Wow, Hugo! Incredible to hear from the man himself - talking up _Pylon_ (!), no less. Brilliant band - would be huge today. Vanessa Briscoe Hay is a hero. Rest easy, Andy. 🖤
Hugo is a legend and a Gent. Every single person on earth should be made digest every note of GOF's Entertainment. The world would be a far better place...!
I was fortunate enough to meet Hugo a couple of times back in '79 and '80 at shows in New York (Irving Plaza & Hurrah!) nice guy and a true lover of music.
This is brilliant to have a hidden gem musician that is well respected and SHOW VINYL!!!!. Very cool to see Hugo deliver an inside look to who/what and why!!!
As others have said, what a sweet man, and what a fascinating and informative piece. I had the privilege of seeing Gang of Four around 1979-80, and their music has more than stood the test of time.
Loved this ! Gang of Four was brilliant and I enjoyed hearing Hugo speak and listen to his thoughts. From one drummer to another, thank you for your contributions musically, all the best to you!
I was lucky enough to have Hugo as one of my professors at college. Had no idea who he was at the time. Really cool guy. Great teacher too. Wish I had the wherewithal to pick his brain at the time.
I love that he went to the books. I most admit I spent nearly the entire video wondering "what are those books?" Can we do a "what's on that shelf?" as well? lol
Totally agree with all of this praise! He had great personal anecdotes and while he is in the business, he still seems to have the passion of a fan exploring the vast world of music. The Miles Davis story is incredible. It seems as if he wanted to go on for hours talking about his collection and influences. Just as you think he is done, he moves on to some great books and then to the box sets. Awesome! We need more from people as enthusiastic and knowledgeable as Hugo. And yes, he must love him some John Irving.
My favorite 'What's in my Bag?. I loved his choices. And his descriptions of how much each album meant to him were fantastic. Warm, down-to-earth and informative. Great person and amazing drummer.
Wonderful to be introduced to Hugo and hear from someone whose taste in music includes absolutely no records in my own collection. I love his articulate delivery and sincere passion. This is just one of the great things about these Amoeba clips: we meet people we might not know and discover that there is a world of music beyond our own little world of preferences. Now I will watch the Clem Burke clip. Thank you Amoeba.
Love Gang of Four, and Shriekback is a lifelong favorite band of mine also. Their show at First Avenue in Minneapolis back in the day remains one of the best concerts of my life. Great edition to "What's In My Bag."
Funny the way pop/rock music works. Back in the early 80s, me and my mates loved Gang of Four because they didn't look or sound anything like mainstream American bands like Alice Cooper and CCR. And now I hear GO4's drummer was into that stuff.
Yeah, alternative types could be pretty ideological when it came to what was cool back in the stone age. Me & my buds liked it if it had a soul. From the yardbirds, megadeth, feelies, t-rex, x-ray spex... One big tent. Thanks Hugo, for dashing an ex-punk's expectations, love the 'Coop (shhh, don't tell anyone, Idles rock too).
Loved that, very entertaining. Loved and still enjoy westworld today. That first album was and is the business.so very impressed with the connection there. And that he still had the stencil all lined up perfectly too.
I always liked this series--it's a great pain that the Hollywood store is gone. They had a section of old magazines where I'd often found killer publications at "to go" prices. Zines, Sight & Sound, Film Quarterly, Maximum Rock n Roll. Also a robust VHS section often filled with smart & cool movies. Priced very low. The SF & Berkeley stores seem to charge wayyyy too much for VHS tapes. Oh well no sale then. I'm glad Hugo also noted his books. And its cool that a Bay Area band played one of his first concerts and ripped it up. They probably exploded shortly after my one chance seeing Gang of FOur play was at the Fillmore, it felt like the packed room was so moved by the Entertainment era songs that floor moved along with us in waves.
came home from a walk, listening to CCR's "Back in the Bayou" on my headphones - to find a new "What's in My Bag" video, where the first album picked is - CCR's "Back in the Bayou." Love moments like that
Damn he’s one of my musical heroes. All of the early GO4 is the soundtrack of my youth. I saw them twice, first in ‘82 with Hugo. This was a great video, I’m going to check out some of his recs.
The Jac Holzman book is a fascinating read & PIL promoting Metal Box ( Second Edition ) on American Bandstand is classic as is their interview with Tom Snyder !
1st time seeing this guy and know nothing about his band but I'm pretty sure I want to hang out with him for several hours to talk about music and books.
man i really need to check out more Dr. Feelgood... so many bands i respect cite them as a huge influence but they’ve just never really clicked. also, nice original metal box! i’ve never been able to find a copy, only second edition. it was awesome to see all the different styles of music Hugo is into, he does such a great job of fusing them into a playing style that’s so experimental while always staying in the pocket - the drum pattern on what we all want comes to mind, one of my absolute favorites
Can somebody please give Hugo a weekly show where he bestows his musical knowledge upon us? This was great.
