  • ACU Senior Research Fellow Kevin Donnelly discussed the importance of secondary mathematics following worrying recent statistics.
Reports have shown a decline in Year 11 and 12 students taking up mathematics in school.
Mr Donnelly told Sky News Australia host Peta Credlin this is a problem “the Prime Minister will have to address”.
“We will never be successful in STEM.”
“All this talk about energizing the economy will never work unless we get more young people into university studying those subjects.”

School standards have been slipping for years. This is a cultural problem.

Back in the days before teachers decided maths was too hard to teach, maths was actually a compulsory subject in Year 11 and 12.

Thankfully that is no longer the case. There is no point forcing year 11 and 12 students to take subjects they have no interest in and don't need in their future careers.

Because you have not got teachers who are proficient in maths. I witnessed this as a teacher who entered teaching after a successful career in business accounting. Teachers struggling with primary school level mathematics 😂😂😂😂😂

What else did you expect from a generation that is not incentivised to excel? Keep increasing the dole - keep them youngins hooked to tik tok - and we can all march towards serving our Chinese owners soon enough.
