based on what you said - and I agree with most of what you have said, it is not as much a comparison as a choice. For those who mostly seek and enjoy even "...beautiful sounds", perfect singing technique, phrasing, etc. Pavarotti is (sadly, was) as good as any in the history of singing. But if you want to hear the passion of Calaf the night his fate is decided - this is simply not for a lyric tenor. To me Corelli without doubt.
@@michaelrorer362 Of course you are right Micheal. For my money, in BEL CANTO LYRIC ROLES, THERE. IS NO TENOR IN HISTORY, NOT EVEN CARUSO, WHO CAN EQUAL PAVAROTTI. Pavarotti had a beautiful lyric tenor with an easy top, and although his voice was not very big, it was so well focused and had such beautiful overtones that it could easily ride over an orchestra. Corelli was a true Tenore di Forza, with a voice infinitely larger than Pavarotti's, and better suited to roles such as Calaf. Pavarotti pushed his way into heavy tenor roles such as Radames and Othello, but these roles really needed a heroic voice such as Corelli's. In the lyric tenor roles, Pavarotti was breathtaking. Corelli also had the advantage of being over six feet tall, built like an olympic athlete, and he was blessed with great legs and the face as handsome as that of a movie star. There hasn't been anyone remotely in Corelli's league since he retired, and no lyric tenor in Pavarotti's league.
Pavarotti best in this aria, without a doubt. Corelli is wonderful, but his voice is simply too big for such a lyrical role - this is Rodolfo, not Radames or Siegfried!
Some years ago, when he was 90, Artur Rubinstein, on being acclaimed by a radio interviewer as the greatest living pianist, replied. As a tenor myself I love them both, although Corelli gives me more. It's just something about his voice that resembles the "true tenor", like a prototype. In lighter roles, such as Boheme, I learnt to appreciate Pav's agility and versatility , though. It's a hard choice, but Corelli is the reason why I'm now studying as a tenor, he's my idol.

It's funny how Pav became so identified with the aria, because for all of us slightly older, Corelli, not only owned the aria, but the role. Pav recorded it, but on stage he would have been lost. Pav could do a nice job with it, but he just doesn't have the sound or passion of Corelli-and even those who are not big Corelli fans acknowledge him as the greatest Calaf
You are right. The explanation is simple: Corelli was born to early. Pav could use the media and applied marketing principles, or better, his management. Corelli, born 15 - 20 years later would have been the undefeated champion and had taken Pav's seat. A notion that Pav himself once enunciated in an interview.
Both tenors have their own style and power. In my opinion, Corelli has a little more richness in his voice even at very high notes while Pavarotti thinned out a bit.
I agree completely--Pavarotti had the "ah"; Corelli had the "ohh". To my ear, Corelli seemed to use less effort, making the singing seem more natural. He was the better actor, too, regardless of appearance.
Thanks so much for making this comparison JerryJimson! I think such comparisons are just for fun in any case, and we all know that both of these tenors were absolutely magnificent and among the best of their respective generations, and indeed among the best of all time (that we can hear recordings of, at least). That said, Franco Corelli is quite easily my favorite tenor in opera history -- he's got it ALL!
Exactly, you made a great point here. "For this aria and for this role". These days most people tend to judge a tenor by how "clear" his voice is on high notes. Some roles tho require a "darker" voice even on high notes (Cavaradossi, Poliuto, Calaf, Pollione) so for such roles Corelli is much better. Some other roles (Tonio, Nemorino) are for "light" voices and, on them, Pavarotti is perfect. Corelli, infact, never even tried such roles, he was a smart singer who picked his roles carefully.
Not because Corelli has the most powerful voice does it mean that he were more talented. Both were very talented, one with the clearest and most powerful voice, the other one with the most beautiful and prettiest voice...
I don't feel this is a good or fair comparison - but I thank the person who uploaded this very, very much. So let me say thank you first! To me, when we talk about Pavarotti, Corelli or del Monaco - I would purchase Corelli 9 out of ten times. Corelli is a legend, someone very special> He is Italian in all the positive ways, passionate, imperfect but amazing. Del Monaco does not get the credit he deserves - His diction was not far from Pavarotti. Then Pavarotti - I was blessed to see him live like 3 times. I know that we have not spoken Italian (or any language) I ONLY speak Italian thanks to him (my mother only spoke in dialect to me) I defend il patrimonio to the max. I hope some young kids come across our exchange.... listens/watch the videos, makes his own opinion and maintains the culture in some way
Comparing a tenore lirico with a tenore drammatico makes no sense. Personally I think they are both excellent in their respective fields. Pavarotti has a great voce squillante specially in the higher notes whereas corelli's voice has more vigor. Of course it also has great squillo specially for a dramatic tenor with such a heavy voice. I prefer corelli in this particular aria because it suits his voice better if that's what is meant by the question.
+Venya Har Yarok Sorry but... did you reply to the wrong message by any chance? I think his comment was polite and civil, so yours made me wonder... :)
Nothing of what you write makes sense (Corelli being not charismatic is one of the most absurd claims I've seen here, do you realize that the public adored him for his charismatic stage presence among other things?). Your personal perceptions about charisma and ''naturalness'' have nothing to do with the popularity of Corelli/Pavarotti. Only the media exposure and the changing landscape of the recording market have a legitimate link to this issue.
''the only things Corelli had was nice high notes and power, but the rest disgusts me'' And this ''rest'' would be what ? Passion ? Dramatic insight ? The ability to color the voice ? The creative use of dynamics and shadings? The ability to breath life into cardboard figures ? The vocal generosity ? The dream-like breath control ? If such things ''disgust'' you then go back to 60 years old Pav crooning with Bono et al. You deserve each other.
Depends on what you mean by 'common heart'. It's quite difficult to touch someone who doesn't know that you exist. But del Monaco, Corelli and di Stefano were truly adored by those who knew them. And Callas didn't overshadow them: listen to her live recordings of Chenier (with del Monaco). Tosca (with di Stefano) and Poliuto (with Corelli). They could really hold their own. On a light note, given the testimonies we have, a lot of women wanted to 'belong to' Corelli as well...
Sorry but this is nonsense. A baritone has not a "dull" voice, he just has a different extension. Then there are darker baritones (Gobbi) or ligther ones (Taddia) that do not sound "dull" at all. Corelli is a dramatic tenor (and by Pavarotti statement "the best dramatic tenor who ever lived") and has a darker "color". Pavarotti is lyrical. They are different kinds of tenors. The notes he reaches are the same, Corelli sounds just "more powerful" which is what is meant to be done in this aria.
Yeah, I completely agree with you. Turner Classics was just running the Great Caruso. I just can't believe how good this guy was. At least in this generation, people just don't sing like this anymore.

