This is the story of Princess Luna becoming Nightmare Moon. After not feeling appreciated by her people (and being jealous of her sister) she decides to take over, going as far as to attack her sister after she refused to stand down. It's never revealed if her people really didn't appreciate her or if it was just her jealousy that lead her to believe so. In the end Celestia had to banish her to the moon. The wizard is Starswirl the Bearded, who's basically Merlin. He doesn't have anything to do with the story but he's a prominent historical figure in the world they come from.
Basically what happened is that the pony who is singing is princess Luna, luna has a sister who basically calls all the shots. Her sister princess Celestia is older, more beautiful, more loved. Luna raises and Lowers he moon while Celestia raises and lowers he sun. While everyone’s runs and plays in the sun, they sleep through Luna’s beautiful night and she wants recognition. With that she sings about all of this and she then slowly turns evil if you payed attention, first her eyes, then her hair, then everything. From her looks to the castle to the sky itself. While she is singing an old wizard named star swirl he bearded went and warned her sister, then after this song picture a lullaby for a princess happening. That’s what happened. BUTTT this is fan made and non of the extra stuff like the singing and the wizard were confirmed. I stopped watching the show but I still remember he story! Hope this helped! Bye!
Season 7 finaly conferemd that star swirld the bearded was NOT there when it happend. He disappeared before nightmair moon happend. He dissapered before Discord Happend.

You really should watch the show, it completely diverts your expectations. They even had a full on cult once! It was glorious.

That is because Duo Cartoonist and Hasbro both used Toon Boom Animation software for their projects. Oh, did you notice the one thing that that really impressed me about the animation? During Luna's song by the open windows of the Throne Room, she turns 180 degrees to work her magic upon the moon. No cut-away shots, no sequentially shown single angle pictures strung together to simulate such a turn. NO. We get to see a cartoon character actually 'turn in place' in a few steps, so fluidly, and so 'naturally' that we don't even notice it... since our minds see this every day in real life. just a couple of thoughts, the Frank Pony
At the very beginning of the show Princess Luna was coming back from the moon the two Princesses are apart of the official lore of the original TV show, the Lullaby for a Princess and the Moon rises are both animations of right before and after Luna was banished. (and those two animations are what got me into MLP)
I also love the way her hair moves its beautiful isn't it? Also she is sad because everypony is asleep in the night and awake in the day so she wanted do make a group of pony that are awake at night and asleep in the day but her sister forbate it cuz it will break the harmony of the day and night that's why she's sad
So princess luna usually sleeps at day and wakes up at night to maintain the order of Night, at the beginning she felt alone and gave in to darkness cause she had nothing. At day time she had to sleep cause she gets tired of all the work she does at night, and at day she sleeps, so she has no time to meet people and have friends, cause everyone sleeps at night. She gets jealous and really sad but she holded it in, but eventually she gave in after her elder sister (princess Celestia) refused to give her a separate colony in which night ponies thrive.
