in London the same night. The sound system was epically loud, but crystal clear. Watching him that night it seemed like he was having the time of his life, it was such a shock when he was killed because you just couldn’t imagine someone that filled with a lust for life was now dead. His tv show Marc had some episodes filmed that hadn’t aired yet when he died, but they were shown a month later, I just couldn’t bare to watch them. Luckily I can now because all the episodes of “Marc” are on RUclips. I recently found a recording from that March 1977 show at the Rainbow on RUclips, and it’s just as great as I remember it. He was really cranking on guitar that night. If you do a search for “Marc Bolan Hang Ups live” you’ll find it. The picture of Marc that’s in the thumbnail for the video wasn’t taken at the Rainbow show where he wore black leather pants and a red and black long sleeve shirt.
So glad you're finally on the T. Rex train, amazing. Please check out the title cut from the album The Slider. The song, The Slider, is breathtakingly beautiful.
Woo! Been begging you guys to do this track for a couple years. One of the raunchiest guitar opens of all time! And so timeless (except for title). Could've been released yesterday. Thanks!
@@mrDK1951 Now THAT is a good call! And then soon after the "Hear me singin', soft and low..." part is done SO sweetly with the plaintive vocals and the organ, and then the samba influenced finale, complete with sax--what a song!
It's worth catching the cover by supergroup Power Station which featured Robert Palmer on vocals, Tony Thompson from Chic on drums, John Taylor from Duran Duran on bass and Andy Taylor from Duran Duran on guitar. It's funky and so dirty. Highly recommended.
I´d actually go so far as to say this is the best rock´n roll riff ever. Two notes. Some rythm. The right sound. I know, there are tons of really, really good riffs out there - but this one just got everything. :D
Marc was a special guy. He seldom had bridges in his songs -- the structure was usually very consistently conservative. But the verses and choruses were often so good they carried the song.
I was a huge T Rex fan in my early to mid teens, which coincided with their heyday. Still deeply appreciate Marc Bolan's raw energy and sexy, glamorous vibe, not to mention his musical talent. More T Rex please! Also Slade, they were killing it back then.
Marc was the king of Glam Rock! Seriously a HUGE star in Britain in the early 70s. He was brilliant and died young and he had a healthy friendship/competition with David Bowie (they were best friends). Bowie took care of Bolan's girlfriend and infant son (long story, but they had no money) for years after Marc's death. He paid the boy's tuition to college.
T Rex was my favorite band when I was young, highly underrated. Marc Bolan wasn't technically great on guitar, but he had fabulous tone and a very distinctive style that you recognize immediately. You guys should play Ballrooms of Mars, where he mentions Alan Freed, Bob Dylan, John Lennon and others. The guitar will blow you away.
Marc Bolan did a track with a super long guitar solo in 1970, before the group became T.Rex. It's on "A Beard Of Stars" album by Tyannosausus Rex in 1970...."Elemental Child" His guitar riffs alone are legendary. He had so many !
How lovely that a tune from when I was 10 has such an effect on you both FIFTY YEARS LATER !! Wowza !! Form is temporary but class is permanent 👍 👍🏴
My Glam tribute opens with this song and segue into Bang A Gong. Background vocals provided by Flo and Eddie from The Turtles ("Happy Together"). They appeared on a couple of T-Rex albums.
In 1977 Marc Bolan got his own tv show in England called “Marc”, which mostly him performing his songs live, and musical guests who performed their own songs. It a huge hit show in the U.K. and Europe, although it was never shown in the US. I used to watch it when I was a kid in England, with the tv cranked up. In September of 1977 Marc was killed in a car accident, having filmed the last episode of the show a few days earlier with his guest and great friend David Bowie. A month after Marc’s death there were a few more shows that aired, and it was impossible for most of us to watch it. He was such a live wire and so full of life, it was nearly impossible to imagine that he was dead. You can watch all the episodes of “Marc” on RUclips for free. Had he lived into the 80’s he would’ve been a huge star in America because he was perfect for MTV: very visual and really rocking. To this day, if you go to a wedding party in the U.K., it’s pretty common for the dj to play “20th Century Boy” to get everyone up and dancing.
"Chilkdren of the Revolution" next? You should also hit "Ride a White Swan", "Metal Guru", "Jeepster", "Hot Love", "Telegram Sam" and "Solid Gold Easy Action" eventually.