Came to comment the same thing. Come on @ Hugo we’d love to hear more from ya. I’ve watched this twice.
There's a great podcast called The Trap Set. Hugo is a recent guest, great episode.
@@jasonshort1437 I’ll definitely check that out! Thanks for the info.
Preach!
3:30 “I have stood in that phone box...and boy it smelled of piss”
What an absolute peach Hugo is. I second the idea that he needs a show or a podcast.
Wow, Hugo! Incredible to hear from the man himself - talking up _Pylon_ (!), no less. Brilliant band - would be huge today. Vanessa Briscoe Hay is a hero.
Rest easy, Andy. 🖤
Love Pylon.
Hugo is a legend and a Gent. Every single person on earth should be made digest every note of GOF's Entertainment. The world would be a far better place...!
One of the greatest albums ever. And it works on so many levels.
I got to meet Hugo once and, yes, he's as nice of a guy as he seems.
This is easily Top 10 Best What's In My Bag? And I've seen 95% of 'em. Really.
Same here, and I totally agree!
Agreed!
Meh
Seriously!!! And as I get older and don't seem to lose my sheer passion/obsession with music, his enthusiasm at his age was an inspiration...
I'm 2 seconds in, gotta say, this is going to be good no matter what!
Thank you Amoeba for continuing WIMB throughout the pandemic!
He Dj'ed the opening of my college roomates brewery in Salem mass five years ago. What a great guy ...killer drummer.
I was fortunate enough to meet Hugo a couple of times back in '79 and '80 at shows in New York (Irving Plaza & Hurrah!) nice guy and a true lover of music.
Legends.. One of the greatest bands of all time.. Andy Gill, you will be missed..
As soon as i seen hugo from "gang of four" i knew it would be great. He didnt disappoint. He definitely needs a youtube channel
I found his essence rare, it's what I'm looking for! What a nice guy and a solid selection.
And Wilco of Dr. Feelgood was the executioner in season 1 of Game of Thrones. Great selection of records and memories.
Thanks so much for doing these vids. They're therapeutic.
I’ve seen my future thanks to Hugo and I’m okay with it. Vinyl and books...what a life it’ll be.
I always wondered what 'long shot kick de bucket' was all about - amazing!
Love the whole "what's in my bag" series..Please keep doing them
Powerhouse drummer from one of post-punk's finest.
Guy is an unreal drummer. Looks healthier than he did back in the early 2000s. Unbelievable show in Hollywood.
I love that he went to the books. I most admit I spent nearly the entire video wondering "what are those books?" Can we do a "what's on that shelf?" as well? lol
Me too.

At Last Someone on "Whats In My Bag ?" Who Knows His Music And has Brilliant taste......And Plays in A Great Band.
That was excellent. Hugo needs his own show
This guy is cool. Love all of his choices. Love Go4 too
My favorite 'What's in my Bag?. I loved his choices. And his descriptions of how much each album meant to him were fantastic. Warm, down-to-earth and informative. Great person and amazing drummer.

Thank you Amoeba.
Great collection, The Gang of Four was always one of my faves even when I dj'ed hip-hop sets I would get in some Gang of Four
Wow! Those must have been crazy.
Great band, superb drummer. His choices were terrific.
So wonderful to see someone who is still truly enthusiastic about music.
Bonus Shriekback mention!!!
Love Gang of Four, and Shriekback is a lifelong favorite band of mine also. Their show at First Avenue in Minneapolis back in the day remains one of the best concerts of my life. Great edition to "What's In My Bag."
What a nice bloke, only found Gang of Four this year. You gained a fan in 2021!
A great drummer from a great band with excellent tastes!!
What a neat guy. Stellar taste and brilliant musician.
Terrific picks from a man who definitely knows his music and music history. Keep on chooglin Hugo!
I valeted this guy's van at a hotel when Gang of Four toured around 2005. Good guy!
Wow had no idea Hugo was involved with Westworld. Sonic Boom Boy was a great infectious piece of 90's pop. And great video too.
Hugo, thank you so much for sharing your music experience and thank you for an amazing recommendations, put quite a few records on my list 👍
That was Great!.. Nice suprise.. Glad i saw him with GO4 when they reformed 2005 or so.. Cheers Hugo!
