This is a band who isn't afraid to be themselves and release their own music. That's why I love them. And Calvin Johnson is one tough dude... Don't let him fool you.
I don't even listen to punk music but I love this band. The reason is because they seem to be doing what they love doing, for the sake of doing it. They're being humble, and they're being themselves.
everything about this video rocks - the drummer's shirt, the singers hair, the kid that can barely play that sweet ass looking guitar. Thanks for the vid!
Calvin Johnson is a bit of a hero of mine. He started he's own label, he held the International Pop Underground Convention and he was in one of the best indie bands of all time.
One of the greatest bands ever shame I only discovered them after they'd split. It's the fact they can't play that makes me like them they still had the guts to go out and do it these guys are punk in it's truest sense it aint about haircuts.
"Hipster" had been revived by the early '90s, when Spy Magazine used it to refer to various demimonde celebs...although actually it more accurately described Spy's staff and subscribers.
Yo what the fuck. I remember I stumbled across this video when I was super young and I was confused as shit. But I do remember I still thought it was kinda cool, and the ocean spray tshirt imagine stuck w me. Then I forgot about it altogether and grew up. Now I'm older and beat happening is my prob my favorite band and seeing this video again was toooo fucking real. It's like the universe brought me here
They are the most original band in the world..I understand your opinion..you should check out Dub Narcotic Sound System or The Halo Benders..I think you would probably like them!! But Beat Happening is really good..listen to them more and you will grow to like them! Trust me!
Also - They don't always look so reluctant and lethargic when they perform. This song calls for and creates a grim, downer mood laced with thick sexy syrup. I think their demeanor as a band is appropriate and adds to the performance.
Sure. The other guy is Doug Martsch from Built to Spill (who is also responsible for most of the interesting guitarwork). I like the voice interplay. Cheers!
The black archtop in this video looks very similar to this Silvertone on ebay. However, the guitar in the video could be a Harmony or a Kay: www.ebay.com/itm/Silvertone-Archtop-Acoustic-Guitar-Currently-Strung-Left-Handed-/161332465655?pt=Guitar&hash=item25902a0ff7
I'm into oldschool postpunk, oldschool industrial, synthwave and yeah, also the infamous italodisco - so obviously this it's not my thing at all - i don't find this band annoying though, I think i will investigate more about them... I'm pointing out that it's not annoying bc i'm well aware of the influence of this band over whole genres that i cannt stand. It's not overrated as the pissed off Fugazi fanboy says here ... it's just another genre, nothing to do with Fugazi (quite awesome band) Throwing stuff on stage is extremely rude - usually smelly punks do that.
oh my god.....didn't realize that I'd already viewed this video and was about to make this very same comment..... I may be in a rut but at least I'm consistent!
My sister's got a rental house in Montesano, so there's actually a chance that I would be in that neck of the woods sometime. I really like the image of an Ocean Spray factory, but I'm pretty sure they use farms instead. I suppose a bottling plant counts as a factory, but it's nowhere as cool as a giant machine that spits out cranberries would be.
i really want calvin johnson's shirt. he looks adorable here. the others looks pretty bored, but i think it goes well with the deadpan vibe of the song.
i checked out the album, a few of the songs are pretty neat,a couple not at all, im not sure if his voice really works with the back up singing that's in about every track of the album. great music though, thanks! :)
Pearl Jam once did a cover version of this when they played the Gene Peak Arena in McBean, Ga. Eddie introduced it as, "Here's a song about eating s*%t"
Oh, I'm just funnin'. You don't often see brand names in music videos anymore. Just that lawyerly blur that always makes me wonder for a split-second whether I've got glaucoma.
yer, I never really looked into the whole 'twee' music genre much, always just an interest. But you seem to know a fair bit for someone who originally "hated" Beat Happening! :P
Drummer standing up, guitarist sitting down--world turned over
Fausto Chavez Nice!
lol. thats the way Calvin likes it.
Revolutionary
the ocean spray shirt, the really tight jeans and the look of apathy in their eyes while theyre barely even playing their instruments.. i love it all
That "affected" look of apathy in their eyes, you mean?
very late 80s early 90s "we shop at thrift stores and are jaded"
@@dominicticinovic5663 you're a genius.
@@subsamadhi4124 you're so cool & perceptive
This is a band who isn't afraid to be themselves and release their own music. That's why I love them. And Calvin Johnson is one tough dude... Don't let him fool you.
This bands' enthusiasm is off the charts
the best drummer in the world
I don't even listen to punk music but I love this band. The reason is because they seem to be doing what they love doing, for the sake of doing it. They're being humble, and they're being themselves.
Tim and Eric can try their damnedest, but you can't get more public access than this right here.
The butter boy ain't got nothing on this.
He's like the Jim Morrison of the 80's. Gotta love Calvin's contributions to music.
everything about this video rocks - the drummer's shirt, the singers hair, the kid that can barely play that sweet ass looking guitar. Thanks for the vid!
best cranberry juice advert ever
Calvin Johnson is a bit of a hero of mine. He started he's own label, he held the International Pop Underground Convention and he was in one of the best indie bands of all time.
really glad cranberry juice found a place in this song