Corelli, absolutely best !
I have to go with Corelli.
Pavarotti was a great tenor, but Corelli is the ever greatest.

Sur TOUS les aspects.
J'ai apprécié Pavarotti, mais..
CORELLI EST UNIQUE.
M quale merito??
It's funny how Pav became so identified with the aria, because for all of us slightly older, Corelli, not only owned the aria, but the role. Pav recorded it, but on stage he would have been lost. Pav could do a nice job with it, but he just doesn't have the sound or passion of Corelli-and even those who are not big Corelli fans acknowledge him as the greatest Calaf
so true...you echo my sentiments
You are right. The explanation is simple: Corelli was born to early. Pav could use the media and applied marketing principles, or better, his management. Corelli, born
15 - 20 years later would have been the undefeated champion and had taken Pav's seat. A notion that Pav himself once enunciated in an interview.
Corelli n.1
senza paragoni solo Corelli!!!!!!!
Both tenors have their own style and power. In my opinion, Corelli has a little more richness in his voice even at very high notes while Pavarotti thinned out a bit.
They are both fantastic in their special way to sing and their different kind of voice!
CORELLI CORELLI CORELLII
Pavarotti --- Beauty
Corelli --- Power
Both awesome artists
! RIP
I agree completely--Pavarotti had the "ah"; Corelli had the "ohh". To my ear, Corelli seemed to use less effort, making the singing
seem more natural.

That said, Franco Corelli is quite easily my favorite tenor in opera history -- he's got it ALL!
what a question, Corelli !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Corelli, infact, never even tried such roles, he was a smart singer who picked his roles carefully.
stefax 71 , You are a person with a brain. Thank You
Not because Corelli has the most powerful voice does it mean that he were more talented. Both were very talented, one with the clearest and most powerful voice, the other one with the most beautiful and prettiest voice...
CORELLI je neskutečný. Za mě TOP na celé čáře 🤗👍🏻👍🏻
For this aria and for this role, Corelli.
I know that we have not spoken Italian (or any language)
I ONLY speak Italian thanks to him (my mother only spoke in dialect to me)
I defend il patrimonio to the max. I hope some young kids come across our exchange.... listens/watch the videos, makes his own opinion and maintains the culture in some way
It is impossible to compare two singers based on parts of an aria. Pavarotti was great, but to me there's no one greater than Corelli!
Corelli forever!
Corelli e solo Corelli. Pava secondo, buon risultato comunque.
@@eugeniogentili1048 What lyric tenor do you know had a larger voice than MDM or FC?
Comparing a tenore lirico with a tenore drammatico makes no sense. Personally I think they are both excellent in their respective fields. Pavarotti has a great voce squillante specially in the higher notes whereas corelli's voice has more vigor. Of course it also has great squillo specially for a dramatic tenor with such a heavy voice. I prefer corelli in this particular aria because it suits his voice better if that's what is meant by the question.
Naeim Darzi Ok I swear I did not read this comment before posting mine :) I agree 100%
+Venya Har Yarok Sorry but... did you reply to the wrong message by any chance? I think his comment was polite and civil, so yours made me wonder... :)
Pavarotti was a genius compared to other tenors of his time, but if he had sung earlier he would have been a mid-league tenor.
Only the media exposure and the changing landscape of the recording market have a legitimate link to this issue.

of course Corelli!!!
CORELLI.
Corelli. By a distance.
''the only things Corelli had was nice high notes and power, but the rest disgusts me''
And this ''rest'' would be what ?
Corelli 😍
Depends on what you mean by 'common heart'. It's quite difficult to touch someone who doesn't know that you exist. But del Monaco, Corelli and di Stefano were truly adored by those who knew them. And Callas didn't overshadow them: listen to her live recordings of Chenier (with del Monaco). Tosca (with di Stefano) and Poliuto (with Corelli). They could really hold their own.
On a light note, given the testimonies we have, a lot of women wanted to 'belong to' Corelli as well...

Corelli, sin dudarlo un instante
!Corelli!
Franco Corelli wasn't in "The Great Caruso". It was Mario Lanza.