Great music in his bag. Totally agree with him over the band Free , magic band. Saw Gang Of Four support The Rezillos back in 1978. Amazing band
I only got into Gang of Four this year at the age of 35, looking forward to seeing them play live in London tonight 06/10/2023
I'm 34 and only got into them at bout 3 years ago
one of the best episodes yet. Great person, musician and selections
Thank you Hugo. It means a lot to hear you speak about things other than Gof4. You guys did great music that I'll always appriciate. Chris. x
Really enjoyed this. Gang of Four are awesome. Cool guy too. Cool seeing him showing his Pylon boxset. Absolutely love Pylon.
Funny the way pop/rock music works. Back in the early 80s, me and my mates loved Gang of Four because they didn't look or sound anything like mainstream American bands like Alice Cooper and CCR. And now I hear GO4's drummer was into that stuff.
Right! I believe some of the Replacements members used to cover Roundabout by Yes when they were starting up LOL.

@@arthuraguirrejr.9500 I'm sure it was painstakingly recreated. Probably about 20 seconds long & blato as fuck.
HERO. And what a warm fellow to boot.
this is how i talk to my plants and records
My Metal Box looks like that as well. Fortunately the music is still as fresh as the day I bought it in '79
Great lad. One can tell he enjoys his music so much.
I love how he pulled out Pylon at the very end ...A CLASSIC!!!!!
Pylon & GOF were 2 bands cut from the same cloth, I think.
Loved that, very entertaining. Loved and still enjoy westworld today. That first album was and is the business.so very impressed with the connection there. And that he still had the stencil all lined up perfectly too.
Wow Hugo, you've got some great tastes and that was a highly entertaining look at some of it. Thanks Amoeba, for yet more awesomeness!
This has to be the best episode of this series ive seen.
I always liked this series--it's a great pain that the Hollywood store is gone. They had a section of old magazines where I'd often found killer publications at "to go" prices. I loved the part where he was stocking his record stores with home-made albums .....that’s classic !!!
It would be formidable a parallel What's In My Bag series just with Hugo.
Damn he’s one of my musical heroes. All of the early GO4 is the soundtrack of my youth. I saw them twice, first in ‘82 with Hugo. This was a great video, I’m going to check out some of his recs.
Love Fire and Water...the classic albums box set for Free is a must buy👍
Thanks, Hugo! Gang of Four are a unique promontory of a band. Jutty and good!
The Jac Holzman book is a fascinating read & PIL promoting Metal Box ( Second Edition ) on American Bandstand is classic as is their interview with Tom Snyder !
@Rich Bee Thanks ! Will do. 👌
This was so enjoyable. I love it. Seems like such a great guy ☺️
One of the best what’s in my bag issues ever. Great selections
Really enjoyed that. RIP Andy Gill.
Wonderful. Thank you
Such a lovely, engaging interview and some fine picks.
You come hard with Creedence right out the gate?! I'm sold already...
Great records! Really dug the reggae recommendations. Not really my wheelhouse but listening finding a lot of heat!
Really in awe of that original P/i/L metal box.
Enjoyed that! I don’t think that you saw Miles in the mid-90s...he died in ‘91.
dr feelgood!! i saw them live, was a cool concert, done a really good show.
Wow great timing, I have "Return the Gift" in the CD player of my car as I type this.
excellent, great speaker and entertainer, really..wow....he must have a show by his self....ty
what a selection! Brilliant
Wonderful.
I would expect Hugo to have incredible and, extremely wide ranging mudical tastes...
Kickass
1st time seeing this guy and know nothing about his band but I'm pretty sure I want to hang out with him for several hours to talk about music and books.
Great collection 😍
Just fantastic suggestions, thanks to him and of course ameoba record store❤🤩
What a great selection, from Hugo. PYLON BABY. BAYOU COUNTRY BABY. LETS GO
Love that he has the Pylon box
GOF- Entertainment... Everything he just said about every album he just highlighted... for me, GOF- Entertainment...
Do not like his taste in music but what a sweet heart with loads of stories. Dude
This is probably my favorite episode yet!
Very very cool
We need a another video, where Hugo tries to open the PIL box in under five minutes.
I enjoyed that thoroughly. Give that man a show or a podcast
I just picked up that Bowie record. It’s so amazing!
Drums baby plus great A&R talents...Dr Feelgood man nice...new that
You've got great taste! 👍😀
Gang of Four 4 Ever.
Really enjoyed this. It's the best WIMB I've seen in some time.
Free “Fire and Water” is a nice drop. I have that in my dad’s old collection and it’s a really cool record.
man i really need to check out more Dr. Feelgood... so many bands i respect cite them as a huge influence but they’ve just never really clicked. also, nice original metal box! i’ve never been able to find a copy, only second edition.

That Alice Cooper lp was so great. What a great design for an album release. Wow.
Great bloke with great taste!