ocean spray has farms southwest of olympia, near longbeach and aberdeen. I imagine that's where he got the shirt.
i love this song mainly because of calvin johnson's deadpan singing. it's amazing.
everything about this is fucking hilarious oh my god
i
that drummer's havin' a blast haha
One of the greatest bands ever shame I only discovered them after they'd split. It's the fact they can't play that makes me like them they still had the guts to go out and do it these guys are punk in it's truest sense it aint about haircuts.
this performance is so iconic
This is the best band from Olympia
My favorite Olympia band!
my fav band
Beat Happening changed my life.
awesome.
classic beat happening - the drummer is really going for it!
I first saw BH around this time in San Francisco. Fan ever since.
omg calvin is so fabulous
T-shirt fit is legit
so much energy
Nirvana 'Come As You Are' :) This band was one of the favorite bands of Cobain.
this sounds like About a Girl, listen to 80's by Killing Joke if you wanna hear what come as you are.
@@pipn9090 you are right
"Hipster" had been revived by the early '90s, when Spy Magazine used it to refer to various demimonde celebs...although actually it more accurately described Spy's staff and subscribers.
I just spoke with THE Calvin Johnston on the phone WOW i can die happy now.

This is beautiful in its own way.
indeed indeed
pure bliss
Possibly the greatest song ever made
no doubt
My favorite video on YT
Anybody watch TCTV Olympia in the late eighties/early nineties? Can we have some Roxx Joxx postings? My god, that was gold.
love this guy
I love the way this band upsets close-minded people. They did it back in the day, and it seems like they are still doing it now!
Couldn't have put it better at all.
yeah they are totally great!
This could have been a public access studio somewhere. And yet it resounds.
i love this
jus so cool
my favorite!
terrific they cant play
I can't believe this was filmed in 1988 and not the 2000s, what the hell, the introversion and awkwardness feels so modern.
haha. gotta love the first close up shot of Calvin.
Indie at its finest. :p
I really couldn't agree more. I'm always like, "But is it Beat Happening?" lol
They are the most original band in the world..I understand your opinion..you should check out Dub Narcotic Sound System or The Halo Benders..I think you would probably like them!! But Beat Happening is really good..listen to them more and you will grow to like them! Trust me!
No bass. Very simple. This proves you don't need musicianship to make the music excellent.
cheeky, cheeky
The riff sounds like About a girl
Well, Kurt did have a tattoo of the lead singer's record company logo.
Love this band, at the time really quite unique, people forget nowerdays with all the C86 copycats around
This is the best band in the world. For sure. Serious. Not joking.
Also - They don't always look so reluctant and lethargic when they perform. This song calls for and creates a grim, downer mood laced with thick sexy syrup. I think their demeanor as a band is appropriate and adds to the performance.
Too much coffee for sure. Those boys are practically bouncing off the walls!
LMAO
There's a lady in the band!
i wish you could still flip on the tv and see some bizarre public access show like this.
yeah he's the best drummer in the world! Once you know, he plays it'll be something!
intellectually I understand that this was filmed in 1988 but I cannot convince myself that it isn't 2007
Genialosa!
Sure. The other guy is Doug Martsch from Built to Spill (who is also responsible for most of the interesting guitarwork). I like the voice interplay. Cheers!
@robotnudist yes, he is tenor in this song, that's why i said that.
Anyone know the make and model of that guitar? it's lovely

Got any recommendations?
How do i find more footage of this performance I looked up the crashing through box set but nothing comes up besides listings for sale
Wearing your own band shirt...this totally influenced Metallica.
oh my god.....didn't realize that I'd already viewed this video and was about to make this very same comment..... I may be in a rut but at least I'm consistent!
I strive for Calvin Johnson's confidence
I'm guessing they were really into the jesus and mary chain
thought the same thing
Never thought of that! Bear in mind though that they'd established their shtick by somewhere around 1983.
Well before the JMC
Both were really into VU
More into the Cramps probably
Anyone know the model of that guitar?
I want a beat happening shirt
@macmintire1 i didnt notice it until i read your comment. but it is kind of similar. not just the intro but the rest as well.

I don't think there's anything ironic about it at all. These are good people, man.
yeah
This version is preferred by far over the album.

He needs more reverb on the mic, his voice has allot of personality.. its awesome 3
Sorry Tic Tok skateboaard guy, Beat Happening was doing Ocean Spray product placement decades ago.
♥
What kind of guitar is she playing?
😍

its amazing how you will still see people dressed and with the same personality. its been 25 years since. god damn hipsters.
Listen all the way through? 'Ponytail' - what's your take on that love song?
Proof that anyone can make music - and should! You don't just have to be a rapper, kids
wholesome comment, calvin johnson went on to be a great artist as well. (not that this isnt great)
best hairstyle
@steveasat2 Not sure he is wearing it for any reason...other than its ...a shirt.
He reminds me of a not depessed unepileptic Ian Curtis, yay!
epic drumer
Pearl Jam once did a cover version of this when they played the Gene Peak Arena in McBean, Ga. Eddie introduced it as, "Here's a song about eating s*%t"
gonna try to find that cover now.
Am I crazy or was Calvin holding up a David Lee Roth jacket at the beginning?
Oceanspray T-shirt FTW!

Silvertone archtop from Sears, I believe.
the dippy dawg fuckin-A
i like him in the halo benders more, but beat happening does rock
I believe it's a Silvertone archtop acoustic
yer, I never really looked into the whole 'twee' music genre much, always just an interest. But you seem to know a fair bit for someone who originally "hated" Beat Happening! :P
Ya I don't think of beat happening as twee. Its just a certain kind of dance music.
what line-up is this?
