The pins and needles interpretation makes more sense than I heard. At one point I read or was told it was supposed to symbolize the pain of childbirth. That never did sit right with me.

I saw an interpretation of the pins and needles as a reference to sex and more specifically sex work. I guess there was a thing for a while where a working lady would have a needle in her sleeve to communicate her profession. There's probably some symbolism in that the pin is closed at the head, while the needle has a hole. There might have also been a connection to wishing wells, like sometimes people threw in pins or needles instead of coins.
