Teens too. Saturday morning at boarding school, shopping in Cheltenham, independent record shop, playing loud, this left with me with outside the trains don’t run on time on the other side and Leeds town hall on the cover 😀
G of4 Solid Gold tour was my 1st gig as a baby faced 17 yo. The Warehouse in Liverpool and shitting myself that I wouldn't get in for being under age. I did and have never forgot it.
I was privileged to know them all over the years (ex music bizzer). Hugo was the most down-to-earth bloke; far removed from the Univ Leeds Situationism of Jon. Interesting to note how academic philosophy interacts w 'the subjects of their theories'. Great Fn band!
this band changed everything, hands down, no comparisons, their live shows were epic every singe time, Andy Gill changed how I heard music forever, RIP, fucking geniuses
@@pressureworks Au Pairs were great. The first album anyway, not so much the second. There were others too - Delta 5, Fire Engines, Kleenex in Switzerland. Gang of Four were first, and were more committed to avoiding cliche.
Punk Funk at its finest. Very old school Punk Rocker here starting with MC 5 on to Patty Smiths first album in 1975. Now another birthday hit 73. Best L.A. band was X at the Whiskey A Go Co in 79.
Loved his bass with FACT written on it. Perfect word for a bass 😀 I’m a Shriekback fan too, so got to hear him there also. I think he ‘liked’ a comment of mine once 😀
I wonder if it was recorded on film rather than videotape? And film can be re-scanned later as scanning equipment gets better. Some 70s dramas filmed on 16mm can look great these days if the film survives.
@@blakewhittington4336 analog music recording certainly does not sound better at all, digital is almost perfect while analog has plenty issues with compression and clipping
I remember seeing this on a New Year's Eve 'best of' edition of The Old Grey Whistle Test with my jaw hanging open. I appreciate it even more now. Compelling stuff.
One of my all-time favorite bands! Great video - thanks for posting. The one thing that was a bit of a revelation to me watching after all these years was just how terrific and dynamic Dave Allen was on bass. I always appreciated his work with Shriekback (his bass line was the spine after all) but he's so much more out front and part of the mix in this one. Jon and Andy were always so riveting on stage I often overlooked Dave - this made him stand out more. And of course Hugo always always drove it home. Brilliant
Saw them at the Rock Garden in there early days. Amazing and ground breaking with that angular random guitar and punch bass etc. Hugely influential on bands that followed. Andy Gill was underrated as a great guitarist. Lots of gaps between the notes and tension.
@@canadariots1139 no no no no . sorry but the core original Gang of Four ,is one of if not the best live band ever ,.don't get me wrong Joy Division was a great band ,but live i think GOF was better .much better . At the beginning the “smack” of the metal is on “4” (as in 1, 2, 3, 4). Counting it in this way from the start is how to decipher this rhythm. Also, that drum kit, with the 20” kick drum? Sounds awesome. Saw Hugo place that kit at Perkins Palace in LA, 1982. What an astounding show. REM opened.
When I wuz a wee lad I went over to our neighbor's house who had television. I saw this news report that always effected me. It said "Blah blah blah, if the president knew about it, he'd stop it in a minute. MY seven year old self wondered "doesn't the Prez have a TV or some shit?" Now I'm like "doesn't the Prez have 4chan 'n shit?"
He didn't appear to like them much though. Andy Gill said that at their first meeting in the studio the band played Paralysed/What we all Want/Cheeseburger and something I can't remember off what became Solid Gold and Douglas reportedly commented that all their songs sounded the same.
Hahaha. Yeah hahaha the beat on the four is a little unusual. That kind of thing typically does tend to go over the heads of the standard two digit... But that's what makes the song.
Watching this in my pyjamas at home one evening as a teen changed my life.
You were a smart kid. This would have been totally lost on me as a teen.
currently seventeen, watching this in my pajamas at home in the evening
15, watching this in my pyjamas at home but it’s 1am now so unfortunately not the evening🤷♂️

One of the most unique and brilliant bands in rock history. I was lucky enough to see them live up in Chicago in about 1980.
Saw them there too. At Mother's, opening for Buzzcocks. It was super hot in a basement bar.
Not sure why I never noticed before ... the drummer is a fucking BEAST!
with a name like Hugo lol...best band ever

Some similarities with The Au Pairs.

I will never forget seeing this for the first time on the big screen in "URGH! A Music War" and my taste in music changed forever.
Yeah, and looks like Andy has the same outfit on here that he wore in Urgh lol.
Masterpiece of 20th century music.
No mention so far of Dave Allen on bass - vital to the early Gang of 4 sound and storming it on this.
Maybe because with Sara Lee there was no change in style.
I never knew he sang.

Classic song. Brings back memories of Urggghh a Music War
Fascinating. You can feel the notes being played in the silence.
This is so primal and raw.
Seriously, how does this footage look so modern!? I’m super impressed ♥️

What a great, great band.
This is genius in it's representation and delivery.Andy Gill was and is,after Jake burns one the finest guitarist of that time.
The space between the notes is just as important as are the notes being played. What a performance!
Incredible!!! Such clean video and sound all of these years later. True mastery.
BBC quality!
I alwasy got Pop Group vibes from GOF. i love this band so much.

One of the best bands od the World between late 1970's/early 1980's. I mean, one of the greatest bands ever.

I just can't believe what I saw.
Me too, and I have seen it many times. English angular post punk at its finest.
So dub. So good.
So ahead of their time.
GOF were probably the most un-cliched band ever, with for my money, the best guitarist there ever was. God knows what Ed Sheeran fans would think.
The Pop Group weren´t exactly doing music to please the Clash crowd either ...
Haha, yes that's a good point there! The Pop Goup were
good too

The 4 (or the 1) gets displaced during the reenty at 3:20. Could be a video edit maybe? That 4 takes a lot of concentration.
@astolennova Your right. Dude screws it up. But Hugo is still in time. That shows what a great drummer he is.
