    Such a beautiful sound. I know a lot of people hate these engines, because they mostly convert fuel to noise....but I also know people that refuse to get rid of their 2-stroke Detroit Diesel engines. They can be super easy to work on, reliable and run flat out for hours and hours at a time. I have a friend that bought a Detroit Diesel powered military generator, and it runs both of his chicken houses, his house and 3 other houses in an emergency.

      That reliability is 50% of why a lot of people still run them, the other 50% being that absolutely sonorific demonic howl they spit out the back. I ever end up an owner/op I'll probably shoehorn a V8 Screamin' Jimmy into an FTL Argosy, maybe hotrod it a bit, put a 10spd behind it, and bask in the glorious 2-stroke howl all day long. Mmmm....

      i think the people that don't like the sound are people always short on sleep lol but i discovered the detroit when searching to find out what engine the green goblin truck from the maximum overdrive movie was using and i think these are pretty sick, alot of people say the goblin uses an 8v71 but the 8v92 sounds more accurate to it

    The sound of that engine and I get teary eyed. In the 1980's I worked for Pacific Coca Cola. Their transport trucks were GMC Generals equipped with 8V92ttae's with 13spd road rangers. Wow what memories. I'm retired now for the last twelve years. After a career that span 44 yrs. Yet I still miss it. I still carry a current CDL-class A. It runs out in 6 yrs. will I get another maybe? Thanks for posting that wonderful sound. I attend truck show now and then. I guess its true old truckers never really retire or die we just fade away

    1968 in South Korea, my job was recovery on an M-578 retriever. The engine was an 8V71T and I sat right next to this teeth jarring behemoth of power. I loved every second in the drivers seat. I am a short skinny guy, and having that much power at my right foot, made me feel like I could look down on Andre the Giant. I could have chosen to just stay in the motor pool and be a regular line mechanic, but, the excitement of being in the field where the real action was, is what real memories are made of.

    This brings back memories. Not the Screaming Detroit, but the shotgun view. My dad had an 84 that he bought off his buddy in 85. Black with silver and maroon stripes, 42 inch sit down sleeper, 3406B Cat, and a 13 speed. I spent many weekends and the occasional week in the summer in that seat as a kid. Thank you for sparking those memories.❤

    • @cbarnett1790
      @cbarnett1790  2 года назад +2

      These older engines don't make torque like the modern day engines. They had to be revved higher, plus when this truck was made most of the speed limits were still 55 transitioning to 65. When spec'd they would run the engine at highway speeds at the peak efficiency RPM range. This particular engine was only rated at 357hp @ 1600 RPM so that also was factored in. I've installed a larger turbo and injectors and according to DDC literature I'm now in the 480hp family. I do have an OD transmission and it was still climbing speed at 82 MPH, but being on springs and blocks it was kind of a squirrelly ride so I got out of it. Lol

    • @TIJoe-te9qu
      @TIJoe-te9qu Год назад +2

      The Detroit of that time really didn't rev that high, but had twice the power strokes, so they sound frantic. I learned on a silver 92 and its rated max was at 2150 or so. Then I got a cummins 855, and was taught to shift it at 2150 also. Same speed, but way different sound.
      Now a Detroit 53 series...those sound like scrappy race car engines.

      Shoot me a serious offer and we’ll consider: Last 12 months we’ve replaced: injectors and turbo, mufflers, 10 new tires (8 caps) new air compressor and air dryer assembly, drivers door latch, LH headlight assembly, electric cooling fans, alternator (105 amp) and RH windshield. I run the truck 500 miles daily

      Oil leaker with zero tourque too loud and plain outdated. You need a 4 stroke period.

      The trucking industry has become too serious and stressful. I agree that the inline engines have more tq but that’s ok. I can keep up with most any truck once I’ve got the revs up. I have this 2 stroke for a reason, because it’s simple and easy to work on. I choose NOT to have a 4 stroke. I have this to have fun with on a nearly daily basis. If I needed money I wouldn’t be driving a piece of history that gets 5 MPG! Even with current fuel prices I choose fun over owning a DEF using EGR cooler killing DPF problem child throw-away shit quality truck. Oh, and my truck doesn’t leak oil because I keep on top of it.

    Yup, they were loud. Yup, they used oil like nobody's business. Yup, they got diddly for fuel mileage. But dang if they weren't a fun piece, and by God, they could pull.
