Love this! I live in Quintana Roo now, but spent a year in Merida. I've been to maybe 20 Mayan ruins, and marvel at this ancient culture. Even today, my Mexican friends note how cohesive the indigenous culture such as it is today has remained, and how close knit the community. Perhaps why Merida is considered to be the safest place in Mexico to live. I saw the statue of "Guererro" when I was in Cozumel and marveled at it. Thank you for telling his story. I thought he spent his life living quietly on the island of Cozumel. I am aware of main details of the Caste War between the Maya and the Spaniards, and marvel that they fought for 170 years. no quick conquest. I would love to hear you do a piece on the Caste War, or even on the enslavement on the haciendas of Yucatan
Actually, the Caste War began after the Independence of México. It was the Mexican government that carried it out. There was really more than one factor at work-- local revolts, Belize and British seeking a greater sphere of influence. It began in the 1840's and ended well into the 1900's.
awesome story! and well condensed from the eight hour masterpiece. thank you so much for everything you do, and id like to wish you much success here on youtube.
Fantastic stuff! Fun fact: I played your aztec series to my wife while she was in labour on the way to the hospital to try to get her mind onto something else - not sure it worked though! But greeeeat series ❤
Thankfully she knew I was a weirdo geek when she married me! Uncertain how much she picked up on the fall of the Aztec empire though - but to my defense I luckily did manage to come through with more support than only desperately pitching podcast episodes in the heat of the moment - so happily married still somehow!@@historyonfireofficial
Such an epic story, I feel like ot would make a great movie. I'm surprised there haven't been more movies about this time peroid. Meso and South American history is criminally overlooked
As a GUERRERO myself… it’s awesome to hear my Mexican history in an Italian (?) accent. It’s a long shot that my last name would come from Gonzalo but I wear on my skin that I am part native.
Thank you for this fantastic exploration video. As an American, the primary exploration of Spanish conquest of the Americas consists of the primary conquistadors. More people should watch this!
"Brother Aguilar; I am married and have three children, and they look on me as a cacique here, and captain in time of war. My face is tattooed and my ears are pierced. What would the Spaniards say about me if they saw me like this? Go and God's blessing be with you, for you have seen how handsome these children of mine are. Please give me some of those beads you have brought to give to them and I will tell them that my brothers have sent them from my own country." Gonzalo Guerrero
There’s nothing like a becoming a king in the jungle and staying because your a king story And how cool to have a suit of armor with beautiful designs and colors, but also the Aztec warriors looked so cool, the quetzal feathers they were are from quetzal birds, these birds are extremely beautiful and the feathers change color depending on how the sun hits it, I can see why they valued these almost like gold, I think the Aztecs were advanced because they had psychological operations way before those units existed. When you hear a Mayan death whistle you will understand why it would be so unnerving hearing that at night while hundreds of warriors blow into the whistle, especially if you have never heard it or didn’t know the sound of it back than would sound very super natural
He always gave the excuse he was a slave when trying to rescue him, but in reality he was a captain and caciquee(chief). And fought against Spanish with Spanish tactics.
The proper name would be Hispano-America or more precise Hispano-mesoamerica. And of course there were also unions between native men and spanish women, for example Ihuitemotzin and Francisca de la Cueva.
Hes wearing on his head a Quetzal bird feather so that means it wasnt on mexican soil but what is known Guatemala since El Quetzal is the national bird of that country n only could live in the Mayans territory meaning yucatan as other states are close to Guatemala were part of Guatemala thats why the mexicans are not Mayans but aztecs , it be better to do ur own research bcuz this guy leaves alot of history out !!!!
monstrously incorrect on multiple levels. Yucatan and Quintana Roo are part of Mexico. The people living there are Mexicans Ever been so Quintana Roo and Yucatan? All the indigenous people living there are not Maya?!? Go tell them that and see how it works out.
Your comment on the majority of latinamericans decending from slavery and rapes is biased. Your sources may be biased, too. Italy started a defamatory campaign and exaggerated the bad and quietly let go the good of those 300 years of Spanish empire in the Americas. Los virreiinatos, there was no Spanish colonies in the Spanish empire. After Italy, the Deutch and finally England made it a policy of state, the black legend.

Caste war = war on the Metizos and native allies backed by the French and British?
