  • There isn't really THAT much to learn about sewing machine thread. Sure there's cotton thread but I never use it. Like ever. 99% of the time I use polyester thread. And to fill in the rest of the video I'm going to tell you the story about being the only black kid in my entirely white class watching the OJ Simpson verdict being read...that was...an interesting time.

Wheather you liked the Juice or not when you were a kid, I don't think any teacher should have discouraged a child if they hadn't explained the situation and expected reaction to the outcome beforehand to the entire class. Cool that you understand what the trial is about now, but no apologies needed IMO.

Agreed. I honestly kinda wonder where she is in life now. Or even if there was a backstory that made her react that way. Maybe she has a history that would be interesting to learn about ya know? Not to justify it but to kind of make it make more sense I guess.

I know it's not the most cost effective, but I basically only buy machine embroidery thread online, usually in a pack of colors or a big spool of white or black. I have had issues with thread breaking a LOT, and the embroidery thread seems to hold up really well in my machine. I just picked one of the main brands on amazon and they've been fine.

The irony is in spite of my collection of threads from Guterman, I mainly use polyester as well. Aside from forgetting the reason I bought cotton thread, I’ve used silk thread for making silk neckwear.

Don't get my wrong, cotton thread feels amazing but at the same time doesn't have the same elasticity that polyester has.

I'm old, so we watched it at work. I remember the TV on in the conference room. We kind of watched it from our desks and then (I think) we all gathered around it for the actual verdict. I guess it was a slow work day. I can't remember.
Skin tone never entered my mind in the situation. Neither did yours until you mentioned it this video. I've always said I'd be the worst witness in any crime, because I've just never paid attention to that. "What did he look like?" "I dunno. Just some guy." I hate that we're now DEMANDED to pay attention.

I was very much an adult when this happened. All of the very solid evidence pointed towards him, there was nothing that indicated he had NOT done it. I was shocked that he was found innocent. He was a very sick guy, with a difficult childhood and then got very rich and famous, and very bad combination.
As for thread-- other than my embroidery machine, the only one that comes with clear instructions to use upper-end thread, is my computerised Husqvarna Viking Eden Rose 250C. But to me, that just means nothing less than the Coats & Clark stuff. The only reason I buy Gutterman is for colour matching, when C&C just doesn't have the right shade. There are people who only use black, white, grey, tan and rose, for EVERYTHING, and somehow it works, but I'm a colour matchy-matchy girl, so I have hundreds of spools of thread. Yeah, the cheap stuff is not good. It can have "burrs" on it, it can break, and it will shed very fine hairs of fibre that can clog up your bobbin area. Also, those little spools only have a few yards on them, they're made for hand sewing emergencies, a button that comes off, a little bit of a seam that opened up, that sort of thing.

Yes, this was a polarizing, emotionally confusing trial. Yes, of course, OJ did it, but sometimes we just want to see our team win -- especially when ALL odds are stacked and corrupted against it.

"If the glove doesn't fit, you must acquit" haha. I remember having similar thoughts during the trial without fully comprehending the racial aspect on both sides. That dude was a hero to the black community. HOF athlete and Hollywood superstar, and network broadcaster. Now that I'm older it's pretty obvious that he did it.
I say shame on the teacher for showing that during class without having a proper discussion. The entire situation from the bronco chase to the trial was as circus.
Anyways, great story! What ever happened to your SD Speaks channel?

But after you taught me how to sew darts and seams easily I realized that it's a big world and black people from ND are actually pretty cool! Thank you stylish D! Just don't talk about sewing down here because the boys round the way will probably give you static.

Before I watched your video here... are you by chance a fellow Canadian?
Wish that your teacher hadn't said anything to you at all & instead had an adult reaction to you. Ask8ng you why you felt that way & starting an intelligent discussion with the class. No matter how old you were. If you were old enough to watch it, you were old enough to talk about it, dang it!! 🤬
I did watch the majority of the OJ trial, with ONLY the evidence they showed to the jury, they had no choice but to conclude "not guilty". HOWEVER, knowing the evidence that was excluded by the judge before trail, made a difference. The legal system is so complex & weird at the same time too. *sigh

    I'm totally shocked SD !
How can you just sit there recounting this detailed anecdote from your childhood yet throw in a few remarks about threads while totally failing to reveal the background story about that lonely looking pot-plant that has been wheeled in as your supporting cast in this video, without even so much as an end-credit-name-check? 🪴
Now, unless I'm very much mistaken it is a Dracaena Trifasciata aka Mother-in-Law's Tongue plant. Is there some form of hidden message being communicated today? 🤫