Mr. Bolan was truly a dandy (of the underworld). So many great tracks. Jeepster should be next. RIP Marc.
I always say this is one of the numbers I want played at my memorial. When people ask “what’s your theme song you want to play when you enter a room?” This is it.
I've seen several people recommend the Power Station version, when they've never covered this song. They did "Get it on (Bang a Gong)"
Thanks!! I was wondering if my memory was shot, lol!!
That's right. If they want to hear another version of this song, Def Leppard covered it.
@@otisdylan9532 There's also a version from the 80s from a band called Chalk Circle, that got a bunch of airplay in Canada, but little elsewhere.
For me SOME LIKE IT HOT was a fucking BANGER.
Hell yeah! I've been waiting for you guys to get to this one. All time great riff and swagger.
Next big banger! Triumph Live!!!
Love T Rex!!! I have the Electric Warrior and The Slider albums from back in the day just incredible music!!! Rock In Peace Mark..🎩🎸🎶❤️✌️
I can only imagine how great this’d be live. Legendary band. Marc Bolan. RIP. Died too young.

Parts of this song were used in a tv commercial not too long ago. Epic. Now you need Children Of The Revolution.
GOOOOOOOD MORNING A &A FAMILY!!!!
☮️💟♾️
Hey @John H!!! 🤩
'Think Zinc', 'Cosmic Dancer', 'The Motivator' and 'Planet Queen' are great tunes.
Even though he was part of the UK glam rock scene, he had a LOT of fans amongst the punks. So his untimely death hit EVERYONE hard.
T. REX! Can’t go wrong there. 🤩
So many bangers from them but I would definitely check out Children of the Revolution 🖤🖤🖤
Absolutely must do
And also The Groover, Metal Guru, Jeepster and a ton of others 🤔
Yesssss! Seconded 🤘
sorry was telling other viewer version i heard other day was moulin rouge soundtrack bono supergroup but pretty cool.version
T-Rex Had so many bangers, teenagers and people in their 20s to 30s should listen to their - decent 'glam rock'.
He was fab ..... I love the way he sang in an English accent. Marc forever ..... left us too soon!
If the sax part at the end would have been put in a little sooner it would have taken this song to a whole new level. RIP Marc Bolin. 🙏
This band always made me dance and could lift any party to delirium.
Woo! Been begging you guys to do this track for a couple years. One of the raunchiest guitar opens of all time! And so timeless (except for title). Could've been released yesterday. Thanks!
"Raunchy." There IS no other word for it!
The opening riff for the Stones’ “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking” is also a worthy “raunchy” competitor to this great T Rex opening.
@@mrDK1951 Now THAT is a good call! And then soon after the "Hear me singin', soft and low..." part is done SO sweetly with the plaintive vocals and the organ, and then the samba influenced finale, complete with sax--what a song!
Every grunge band existed because of T. Rex. Great band.
They did "Bang a Gong", not this one.
@@jasonremy1627 DOH! Thanks for the reminder. Left my "A" game in bed today apparently.
They didn't cover this. It was Get It On (Bang a Gong).

I still have this on vinyl, it's one of those tunes that every future generation will love.
"Their singer--I don't know his name." He's the gold standard. Marc Bolan.
"You left Led Zeppelin in the oven too long" LMAO. Great Reaction.
T-Rex and Marc Bolan are SubFuckingBlime! Next you might consider "Solid Gold, Easy Action" or "Bang a Gong" (the original)
Marc Bolan is always about the groove. Jeepster would be good to hit next.
now imagine a T-Rex concert with a dozen tracks @ this level...
If you want a Glam Banger with added sax then you need to hear All the Way From Memphis by Mott the Hoople (also from 1973).
LOVE THIS SONG! My holiday wish has come true. Thanks Santa!
How lovely that a tune from when I was 10 has such an effect on you both FIFTY YEARS LATER !! Wowza !! Form is temporary but class is permanent 👍
👍🏴
My Glam tribute opens with this song and segue into Bang A Gong.
Background vocals provided by Flo and Eddie from The Turtles ("Happy Together"). They appeared on a couple of T-Rex albums.
You guys should react to the whole Electric Warrior album . I guarantee you will be blown away. Plus the cover is legendary
One of my favorite songs ever! How did I miss this? I’ve been waiting for you to hear this song. So glad you had the same reaction!
T Rex is a favorite. Great jam.
T. Rex is a goddamn MOOD.
This song was featured briefly in The Truman Show. TOTAL BANGER!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YES! I knew it had to be Twentieth Century Boy. Such an underrated classic!
So many hits from T.Rex
"Chilkdren of the Revolution" next?
You should also hit "Ride a White Swan", "Metal Guru", "Jeepster", "Hot Love", "Telegram Sam" and "Solid Gold Easy Action" eventually.
