  • It's always interesting when you go somewhere fairly "remote" and discover what king of Hobby Stores are available. And Honolulu is no exception. Hopefully you'll agree all the doggy paddling to get there paid off!!! And yes, we go visit the Mighty Mo again while we are at it ; )
    Make sure to check these stores out if you're ever in the area!

    Great fun! Reminded me of trips before cell phones and the first thing ya do after checking in is scour the room's yellow pages for hobby shops.

    We visited JQ Hawaii when we were there in May, 2024, I was able to get a Fujimi Ferrari 250 GTO, was very happy as I'd been looking at getting one but kind of cool getting it Hawaii while on a little vacation.

    Great video and keep 'em coming. Thank you both for the memories. Was stationed at Pearl Harbor and NAS Barber's Point, way back in 75-81. I used to go to the Hobby Company, when it in PearlRidge Shopping Center. They also had a great selection of Humbrol paints. There was another shop called the Legionaire. It probably closed awhile back. Safe travels to you both.

    Did our anniversary trip last October there - beautiful. Thank you for the Pearl Harbor footage. Having read/watched so much about that day and the days after, it was remarkable to stand there. Cannot encourage a visit there enough.

    Thanks for the memories Ben. My Grandson was on the Carl Vinson. In 2015 his dad ( was on Subs ) and I took a Tiger cruise back San Diego, Vinson was tied up at that same pier. Yes, she was a mess when she arrived.

    The Hobby Company is about 15 to 20 minutes away from Honolulu on a good day

    Loved the trip footage. I was intrigued by the cutaway model of the USS Bowfin. Have you ever considered doing the 1/48 scale Trumpeter cutaway U-boat for a future build?

    • @TheMidwestModelShop
      @TheMidwestModelShop  6 месяцев назад +1

      I have given it a little bit of thought. I watched a few other folks build one and thought it was a neat project. I have a 1/72? WWI uboat in my stash. It’s not a cut away. But I was going to build it for a fun “quick” project. It’s mostly painting. But I was going to remake the railing in brass and maybe upgrade the guns.

    I miss the days where you could go to a hobby shop and get a great model i feel those days stateside atleast are long gone im in sc right now and went to a local hobby town usa and it mostly rc there model section was extremely thin and had a hand full of gundams

    • @TheMidwestModelShop
      @TheMidwestModelShop  6 месяцев назад

      It’s getting rough. That’s why I try to check out shops that are kind of isolated. They do a better job of catering to everyone vs realizing “RC” for example, is the big money maker where they are, so they don’t stock anything else.

    the submarine museum was the one place we didn't go to when we were at pearl (other than the Arizona because we couldn't get tickets). The Missouri is docked where the Oklahoma was during the attack. I see you got a little more action than we did too. All we saw was a submarine leaving port.

    Ben, the tour of the hobby shops was great. Thanks. But, your "extra", at the end was way awesome. Thank you for sharing the rest. I've been onboard the Wisconsin and, when she was still in commission, the New Jersey. I want to see the Iowa and the Missouri. Did you get any video of the Arizona memorial? Really, thank you.

    • @TheMidwestModelShop

      Hey Perry, no visit to the AZ. That was for a few reasons. One, both Nora and I have been there and paid our respects. Two, while rightly so, it is a very somber environment over there and they keep it that way. We were having a good time and didn’t want to kill the mood. Three, not sure if they are okay with pictures and videos over there.
      Ive been on the Wisconsin several times and this was my second time on the MO in about a decade. She’s a little worse for wear in my opinion. A lot of areas that I had previously strolled around on, are now blocked off. There’s far more rust than I remember, too. Hopefully they stay on top of it. I still have to visit the New Jersey

    • @perrylamb6286

      @@TheMidwestModelShop Ben, I understand the part about being somber there. I really want to visit both the MO and the AZ one day. It is sad to hear that the MO is not being maintained the way she should be. When I saw the WI, she was beautiful. When I saw the NJ, being in service things were in a used condition, but it was well maintained. Saw a lot of places on the NJ that were off-limits on the WI. Looks like you had fun. That's awesome!

    • @TheMidwestModelShop
      @TheMidwestModelShop  6 месяцев назад +1

      That explains it then… I’ve been to Germany for work and I’m always doing a Google search for shops over there and can never find any. Sounds like a good opportunity to start a business! I’ve always told my wife that if I did it, I would hire someone to build a great website so I could do online sales. Keep the shop at about 25% of the revenue.

    Why are all the models not shrink wrapped or cellophane wrapped? Look like open boxes?

    • @TheMidwestModelShop
      @TheMidwestModelShop  6 месяцев назад

      So in Japan, none of the boxes have any shrink wrap on them. You can just pop the lid off and look right inside. These boxes had a clear “sleeve” on them. It probably just didn’t show in the video. I think this has something to do with laws. And they are half way closer to Tamiya than we are in the lower 48. That’s why I think they have more options and reasonable prices on certain kits.
