Corelli was hands down the greatest tenor of the past century. I know some purists are going to start throwing names out, but for sheer beauty of voice, brilliance of tone and the ability to get maximum projection as a true spinto tenor he was unmatched. He and Del Monaco are two names mentioned that could bounce their voices off the back walls of the old Met. Had the privilege to hear him live and there was no better.

Evidence of this can be seen & heard on You Tube when he appeared as Gremin in EUGENE ONEGIN at the Bolshoi for his 90th birthday & still in fine form. He began his career, I believe in the early 1920s & continued making recordings & giving concerts after leaving his stage roles behind.
